Time to join the ACC?

The ACC is worthless. Clem may go undefeated and still not make the playoff. When does ND's deal end?

An undefeated Clemson would make the playoffs in every imagninable scenario. Even is every other Conference had undefeated champions, Clemson would get in. The Big 12 would get left out.

I am not sure if you are allowed to play 13 games in the "regular" season. Does anybody know the answer?

Lets play at Hawaii every year then - either start or end of season - good for both programs.

It would just be a 13th game then. It would not add much to our SOS. If ND were truly concerned with our SOS, we would stop playing the Shamrock Series games and add a tougher opponent. With the exception of Arizona St., our Shamrock Series foes have been pretty weak.

All powerful OSU played Hawaii and slipped by a couple of cupcakes -- it hasn't hurt their strength of schedule...

Considering that the first playoff rankings haven't come out yet, we don't know that.

ACC conference or independent ND still ND to win there remaining games. Losing to Clemson was not embarrassing at all but if they do go to Palo Alto at 10-1 I would be very disappointed . Stanford may prove to be the greatest challenge of all but the idea of being 10-1 with the chance to get a playoff spot makes THAT game a playoff game for both teams. IF ND deserves to be in the FINAL 4 they have to earn it. Beat the crap out of Navy , SC, Temple, Pitt. Make is hard for the committee to overlook ND. Every game now is a playoff .

If they do not go to Stanford at 10-1 is what I meant to write.

I just have a hard time believing this playoff committee is going to leave a 11-1 ND team out of the playoffs. The semifinal bowls are going to want ND in there. TV is also going to want ND in there. Just win baby!

Bowls don't have a vote and TV doesn't have a vote. The people who do have a vote have shown that all else equal, a team that has won a conference/conference championship will get the nod over a team that doesn't win it's conf championship game.

Based on one whole playoff your reasoning is flawless. Moron.

It worked for them that one time. tOSU over Baylor/TCU. tOSU won it all. If it's not broke, they won't "fix" it. Let's say FSU wins out their regular season and ND wins out their's. Both are 11-1. ND just beat Stanford and FSU just beat UF. Hard to choose which deserves to go to playoffs at this point. One week and 1 game later, FSU adds an ACC championship by beating Pitt/Duke/UNC. Now FSU is 12-1. ND 11-1. Pretty easy to pick the deserving team now, FSU.

NO. Don't make a bad long term decision. Wait for the playoff to expand to eight. It will eventually. I know the contract is only in year 2 of 12, but contracts can be re-done.

Do you honestly believe that the committee - with a ton of P5 members/influence - will ever select N.D. over any P5 conference champion regardless of the number of losses and give N.D. the opportunity to pocket the massive amount of money that the other playoff teams last year had to share with conference members ? Really ? It will never happen. I believe some of you are in for a huge letdown if N.D. does finish with just the one loss. It's called ARROGANCE and I believe N.D. - if it wins out - will experience the backlash against it.

Yeah, it would happen. Otherwise the public would recognize that a 12-0 or potentially 11-1 ND team being left out would make the playoffs a sham.

Check any other fan web site and no one includes N.D. as a playoff possibility. The discussion is about the conference champions and which one will be left out. Even if by some possibility you do squeeze into the final four before the last weekend of the conference championship games, I foresee you being bumped out by true (on the field) conference champions. Just ask Big 12 co-champs (and no title game) TCU and Baylor. The inability of that conference to name their one champion had just as much to do with OSU's selection as the Buckeye's 59-0 thumping of Wisconsin. He!!, their commissioner wouldn't come out and declare a champion but yet they screamed when the committee wouldn't make the separation.

A Sham ? Almost every college football fan I know/talk to that isn't a die hard N.D. fan would love to see N.D. taken down a notch or two and this just might be the year it happens. A sham ? Maybe, but brought on by your own greed and arrogance. Do you really think you're so special that you don't have to play by the same rules and format that everyone else plays by ? Do you think the committee will vote the only major/power independent in knowing that their schools have to share money with conference members ? Nobody likes greedy and arrogant people !

