Uncle Jack on Brian Kelly's job and state of ND football

Kelly is one of the top coaches in the country who made a bad mistake with hiring BVG . People learn from bad mistakes and Kelly will be much more careful in the future especially with defensive hirers where he is not involved in as much as offense . Nick Saban had plenty of mediocre seasons before becoming a great coach . Urban Meyer is the exception but too querky as is Harbough for ND
keep Kelly help him become better rather than making risky hiring moves
Let's

He's no where near being one of the top coaches in the country.

He's a vulgar stooge....and a blockhead..

Somewhat makes sense. Firing Kelly at this point will lead to rebuilding again. Meh...

And the elephant in the room.....who would we get that is better??? REALISTACALLY,
not pie-in-the-sky, wishing upon a star candidates. Why in the world ANYONE thinks Gruden would be a better fit at ND than Kelly is amazing to me. Never been a college head coach, let alone at a place like UND. Cowher??? The guy is retired. Meyer, Saban?? Give it up, they're not coming. Throwing out the names of great football coaches in history is just that. It means nothing to our situation.

Even Tom Herman, who I think is the real deal, would need time to build a program at Notre Dame. Only nobody is willing to give a coach the time. Win now or you're a loser.
And has he coached in a pressure-cooker like UND? The places he's been have nowhere near the rigors/requirements that UND has. He's used to doing things a certain way. Would he be allowed to do those things at Notre Dame?? If not, would he still win games?? I doubt it. Then what? Fire him and move on to the next guy and the cycle continues.

Is Kelly the right guy? I don't know. But I'm tired of the idea of a coaching carousel.
Change for the sake of change is idiotic to me.

It's been 7 years. I'm tired of it too. Maybe it's time to change the way the search is done for the next head coach. Where have all the years of experience got us with our coaches. Davie, Willingham, Charlie, Kelly. Turn the ****er over to Sanford or another younger head coach and surround him with proven coordinators. Problem is, ND probably isn't willing to pay coordinators to get them here.

Sticking with a loser, just cause the next guy might not cut it, makes terrible sense.

See, this is the problem with people who want change for change's sake. Sanford has no HC experience. I guess Faust, Davie, and Weis were not enough to show that people cannot learn on the job at ND.
It does not make terrible sense to stick with a guy who has brought you to the NC game and won ten games last year. We can do a whole lot worse than Kelly. And we have past results to prove it.

I also think of Nebraska firing Frank Solich and Maryland canning Ralph Friedgen because they thought they could get someone better. They wound up with coaches who were worse. Anyone who suggests we promote an assistant with no prior head coaching experience not only has no knowledge of ND history, but also fails to comprehend the nature of being HC at ND. Period!

Davie and Weis had no head coaching experience prior to their stint at ND. In fact, other than Rockne, all of the ND head coaches who lacked prior head coaching experience failed at ND. ND is not the place for on-the-job training.

If the Administration cares about winning, it will be proven by letting Kelly go. If they are happy and content with the status quo, nothing will change. Ever. There has to be pressure placed on The Admin. to make the necessary changes to ensure success on The field. Just like when Lou was brought in. And Bob Davie fired. The season after he signed a 5 year extension. When The PTB decide there will be a change, there will be. And Swarbrick has nothing to do with those decisions. Except to pass on mandates and toe The Company line. Time will tell us all. Stay tuned.

I see that all those years experience that Willingham and Kelly had are doing us wonders.

Frank Solich was fired mostly because of off the field stuff. Luckily for him the internets was such a big deal in those days or more people would know about why he was fired.

It's not change for change's sake. It's for the betterment on the ND football program. It's a damn football coaching job. This isn't neurosurgery. The guy just doesn't have it and is gonna drag the program straight back to 2007. It's rolling downhill. There is no way this team should be losing to Duke or Texas. There is entirely too much talent to not realize this is a coaching problem.

Stop acting like ND is some other worldly job. It's high profile and it comes with some restrictions on who you can recruit. ND has proven it can still get top notch recruits. Shaw is winning big games up at Stanford and they are even more picky that ND. It's a coaching problem plain and simple. But give him 7 more years I'm sure he'll get it turned around.

Another apologist.

Ridiculous.

#1 I never once said he will be fired. I love how you make shit up as you go along.
I've said repeatedly he should be fired yesterday.
Now how in the **** do you get me saying he will get fired out of that?

Moreover...with your little boo hoo we could do far worse with a head coach...well no shit Einstein.
We also could do far better. Sitting still with the current coach brings us some decent seasons but ZERO BIG BOWL wins. None.

When was the last time we went into a hostile environment and won? Pretty much never.
Oh that's right...we got close many times so that's OK.

Apparently you are OK with average. I'm just expecting a little better.

