Enough with the navy hangover talk. If ND cannot win two games in a row we might as well be Ivy league. socal is our main rival. They appear wounded. They embarrassed everyone on the team last year. The team has a bye week after.

I HATE socal. This should in fact be our BEST game to date in 2015.

BEAT socal!!!!! BAD!!!!!!!!!

I don't think they are wounded at all. If anything, they might be energized. They have speed to burn and incredible talent all over the place on offense. Just because Sark is gone doesn't mean the rest of the staff and players have checked out. ND does need to have a great showing and win this game if they have any ideas for the play-offs. You are 100% correct. No excuses.

What if we lose simply because they play better than we do on Saturday?

Yeah the worry about a post Navy hangover, whether legitimate or not has nothing to do with whether ND wins or by how much. The concern is that the cut blocks and the constant pounding the team takes in a game in which the ball is run so much has a negative effect on the team from a health standpoint. Additionally there are those that also have expressed concerns about the team shifting focus away from preparing for a triple-option attack.

if it is a well played game and great effort with the play on the field by the players that determine the outcome then no excuses are necessary! win or lose!

It's pretty amazing what ND is doing on offense with a 3rd string QB and RB.. both who had never started a game in college at these respective positions before the 2015 season.

ND came out of the Navy game pretty much injury free. They have a bye next week. Their bodies can rest then. The main concern is who in the Sam Hill is going to be the guy to get to Cody on a consistent basis? The game, IMHO, is all about that. The defense hasn't exactly set the world on fire sacking the QB so far this season. There will be no hang over Saturday night. Maybe Sunday morning after the win. UWash has set the blueprint and ND should take notice.

Cody is not a true Freshman unless I'm missing something in your comment. Also, didn't he throw for something like six TDs against ND last season? USC is very very good throwing the ball. Their WRs are very fast. Who is going to be the guy that harasses Cody all night? Can the Secondary play man on the WRs? It's not going to be that cold so weather should not be a factor. Our defense is going to have to be lights out all night for 4 Quarters and limit the big plays that they love to enable. BVG developing a solid game plan is one thing. Executing the plan on the field is something completely different.

What excuses could anybody make in year six? ....

Ara
this is a tough game!
A wounded opponent, that has as much physical talent as any in the country.
Then there is the impact to recruiting. An nice group of top prospects.

Irish Jack hit the nail on the head. Devising a defensive game plan is one thing and BVG will do that. Whether or not ND can execute the game is a totally different animal. At this point in the season, and after a year and a half, the defense needs to play instinctive football as part of the execution and not have to think about how to execute. BVG is a knowledgeable coach, but so far the ND defense has played well at times and at other times has looked very pedestrian. USC blew the Irish out last year. Hopefully, without the extensive injuries the Irish will come out on top. Right now I would take a one point win and walk away very happy.

Cody has looked bad when under pressure, and great when given time. Washington was all over his ass and he looked terrible, and ND needs to bring it. They can run the ball and look great at times with the old USC student body right, etc... I get the concern over our defensive backs, but think the difference will be whether we are able to get to Cody. Expect a close hard fought exciting game, and plan to enjoy with Brats and sauerkraut and beer.

We all hope our defense can get to the QB but who's going to do it? So far this season, no one really has taken that step.

^ so in your opinion no matter, any loss is on the players? You basically saying any game plan is like any other game plan and everything and any failing falls upon the players ? All coaches are of equal ability to devise a plan and to coach players?

BVG is creating a game plan that fits his personnel. And right now that game plan is developing for a defense that can't tackle, get to the QB, create turnovers, and gives up the big play, not to mention that there is still this nagging question about the Secondary's ability to cover. USC has NFL ability and speed at the skilled positions and a QB who shines in prime time. Does anyone think the Trojans are going to come strolling into the stadium and take this game lying down? Not me. I bet not the staff.

