How do you explain Marshall and Stanford ?

Enormous underdogs at 20 and 18 points respectively.

Not just one huge upset, but two calamitous upsets. !

Both home games.

i can‘t come close to figuring it out !

Can anyone ?

Chalk it up to transition. new coaching staff. Players and coaches adjusting to each other.

That seems in conflict with ND’s opening game against OSU.

Those we’re two huge upsets by 20 and 18 point underdogs.

And don’t forget that staff coached against Oklahoma State

Reintroduction of game day Mass is a possiblity.🤔

Stanford was DP. Marshall was the OL. The D and ST beat Syracuse or that’s another loss.

Damn damn frustrating to think about. We should be 6-2 or even 7-1. I don’t care how bad DP was or the OL…..Notre Dame has to beat those teams at home.

We can chalk it up as a fist year HC dealing with growing pains, but next season….those losses absolutely can’t happen.

Brian Kelly amassing the longest winning streak in CFB against unranked competition was scoffed at by many here as not being noteworthy.

It was.

Certainly was. It put us in a position to win 10+ every year.

Did it correlate with winning a playoff game or a title? That’s the question.

The only 2 that coached the bowl game were Rees and Freeman, all the other coaches were replaced afterward.

I am relieved that we are not 7-1 and on track to slip into a post season thrashing.

I would say against Marshall we practiced plays that we thought we would need instead of plays designed to beat Marshall. That kept it close until the turnover bug hit. And they were holding like glue.

Stanford must have been just good enough to stop the run in the first half.

Well I guess the answer can be several reasons for the Marshall and Stanford losses. However, the main reason is poor QB paly. You could even make the argument that if the QB was a little better at Ohio state, They might have pulled that game out. I am not saying there weren't other issues. There clearly were. But if you look at those 2 losses against Marshall and Stanford, those games could have been wins if the QB's played better. Missing wide open receivers, throwing a Pick six and generally just no urgency .

Buchner was the QB against Marshal, Pyne came in and was 3 for 6

inaccurate and not noteworthy, it's called soft schedules. What's noteworthy is Saban, Meyer, Dabo, Smart, shit even Jimbo winning championships. No one will remember Kelly 50 years from now, but they'll still remember Rockne, Leahy, Ara, Devine, and Holtz.

What a tool. Go cheer for an atheist college you dope
So Irish beer, the first game I attended, in the late 90s, I was in the back of the church while the players were at Mass. I thought it was really cool they had that experience before games. The same when Freeman brought it back.
However, the 4 worse games ND has played this year have been at home against lousy opponents. It's a slight concern as of right now. There seems to be some routine going on at home that has the team not playing as well as on the road.
Hopefully, a win vs. Clemson will rid any concerns of this.
And I married a Catholic girl.

There are issues at home, but going to mass is not it. It was a dumb thing to pick out of all of the things. Freeman is a new coach and everything is different so adding mass to the schedule is not causing you to lose to Marshall. You cocky name calling shit mixed with your attitude towards mass makes a real schmuck

Audric's fumble certainly helped in the loss to Stanford. Yeah Pyne is/was terrible, but they still win ugly without the fumble.

anOSU: scoreless 2nd half
LSJU: scoreless 1st half
Marshall: 7 points in 3 quarters

It is not complicated.

Not so fast my friend !

Do you want a subdued football player or a do I want a gung ho football player going into a game.?

State of mind is a critical factor when you enter a competition, especially a physical competition.

Give me a hung ho football player every time.

We disagree !
you can argue with the mountains of data and studies that show unequivocally that meditation improves athletic performance and not a whisper of evidence to say it is a detriment. there are a thousand issues on gameday that could be causing them to have played poorly against marshall and stanford, including recruiting distractions, not getting the team up for poor competition, and you focus on 1 thing, going to church real quick. please.

I think it's actually absurd to think that going to mass is in any way related to our poor play at home. It's ludicrous
i think it's bc some people hate God and religion. The reason we have played poorly at home is bc this team prepares poorly, plays and executes poorly against poor competition. it's as simple as that. they play to their level of competition and its been an issue for years. this year its been magnified bc we are on the wrong end of the close calls.

Being subjected to a somber environment could have an adverse impact on playing performance.

going to mass isn’t a form of meditation

Does performing poorly have anything to do with pre-game preparation ?

WHY ?

It’s a forced activity that may be counter productive to on field performance!

Do I want to go to mass on Saturday right before a critical athletic competition ?

No, I don’t !

What makes you think that it enhances player performance ?

It 1000% does not hinder. If you’re spiritual, you might believe God will be with you during the game in some capacity. Many athletes, amateur and pro believe in God, and that helps them tremendously, even if it’s just mental. As a Christian, believe there’s more to it than the mental side, but either way, if you asked the players I can almost guarantee you they’d tell you prayer helps them and mass does not have one iota to do with their performance against trash competition. The reason we lost to Marshall is bc this program has a major issue getting up to play poor competition. They will show up this Saturday, wait and see. I’m done arguing this. This is one of the more absurd things I’ve argued about in my life.

How do you know ?

The answer is that you don’t know, that you’re just projecting your beliefs.

I was very close to numerous starting players, many of whom went on to play in the NFL and going to mass before a game wasn’t on their radar screen

Well, let's see, the ND team that won its last national championship went to pre-game mass.

This guy is off his rocker. Funny, the only 3 posters that took issue with mass are Savvy, Pat, and NIN. All openly liberal lunatics.