I can name four championship ND head coaches who had prior head coaching experience. Other than Rockne (who was hired almost a century ago), please name one ND coach with no prior head coaching experience who won a NC at ND.

Care to fill me in on why Solich was fired? I know someone who played for him, and he never mentioned anything scandalous to me.

So he's putting us in a position to root against our beloved team then.

This sucks.

I hope he's already made a decision based on Kelly's ignorant decision to allow HIS FRIEND..BVG..to keep right on ruining a defense and it's players.
He made the decision last year when he signed him to a big extension for big money.

I knew a few who played there too. Mostly guys who didn't cut the mustard and only played a year or two and crapped out. I was told he liked to drink a little much and about a sexual relationship with someone too close to the program. Maybe just rumor, but they were there when frank was at the helm.

Hmm, didn't know that. That's interesting. Thanks for the info.

I'll tell you why solich got whacked.

He averaged 10 wins per season but the huge problem was who he followed. You never want to be that first guy to follow the legend. Bear Bryant, how did Bill curry work ?
Tom Osborne..Frank solich proved 10 wins weren't enough

Most times the first guy following the legend can never measure up. Talk about unreal expectations but such is life.

If I had to come in after a legend I want to be the second or third guy. Not the first. It's basically win it all or nothing.

Ray Perkins succeeded Bear Bryant, not Bill Curry.

I'd like to hear what your guy says. Maybe it's crap, cause there was also a rumor about knocking up a cheerleader. He did get caught passed out behind the wheel while at Ohio.

You know, that episode at Ohio sounds vaguely familiar now that you mention it.

Resident Idiot chimes in! Guess its break time at Taco Bell.

We only have one?

If that's the case, I'm not sure he gets the nod. We have a lot of candidates here, and I don't see the separation here to declare a clear winner.

Define this please. Because the subject being Kelly.... Kelly has nothing to do with studies etc.

Any administration decision reflects on the entire University, not just an individual or a team. There is no separation in these decisions.

The thread subject is not limited to Kelly only.

Oh please....

So by this thinking then it's one for all and all for one.

The next professor they hire it will have been made certain they are a positive influence to the football program...right?

I'm still laughing.

Brian Kelly is a football issue. Period. If they wish to retain or fire it matters good or bad to football and only football. Not law, business, science, etc.

If they believe it matters beyond football then obviously there is a fantasy land priority problem in south bend.

I echo again...they could lower standards and allow jucos to enroll and guess what...the ****ing dome will be just as sheen as yesterday.

To you and the powers that be, get off the elitest high horse.

88, I agree with you on allowing Jucos. There are many people that did not study hard in high school (or did not have enough money)but got serious about schoolwork at a JUCO and transferred to a university and did well and got their Bachelors degree. Notre Dame could except JUCOS who get high grades. It would help the students and help the football program. A win, win ! Jucos who do well there would probably have an easier time then many football players who did enough in high school but did not have the study habits to succeed at Notre Dame(like Greg Bryant --RIP).

Again, you have zero understanding of what ND is all about. It's an academic institution, not an athletic institution. No, academic standards should not be lowered. You really should find another school to root for.

You do realize that most the football team would not have been accepted with just their academic resume, correct?

somebody posted on irishenvy last night that they heard from a booster that was told that coach Kelly's camp has contacted LSU about the head coaching job there. I say his booster friend had to be feeding him false info because I just don't see Kelly running out on these kids when things get rough unless he thinks jack is firing him at the end of the year

You do realize that the athletes who play at ND are still, on average, much more highly qualified than those at a lot of other schools, correct?

I do know that they hold recruits to a higher standard than most schools. But don't act like most of these young men are getting in without their athletic ability. Therefore, this academic institution does lower academic standards for athletics.

No one said otherwise. But answer this: why would anyone be a fan of a school which is "elitist" and "needs to get off its high horse"?

That would be some real luck of the Irish there.

" It's an academic institution, not an athletic institution. No, academic standards should not be lowered"

I was just pointing out that they do already lower standards for athletics.

You are just arguing for argument's sake.

Yes, there are considerations made to athletes, but FYI, there are also considerations ("lower standards") given to regular students as well. There is a small portion of students, who have academic histories that may be below the acceptable profile, but are accepted because of their unique talents and or personal stories. Every school has this. For an athlete, it is there unique abilities in sport, for someone else it might be their personal story. Whatever...this accommodation exists. The question or evaluation process has always been, how far under the typical profile of admittance do you dip to accommodate an athlete.

All you do is lie and twist bullshit to your narrative. You mightily avoid any legit questions ..quite possibly because you've no answer for it other than to say
ND good, everyone else bad. Brian Kelly will help the science class, etc. Wtfe

Question

Are you saying you became a fan only after they raised their standards?