So BVG have given up on his and the other Defensive coaches' abilities to coach and is just game planning as though the D can't do anything right?

Did anyone watch last years game ?

Alot of the same guys on the opposing sideline.

Personally I wish Sark was going to be on their sideline Saturday night.

IMO we need to be able to run the ball and hit the QB if w're going to win.

No excuses - If ND , loses it is because of Brian Kelly's game plan and play calling -- players are simply pieces on a chess board

If we lose we need to fire Kelly and hire Boris Spasky so we can get to the business of winning a national championship

So Jack, you also seem to place the full burden on the players. You feel that coaching and teaching the fundamentals are not a significant influence on any of the failed results you mentioned.

If you guys are correct, this staff is wayyy over paid!

YES, as to the Trojan motivation Sat - effort wise - this will be their best game of the year!
"that's a fact Jack"

How did this thread morph into a coaching versus player execution argument? It's a team game, and team includes coaches and players. Coaching is game planning, making adjustments during games, developing players, teaching fundamentals, motivating players and recruiting the right talent. Players are expected to buy in and work their butts off and play to their abilities, execute to plan, and be fundamentally sound and mentally prepared. Some games are lost because the coaches are out coached or from poor game decisions (Utah), and some are lost because of poor execution by the players (Clemson). It's OK to lay the blame for a loss on the coaching one week and the players the next. Beyond individual games, the head coach is responsible for the collective record over multiple seasons, and should be judged accordingly.

It will be interesting to see how fast our D can get into a rhythm. Tre Madden is a horse and needs to be clobbered. If kessler gets time he'll be tough to stop. washington was able to rattle him and got a couple of ints. That's very unusual for kessler..... Their line has been weakened with Tuerk gone so there is zero reason for us to not be able to pressure kessler. Look for him to roll a lot. imo they will not keep him in the pocket very often. Hopefully, we can nail him with some decent open field shots. I'm hoping Russell can emerge and display some of that "NFL potential" talent.... right now that looks like smoke.... He's so due to breakout.... I'm guessing they will try to somehow get Schmidt into 1 on 1 coverage and exploit his lack of speed....

southern cal is ripe for a total beat down.... We need to deliver it....

"No battle plan ever survives first contact with the enemy." You'd do well to understand that.

kelly's offensive game plan versus clemson was horrendous for 3 quarters whether you like it or not. It sucked and put us in precarious position for a playoff spot. We no longer control our destiny and need huge help.

In the 4th quarter he finally did what poster's here pre-game said he should do and attacked underneath.

Instead for 3 quarters he stubbornly bulled Prosise into a human wall. We're lucky he's not injured....

We blew a massive opportunity to solidly be in the playoff picture.

That's especially true as we look at how our schedule is unfolding....

Right now we are out of the picture by a long shot.

All the kelly sunshine you pump on a daily basis isn't going to change that....

PS Did you notice I didn't mention kelly's special teams disaster/total blunder? Calling timeout really helped with the element of surprise and was a nice touch too......

No way ND should lose this game. "Win one for Sark" is great and all but football is still a lot about the X's & O's. Losing you HC in the middle of the season is going to have a huge impact on how they prepare for this game.

Pers , I don't know what to think. I have trust the defense is being taught how to tackle, create turnovers, take proper angles, and cover along with teaching the actual schemes. I also trust that the staff has the right players in the right positions. So, something is lost in translation when the game starts. I'm not at practice or in the staff meetings or in the position meetings so I rightly don't know who to point the finger at. Maybe everybody. Maybe the talent is playing to the best of their ability and that's that. I don't have answers to any of this. Only uneducated guesses. This I do know. This Irish defense will be tested big time this coming Saturday.

so in your mind all the dropped passes and turnovers barely contributed to the loss to Clemson. it was all on Kelly.

not sure what you mean? but till the worst happens, expect the best! keep in mind we are only fans and no matter what they will probably play again next year! unless the world ends!
