As an alum I was quite proud of the students who walked out. Exercising their right of respectful demonstration. Supporting their LBGTQ colleagues and their colleagues from undocumented families, and people studying at ND who are from Muslim countries and women. I watched it, some walked out, many applauded Pence, others stayed quiet. That is my ND, pretty conservative, with a spattering of progressives. Catholic in the best sense in that they show concern for the unfortunate and the forgotten -- on both sides of the political spectrum. If you think Stanford is going to be different you're in for a rude awakening.

Maybe Liberty University?

Cool story bro! ND will still thrive and have plenty of applicants who want to attend the prestigious university.

Who's against undocumented folks? Undocumented criminals now that's the real rub.

This is a shame. I have received 4 similar notes like the OP who say they are done with ND One who grew up in SB

I don't know. In this day and age assholes are everywhere. Some students led by former Student sores Bryan with a "y" Ricketts chose to do this crap. The action was likely the best course of showing their dislike and still not disrupting the proceedings. They pulled the same thing but worse in 2009 against President Obama

Here is the thing -- these young people ( and I realize their are some older people getting degrees). Predominately young people do not have the accomplishments, wisdom, judgement and respect that their professors and Administration does

Their school selected VP Pence for a reason. These nitwits think they know more than their profs and admins do about life and rudely chose dramatic exit on a man who is more accomplished than they can only hope to be as their last ND gesture.

This country is short on manners, respect and tolerance. They might have learned something

They chose not to. ND is wrong for how they handled it. These know it alls walk out on Presidents, VPs and would ND let them walk out on a professor whose class they were taking?

This is a sad state of affairs when this stuff happens to a school we love

I am torn on what if any allegiance I will continue to show to ND. Perhaps time will calm me down

The intolerance of the left and Dems is something to behold. The BS media and their 97 per cent anti Trump coverage according to Harvard shows how wrong and how far journalism has fallen

I expect the stark behavior of President Trump that has ruffled so many and caused them to react with such irrationality will be overshadowed by the man's accomplishments

Don't be surprised by anything. He may falter from the blather -- or transcend it -- and the Dems might be taken behind the woodshed in 2018 for their spiteful obstructionism

We shall see

ND did not have one of its better days today and that is on ND leadership, not a bunch of immature students who think their opinion has been forged thru legitimacy, experience and knowing what's best

Brother Stu, I think SouthernCalIrish is one of you guys pretending to be a Deplorable. I have earned my Deplorable wings and I have a good understanding of who is and isn't a Deplorable. I think he is "With her" if you know what I mean.;)

I have no clue what the OP really thinks, however, IMO regardless if were President Obama or VP Pence we should be respectful in these situations i am not an Obama supporter and did not like him. Students should not be rude.

REALLY!!! you would abandon your support for ND because of this incident? because a bunch of students stood up for what they believed...Even if I don't agree with what they are doing... I applaud them for making a stand...btw.. think you will be for a big shock about S....

I am a lifelong ND fan. I will be rooting for Stanford to to kick notre dames ass this year. Shame on nd. A catholic school??? I want nothing to do with nd any more. I hope you are proud

Go trojens!!!

Come on dude you can't be serious. I don't get people how be some can act like their life is over becuase someone doesn't agree with someone else. Who cares what these students did. Who gives a crap about trump, pence, hillary, dems, libs conservatives. All I want is ND to play well. I could care less if NF was a catholic universty. I like ND football becuase I like ND football period. However it's ok to have your opinion.

Look at the childish example adults in this country are setting for our younger generation. I didn't get what I wanted (Trump not being elected) so I'm going to continue to cry about it. I mean come on Universities had freakin play-doo rooms set up the day after Trump was elected so students could relieve stress because of it. If that doesn't scream this country is getting weaker and weaker by the second then what does?

We need to toughen up our younger generation so they are not so damn sensitive to everything when they don't get their way. I'm in the military and have been for 17 years. The troops we are getting these days come in with such a sense of entitlement like they are owed something and shouldn't have to do certain things. They also break out all the excuses in the book instead of owning up to things and taking responsibility.

