Did he play today? Not a flame, I know he didn’t record any catches. He might be next in the portal.

Merriweather went out early with an injury.

He dropped a pass, which has been an issue all year. Didn't see much of him after that.
This guy looked so good as a true Frosh I thought he was going to be our next TJ Jones. I don't know what the hell happened to his development in 2022. Possibly part of the Kelly-less effect. There's a reason head coaches make 8 figures. They have a big effect on the development of their players across the board.

Yeaaa BK was instrumental in the development of WRs.. tell us more on who BK developed at the position? Dude had a sophomore slump, maybe he doesn’t want to be at ND anymore, maybe he has the drops (that’s not a development issue). On the contrary, Jayden T and Colzie progressed as the season went on.

Our wr development under BK was average. Especially under Del. What are you talking about??

When the first play of the game that you practiced 100 times is to you and it’s a 2 yard pass and you drop it, you ain’t mentally ready

If he decides to move on I think that’s okay with me. Lot of young talent coming which will possibly pass him by.

Styles to me is probably the biggest offensive disappointment this year. Especially after showing tremendous flashes as a FR. I’m not sure what is going on in his head. Some of his drops were just baffling and he never looked explosive as he did his FR year.

Him being the biggest disappointment offensively says a lot considering how bad our offensive line play has been at times. I would even throw Logan Diggs in the mix, but he did pretty well the second half of the year.

I kind of agree that it wouldn’t be a big loss at this point. I actually like Thomas/Merryweather more. I also think Greathouse/James/Flores Jr will be pretty dang good coming in. I REALLY wish we hung onto CJ Williams last year. The WR group is going to get better

As a previous poster said, he looked like a promising player last year but had way too many drops this year to be worried about him transferring. There were rumors about him going to Ohio st. I don’t see him sniffing the field there but to each his own I guess.

I think he lost confidence …but it was obvious that Pyne didn’t see him a lot because he always went MM first; also TR admitted they didn’t get him enough targets in first half of season (seemed worse the last 6 games though)

Let’s see what the off season brings - he can be good from the slot on crossing routes, wheel routes, and deep posts

Sophomore Slump?
Hope so… losing Edwards we really need styles in the slot next two years….

No excuse for how bad he played this year

I’m sure staff is selling him on playing slot and not as much split tes out next year with no Mayer

Yeah. Kelly really got the most outta Boutte too. WR whisperer.

Styles loves Notre Dame and will have an excellent season next year.

*** The problem is--is that the Irish have so much elite talent that you got to make the plays when you get a chance.

The whole Irish Oline is elite. The tightends are elite ! The running backs are the best in the Nation ! And they will be even better next year !

Mickens is an elite corner !!! Jayden Thomas is an elite promising young talent !

What a pass rush the Irish had yesterday without that guy that set the sack records who sat out the game !

Colzie will figure it out !!! Last year they played JV teams !! It was too easy !
This year they played the Varsity ! Much tougher !

He was an elite cornerback in high school, they say great cornerbacks are wide receivers that can’t catch passes. Maybe he should move to cornerback

I know his brother is there, but if he thinks it will be difficult to get on the field here, there’s no chance he plays for Ohio State like mention.

Happens. Soph slump. He will be dominate next year. Competition. Much better WR room.
Doubt he’s going to be dominant next year—I have a hard time seeing him separate from the WRs we have right now

This is true—we had Styles and others open often but neither Buchner nor Pyne saw them since they locked down onto Mayer, but it’s hard to blame them because Mayer is so good even when he gets all the defensive attention. It was nice seeing five different players be targeted in the first couple of drives yesterday and I’m sure it wasn’t an accident.

We had an alpha #1 going to the NFL under BK during his entire tenure.

Mike Floyd, TJ Jones, Will Fuller, Chase Claypool, Davaris Daniels, EQ St Brown, Miles Boykin, among others im forgetting were all developed into nice NFL draft picks under Brian Kelly's watch. Not to mention all of the TEs. And only Mike Floyd was a 5-star/sure thing out of this group.