Does each conference and each team play by the same rules as any other conference and team? How about the Big Ten share their profits from the TV deal with every other FBS conference? Or do they not want to do that because they are arrogant and greedy?

Fans of conference teams who talk about the "arrogance" and "greed" of Notre Dame are idiots, because they ignore the same arrogance and greed that permeates their own teams and their own conferences. You seem to be one of those idiots.

Fans who post on websites do not select the teams for the playoffs. Their opinions are meaningless. Your suggesting that fans "would like to see ND taken down a notch" is similarly meaningless. Fans want to see the best teams play.

Your further BS argument that ND "thinks it is so special" shows your personal contempt for ND. Just remember---ND has been an independent since 1887. ND has remained an independent from that time until this. ND didn't change. Other schools did. Rutgers was an independent, too, not that long ago. Rutgers couldn't make it on its own.
ND "greedy and arrogant"? ND would make more money in the Big 10. ND wants no part of that group.

So by your statement, the 97 to 98% of fans that follow conference member teams are idiots ? You joined the ACC in other sports but not in football. Why ? So when the committee gets together they should consider all the P5 members and N.D. - cause they're special, huh ? By your standard, you're one of those that's right and it's the rest of the vast, vast majority that's wrong. Take your post to ANY other CF board and watch the reaction. I dare you ! Am I the real idiot here ?

You are really talking out of both sides of your mouth, and you don't even realize it. If you were really concerned with the "arrogance and greed" of anyone, then you wouldn't be in favor of the P5 member conferences getting all the bids. If you eliminated the "arrogance and greed," you would want the best 4 teams in the playoffs, regardless of conference affiliation. You would want ND and other independents to have a chance. You would want teams from the MAC, Sunbelt, etc, to have a chance. By limiting the selections to the power 5, that itself speaks of arrogance and greed.
Ewing was right. You are stupid.

If those fans think that Notre Dame is arrogant and greedy but don't realize that their own teams and conferences are arrogant and greedy, then yes, they are idiots. Conferences exist, in many ways, to maximize the revenue of their member teams. Rutgers jumped ship from the Big East to the Big Ten to make more money - but you don't seem to care about their greed or arrogance. Probably because you're an idiot.

When the committee gets together, they should consider all FBS teams.

And yes - I am right on this issue. Notre Dame is no more arrogant or greedy than any other university out there. I, at least, acknowledge that ND want to make the best deal for itself. So do other teams and conferences. Everyone is looking out for their own best interest.

Finally, I don't see why I should care about what some fanboys on a general college football board have to say. I've generally found those people to be intellectually lazy, and overusers of the word "haters".

And one more thing, Rutgers fan. Why do you think that every Notre Dame game, home and away, is nationally televised? Why do you think that Gameday is showing up in Philadelphia for Saturday's ND/Temple game? Why do you think that ND/Temple is going to be televised nationally in prime time Saturday night. Greed and arrogance? Or people wanting to see ND play?

R1950 et. al.: ND is irrelevant but I am pizzed that they are the darling of CFB and obsess to the point they are the most relevant team in my mind.

If ND is 11-1 vs any other team that is 12-1 or 11-1, your damn right they are going to take ND. I just hope we get to see if it comes true. Don't you know ND is going to bring in more money then any other school. Well there be backlash, damn straight. Call it arrogance if you want, but it has been proven before, ND brings big bucks for both TV and the NCAA. FOX or ESPN or whoever carries the playoffs will be falling all over themselves to get a 11-1 ND team. Just watch.

Amen! Temple gets a shot at a primetime Sat night game on ABC with ESPN Gameday there. Why is that? Because Temple is a juggernaut program? Hell frickin no! It's all ND baby. Call me arrogant all you want, fact is that ND puts asses in the seats and eyes on the TV, love them or hate them. Just the facts.

When did it become a rule that you have to play in a conference? I must have missed that. I know the NCAA doesn't care if you play in a conference. Is there some other organization that does care?

And I should note, I got home early Tuesday night and caught most of the college football shows on the ESPN channels. Every single one of them is talking about ND as a potential playoff participant if we run the table to go 11-1.
