I for one am cautiously optimistic that he will surprise us all and be an amazing head coach. But all of you complaining about him taking over, saying he's in over his head, no experience, etc. I want to say this to you.

Everyone has to get their start some place. I can't tell you how many times in my career that I've interviewed for positions that I needed and wished there was a way to get a person that was under qualified on paper into that position. A person that was more than able to do the job and do it well, yet an institutional piece of paper was the only thing that prevented me from hiring said person. How many diamonds in the ruff miss out on being able to flourish and do great things because someone doesn't like their resume?

Now, I'm not saying Coach Freeman isn't qualified. I feel his track record this season at ND, his undeniable energy and the fact that the players seem to be willing to run through a wall for him is plenty good enough to give him this shot. What ND has been missing with Kelly and desperately needs is intensity and energy. I know i grew tired of the business like, sleep walk through games, mentality that Kelly brought. I say this even though Kelly was very successful here. It was the thing that I always felt would have propelled some of these teams to the top or at least make those big games interesting. I always said I don't mind losing to an Alabama, OSU, Clemson so long as they went down swinging.

The video of him being introduced in the locker room put tears in my eyes. You can tell very easily the players love him and you could feel the energy building.

So to everyone bitching that we didn't hire some big named coach... sit back, have a beer and relax. Lets get behind Coach Freeman and see where he takes this program. I think and hope, we will be pleasantly surprised.

Congrats Coach Freeman... Go Irish.

As Coach Holtz said, if a dog is gonna bite it will bite as a pup... something along those lines. Freeman will have a chance to take a big bite early with our bowl/playoff game then against OSU.

Day 1 Freeman is already a better recruiter than that lazy im the closer former coach
Day 1 Can Freeman win a big game? Cant be any worse than our deer in headlights former coach
Day 1 player development? With the core staff in place at worse a push than our cheesy buzz word talking traits & grit Ive been coaching 20 odd yrs former coach.
Day 1 the fanbase doesnt have to be embarrassed or worried that our coach is a world class dork/douche bag like our fake accent talking former coach.
Day 1 Scheme, how many games when matched against a better opp. did you come away saying wow thank god we have Kelly he really outcoached that team...maybe a handful. Conversely how many times (even when we won) did we come away from that game thinking we got outcoach...more than we care to remember.

Who's doubting him, exactly? One or two guys? Most of ND fan nation is utterly ecstatic about this hire and I would say rightfully so. I think it's an awesome hire!

It's a risk, at least if you are concerned about things like relative youth, lack of HC experience, lack of a track record, etc. Whatever the criteria that makes hiring first-time coaches to top jobs be considered such a gamble.

But serendipity has put Marcuse Freeman's in ND's way, and if there were ever someone where you throw away the script and take it on instinct.... this is probably one of those times. He's a superstar in the making, or so we all hope.

It's a great hire....

There are doubters, already. Doesn’t the new guy get a honeymoon period?

doubters gonna doubt....I will say....my doubts about Kelly came after the first Bama Barbeque. I waited after that to see if he could beat a top 5 opponent.....never happened.

When I saw the clip it reminded me of an Ara story told by Terry Hanratty. Ara walked into the locker room and the team gathered around him. He began walking back and forth while pounding that program harder and harder into his hand. He did this for about 10 minutes and suddenly pointed toward the door and screamed, "Let's Go!" He said the team was so jacked they nearly tore the door off it's hinges. I get the impression Coach Freeman carries that type respect. I get the impression his teams will never lack intensity when they enter a stadium.

Thats true....ND did lay down.....but that is on the head coach. And after the first time....it wasn't corrected. It was a pattern...all on the head coach.

Do you mean the game without Trevor Lawrence that they squeaked by, or the ACC championship game?
47-40 thriller at ND....(was a win, as I acknowledged) then got smoked in the ACC title game with TL and co. The conference title game was the big stage....and BK arrived with script in hand.

I had doubts about Kelly starting with the first game against Michigan when, with his starting QB out with a head injury, he sends Tommy Rees out there to run a slow-developing flea flicker that Michigan intercepts, leading to a TD. Up to that point the D had been playing well. So why not be conservative and get the team safely into halftime where you can reassess things? To Kelly's credit, he began to learn from those types of blunders after his first season (which included getting suckered by Michigan State's fake field goal and calling for Rees to pass into the end zone against Tulsa.) and began to only take calculated risks. He actually got quite conservative over time, except for his willingness to go for it on fourth down a lot.

As to Freeman, you can't help but like the guy, but if you don't have doubts, you're just letting yourself get carried away by the current of early enthusiasm following his hire. Even if he is wildly successful in this postseason and into next year, I'd say reserving judgment for a year or two would be the wisest course of action.

And no, Savvy, I'm neither a toxic Kelly-hater nor a toxic Freeman-hater spewing my negative agenda, etc...

I have my doubts about Freeman; he's never been a head coach, and has been at ND for less than 1 full season. He was not my first choice. However, the decision was made under very difficult circumstances with horrible timing. That part is past. I am optimistic about retaining the core of this coaching staff and so far, we don't see a mass exodus of recruits....so holding this class together is critical and I am optimistic about that as well. Beyond that....I want this team to make a statement in the bowl game, whatever it happens to be. Win or lose....take off the gloves and leave it all on the field.

Absolutely.

The one where Clemson was ranked #1. Not defending Kelly by any stretch of the imagination but fair is fair.
Fair is fair brother I agree

Hope things are going well for you
Europe was insane post covid....glad to be back in Nebraska

Glad all is well with you. Got tested again yesterday for about the tenth time. Negative again. Fully vaxxed though.

Number 1 issue that will clear up all the issues about Freeman's abilities as head coach, and the fate of ND
football going forward: Can the guy recruit a top level, dominant QB??????

I think this single factor will separate MF from BK significantly, if he can pull it off. I do think the portal should be looked at; our QB stable lacks consistent game experience. Not necessarily saying a transfer needs to start...but if Buckner gets in trouble, or gets dinged on a run play....experience may be needed for a game or games. There are very serviceable quarterbacks in the portal...insurance is a valuable commodity. Recruiting quarterbacks should be a constant pursuit.