I thought Styles might be the next one after last season flashing some playmaking ability as a true Frosh. Then his development just came to a screeching halt out of the blue. This is to be expected though given the loss of Brian Kelly (regression to the player development). He was really good at maximizing the talent on the roster.

Anybody remember Kevin Stepherson? Too bad he couldn't get his head on straight because he was a really nice underrated gem who made big plays as a freshman and then could never get out of the doghouse and was eventually kicked from the team.

Floyd was a Weis guy.

So the others we had 1 every other year maybe go the league? Is that good?

Why did it take him 3 to 4 years to get something out of Boykin and Claypool?

Weis recruited Floyd (and TJ Jones) but Floyd played two years under BK and broke tons of records and developed into a top 10 pick. TJ Jones was a high 4-star prospect that eventually become a mid-round pick.

I think Kelly's track record with WRs was really good. We usually had a #1 WR/star player ready to take the mantel once one left for the NFL during the entirety of the BK era with a few lean years mixed in. Will Fuller's development from 3-star (when ND recruited him) to low 4-star (during final rankings update) to 1st round pick was pretty spectacular.

What's remarkable about this is that ND stopped recruiting high 4-star and 5-star prospects at WR under BK, but BK kept finding lesser ranked 4 star WRs and developing them into legitimate NFL prospects.

Still can't believe Boykin ran a 4.4 at the combine because he looked way slower than that while playing for ND

Kelly-less?

Thank god we're LESS Brian Kelly.

Brian Kelly loses that game yesterday.
Down 21-7 after 1....
Brian Kelly teams fold. FOLD

The WR part...

It's definitely a position we're challenged with.
Some of that ties to the QB.

Your a little too happy about 1wr drafted every couple years. Wrs getting drafted like crazy in the nfl.

I brought up in a post that players like Dexter Williams being in the turncoats doghouse. Stepherson was obviously the one of the other one's.

Chaseball, you are in my Doghouse because you didnt answer the three questions I had for you. Legitamate football questions.
I will not back you anymore for three weeks ! When posters call you a troll ! Three weeks ! The countdown started at midnight ! And will end at sundown on the 24th !!

It was solid until del Alexander came in...then it tanked.

The issue has always been how long it takes to get talent on the field. Under Kelly and now Rees. Using Merryweather as an example, they didn't teach him to run a post route at Notre Dame...why did it take until game 4 or 5 for him to come in and run a post route? He could have done that a few times a game all season.

If development under Kelly was just average, how did Kelly keep having 10 win seasons ?

Kelly is gone !

Kelly was a very good coach …… but he’s gone !

Get over it and stop blaming him for everything !

He and he alone turned ND’s football program into a top program, but he’s gone.

So far the new coach is 9-5.

If you’re going to complain, worry and bitch, do it all you want, but you ain’t changing history, so focus on an improving ND football team in 2023.

P.S. Kelly ain’t coming back. !

Yeah and he had a 4 and 8 season in year 7 and had 1 good season in his first 5

Yes he played,.. threw an excellent block on Diggs 75 yard TD, and ran the full 75 yards on the TD

Not sure many noticed, but Styles got Diggs that long TD. He was about to be caught and Lo took out both defenders without a penalty. Very heads up play. Watch the replay. Great heads up play.

Yeah, that was a nice play by Styles. I thought it was reminiscent of Kyren Williams' 91 yd TD vs. North Carolina. I was at that game and the stadium just went crazy, especially after the stiff arm Kyren gave to NC's All-American LB. What I didn't notice when I watched the play live, but became very apparent on the replay, was the impressive run Avery Davis made to screen off the last NC defender who might have caught Kyren. At about the 30 yard line Avery was to Kyren's right and about 5 yards behind him, and he just put his head down and kicked it into overdrive. He was flying. To be honest, until I saw that play I didn't realize Avery had that kind of speed.

Watch it again if you are interested:

Annoys me that we didn't get the ball in space to Davis more. I remember 3 big plays over 3 years. 2019 New Mexico, 2020 clemson, and 2021 purdue.

Well we will just not agree there, but that's OK. I see him down at the 2 but do agree, great effort.