I have two sons 6 and 4 you bet I'm doing my best to have them mentally tough for what this world can bring their way instead of teaching them to complain and cry whenever they don't get their way.

Good riddance.

I'm surprised by the number of babies on this board who complain about "snowflakes", yet who let the actions of about 100 students who silently walked out during a speech that clearly the babies did not even bother to read affect decades of rooting interest. If that bothers you so much, then I'm thrilled to see you go. The Notre Dame community is stronger without you.

Let's hope the young kids today don't look up to the president, or this behavior will become much worse.

the solution to these walkouts is simple; put an asterisk next to their name; nothing more. When inquiries are made regarding them, by future employers...let the asterisk be the 'voice'. That way the employer gets freedom of expression too!

I'm not saying I support everything that Trump does and says. But people in this country need to toughen up and not be so damn sensitive when things don't go their way. Life can be tough sometimes, deal with it.

I'm amused by the number of people who think that liberals are trying to suppress speech, yet who would happily employ methods that suppress speech.

1. free speech is NOT FREE! it came at heavy price; paid for by others!
2. aha, you want free speech and expression; but just for some; not others (you want to suppress their voice, so you can have the ONLY SAY). Guess what your idea of free is 'intolerance'.

Where have I advocated the suppression of speech? As I mentioned before, I chuckle at those who talk about how "intolerant" the left is, but want to punish students for exercising speech/expression yesterday.

aha, you twist the notion of free speech in a way typical of those who have no tolerance.
We are not so easily fooled. There is a difference between social freedoms in an organized society vs social anarchy.
In any agreement there is something lost and something gained in return. There is a segment in this country that consideres 'individual liberties' in a perverse way.

I'd love to know how I am "twisting" free speech, but you may be too busy crying about the fact that 100 college students are upsetting you.

Free speech is good. As an independent, with both liberal and conservative views, I will say that the sensitivity today is getting out of hand. The fact that universities are silencing conservative thought is an atrocity. I do not believe we should ever silence free speech. "Safe Zones" at liberal universities are harboring snowflakes from dialogue with conservative classmates. Professors are getting fired for conservative opinions. I fear a lot of history repeating itself and in 5 to 10 years you might be hiding your conservative views for fear of punishment. The younger generation is radicalized, silencing others, and gaining momentum. As a student of history, I'm frightened for conservatives and free speech. Enjoy Trump and Pence because America will look drastically different starting in 2020 or 2024.

When Obama spoke and students equally as rude then as now walked out . Was that ok or should have you got mad at these immature students then, Again Stanford students would have been in=mmature also. This is a problem with professors , students and media living in a bubble .

yep! their quest for anarch like individual liberties may end by false trust, false hope and a tyrant.

The same thing will happen to them as has happened to the younger generation for the past 100 years. It's called reality. Kids, houses, mortgages, bills, and all the rest of things that add up to economic and social reality in the US. A few of them will maintain their far left attitudes and ways of life, most will gravitate to somewhere in the middle, where most of the US finds itself. America will be fine.

That's not to minimize how troubling is the current wave of militant intolerant liberalism in American academia today. But most students will, down the line, outgrow that and form their own opinions from their own life experiences, and end up somewhere in the middle.

Doesn't the left preach tolerance and acceptance? Tolerance for illegal immigrants, LGBT, Muslims and many other minority groups. Why weren't they tolerant of the VP, why weren't they tolerant of the election but rather destroyed property and burned the flag?

Why aren't they tolerant of opposing views and tolerant of religion? Manny Pacquiao posted a video on twitter expressing how he thought homosexuality was wrong, he was banned from several public establishments in LA including the mall. Tolerance and acceptance? I think not. It's a one way street with the progressives. That's not freedom of speech, they are absolutely destroying freedom of speech.

There are countless of examples of teachers that have referred to LGBT students by a word they don't deem fitting and have taken administrative and legal action.. over speech.

So 100 students walk out of the ceremony and somehow it's a "they" meaning "the left"?

Being tolerant doesn't mean you have to sit and listen to someone speak. If a lesbian is giving a talk at your local town hall, and for some reason she offends you, you are more than welcome to leave. You have the option of "voting with your feet".
