It's good to see we finally have the athletes to fly around to the football. The play where Elijah Shumate recognized the quick out and flew to the football to make the stop was a thing a beauty. Going back to the CW and early BK days that kind of play would've gone for a first down.

Also, I wish Alize would've made that catch to boost his confidence for the season. Hopefully BK continues to try and feed him.

that play you're referencing w/ Shumate, I had a buddy say the same thing when it happened. He said thats the difference between ND now and 5-10 yrs ago.

From day 1 BK has recruited both sides of the ball. Now getting a good linebacker coach is another story.

Texas is slower in person than on TV. Texas will be lucky to get to six wins. Measure the Irish speed up against G Tech, Clemson, and USC. That will be the real test.

Its definitely way too early to have a good feel for where we are speed wise. However, one thing that was really evident in this game was how the defense swarmed to the ball. Even when the first guy missed, it was enough to slow down the ball carrier and allow company to show up to mop it up.

Again, this was a not very good Texas team we saw this weekend. As others have metioned, GT in a couple of weeks will tell us a lot more.

Yaah while you two old men wait on the park bench feeding pigeons the Fast Irishman like Jaylon Smith, K. Russell, Romeo Okwara, are going to be kicking ass!!

Your routine is growing old. Were you even at the game to judge the Texas speed in person or are you just going to insult your way thru every discussion? I'm still waiting for the TD punt return or two that you predicted against the Longhorns. Living as an eternal cheerleader does not work in Realville. Come join the rest of us.

Jack: pay no attn to the board's version of Bahgdad Bob!

Texas is, at this time, a very bad team. They have a few elite guys but Strong needs to recruit A-Z.
But, as obvious as Texas being bad, and generally lacking speed, so to was it obvious that ND has playmakers on offense.

Since ND's defense literally played a team without a QB, an OL that would have trouble being on the 2deep at most of the top teams, it is hard to get much valuable evaluation out of the game on Sat.

It will be a few weeks to get any real defensive feedback. UVA has similar problems as UT.

Texas has major problems on offense, but speed and athleticism aren't among them.

Dane Johnson, John Burt, Jonathan Gray, Armanti Foreman, and others all have top level speed, quickness, and athleticism

We got to see ND perform very well against those traits

Where Texas struggles (and really flat out sucks) is strength, cohesion, and understanding along the OL and any type of mental processing and polished passing skills at QB
These MASSIVE flaws sabotage an otherwise athletic offense

Oh wow IrishJack was at the game. I think you have told us that about twenty times. Good for you Irish Jack.. good for you..
Did you wear a blue and gold drool towel Oldman?

Not quite sure why some can dish out crap about others, but then when called out on the carpet crumble like a spoiled young kid. Irish Jack usually always has good stuff to say - no need to try and belittle him - man up - be an ND man and try and take the high road.

You will see a tremendous difference with the speed of Texas when compared to G Tech, USC, Clemson. I would not get all hung up on the greatness of this team after one game against an apparent 5 or 6 win team. The hard part is yet to come. Judging team speed on TV is impossible. You have to see it firsthand to appreciate it. I challenge you to point out the "twenty" times I have mentioned that I was at the game. Be cool and discuss these topics like an adult.

You are right IrishJack. I apologize to you.

I think IrishJack is one of the better posters on this site. He knows a lot about IrishFootball and has a lot of fire in him. He won't back down to anybody.
Again, my humble apologies. I will improve.

Bod you seem like a good man - I do like your positive outlook for all things ND. I just hope our fighten' Irish can stay healthy. I think we will have a great chance to win every game this year - we just need to stay healthy. We cant lose to many more starters like we lost Folston the other day. The young freshmen backs may be alright running the ball, but can they pick up blitz's on pass downs and be good blockers as well ? Against very good D's that weakness could be exposed.

Go Irish ! Beat the Cavs !

None of that matters if you don't have a QB. Texas's QB will be among the worst 1, 2 or 3 passers ND plays all season. I'm optimistic but need to see ND do it against a better QB before I say their defense is good.

admitting UT and UVA do not have proficient QB play is not a disparagement regarding the ND D!
The 1st good QB ND will face will be the GT QB. Who disagrees with that?

I agree, if you're talking about the quality of the defense

If you're simply talking about the speed of the defense, you can see that obviously, despite the lack of an opposing QB

Watching a DB run down a fast WR or an LB track an athletic RB is what it is.......if the defender has the speed and athleticism then he has it

It was obvious that ND has the speed and athleticism on the back 7 of the defense (we'll learn more about the DL as we move forward)

Bodi: everything's cool. Let's have some fun on this board. We can disagree and still have fun doing it. Right? We all want the same thing. Feel free to disagree anytime my friend.

Regardless of how fast Texas is, ND's team speed on defense has greatly improved the last few years, I dont think we'll look "slow" against any of the mentioned opponents.

Very true.

No denying that the overall team speed of the Irish is remarkable. The lads will be tested big time in the next month. It's hard to get a good read about this team because Texas is just plain bad. I never expected it.
