  1. That was a solid, professional effort. A grab your lunch box win. This is obviously Kelly's most experienced football squad and it showed on Saturday. (Reminding me of the '77 team.)
  2. When two 5th years who can't start on your lineup end up STARTING on TOP TEN football teams, you know you are special. (Matt Hegarty for 7th ranked Oregon and Everette Golson for 10 ranked FSU.) By the way, you people wanting to disparage Golson need to get a life, the kid played a great game vs. a weak team yes, but damn, he has a rocket arm and can put the ball on the money, NFL style.
  3. Two areas where we couldn't have injuries (D-line and RB) well, we just checked those boxes. I think Brent needs to go to Kelly tell him he is all grown up, he's studying the playbook and can be that second or third guy. This is his chance, if he doesn't take it -- well, his fault and bye, bye. Wishing the best for Torean! He was my MVP preseason and if gone, will really be missed! Cage played very well in place of JJ.
  4. I WAS WRONG. I said Fuller wouldn't have the 2014 numbers without Golson's midrange rocket arm. Wrong, wrong, wrong. And happy to be so, Malik looks like the real deal! Always liked his leadership and running ability but he sure can throw it too. (After five years with disasters at QB, Crist's knee injuries, Golson's suspension, etc. Kelly really seems to have a stable of solid performers lined up and a coach in Sanford who will help them shine.)
  5. Bobbled catches: Chris Brown, Corey Robinson, Fuller -- saw a few of these. Question to former WRs out there or FB coaches. Does a left handed ball come out different? Is it hard to learn to catch a ball from a very different thrower. (Malik seems to have more touch.) Or was this first game nerves. (Not complaining, because in each case our guys made the catches! But we need to clean that up.
  6. Jaylon! Wow... And out D line. Very very impressive! Long season, stay healthy boys.
  7. Can we create a separate site for all the Kelly bashers. It is just so tiresome. Every time anything negative happens, these guys bring up what a bad coach he is, how he is an idiot, etc. It is just so damn tiresome. The guy is our coach and the best one we've had since Holtz. I understand questioning a call or a substitution but it goes beyond that. Tell you this, there are a lot of division one football programs who would love to have Kelly at the helm!
  8. 35!!!! Thinking about you my old friend. Hope you enjoyed the victory!

profoundly reminiscent of Michigan 2014--traditional power in a down year...does false hope spring eternal?

If there is one thing I have learned being a Notre Dame fan for the past 26 years, it's not to assume anything. This team looked good as advertised last night. Texas is not close to being a good team, but I would rather have a 35 point win against a traditional power than a 59 point win against New Mexico State or Southwestern Texas State. Next week should be a similar result and hopefully better, with the adjustments from week 1 to week 2.

Jefferson for Texas is their Jaylon Smith. Kid has superstar written all over him.

No false hope if watched Coach's presser he brought up Michigan game briefly. So they do not want to get too excited

Felt different to me. One, Texas had a chance to prepare for VDG's D, two, Gardner had three ints and Texas had no turnovers, Three, we only ran for 54 yards last year -- which was setting us up to be the one-dimensional team (it was all on Golson) that ran into trouble down the line.

I LOVED seeing our big, fast O-Line pushing the pile twenty yards down the field, that was special. Give 'em Hell Harry!

It is only one game, sure. But it just feels different.

nook, difference is that this team can score on anyone; it can run the ball on anyone and it can pass the ball on anyone! AND the guy in the booth knows what the hell he is doing!

i felt the same after the michigan win last year; and then felt even more reassured after we beat stanford--only to realize as the season played out that mich was as bad as they had been in the past half century and stanford was all smoke and mirrors. then injuries killed us and the wheels fell off the wagon.

i still think this is an 8-4 team. if we beat GT, i will be more optimistic. if we beat clemson, then we are a true juggernaut that no one will stop and will be heading for the college football playoffs.

The #1 area that SCARED me and was one of the fumbles was PUNT RETURN. Need to clean up the fair catch decision etc. Also Amir's poor decision to bring out the KO return. Was that actually a penalty for a "fake"? And of course the OL false starts. Hope we see ND hitting on all cylinders in charlottesville.....and no more injuries!

always going to have hiccups the first game.

Good post Don

I am unsure about Golson. Yes he had some nice throws but it was a Los déjà vu as I changed channels to see him have a pass knocked back

I think what will help him is Jimbo letting him roll out. Kelly kept him in the pocket. Wrong move, Golson needs no stinkin leashes

I thought last night was a good start against a very young team. I just hope that the Irish build on that.
I just don't care what happens with Golson. He's gone and that's all that matters.

Game one jitters are out. Even Schmidt had the butterflies . It's time to go to Virginia and play a great game . Round two. I think everyone is still cautiously optimistic but the last 4 games of the regular season are still fresh in my head. The offense has to be even better week to week because I do think they will se a more futile offense the rest of the way. Virginia is not a great offense but will be sky high vs ND at home.
