OK, I'm finally coming down off my drunken high from last night. lol. What a performance by our defense!

If I may, lets talk PSU. I have the not so distinct pleasure of living in State College and I work for the university. I guess I have quite a bit of insight on Penn State.

Offense:

The main guy they have to account for is their stud, first rounder of a tight end, Tyler Warren. He's big, tough and catches everything they throw at him. They use him in multiple roles and packages, and have quite a bit of success getting him in good matchups. He's a problem for our defense and we'll need to find ways to take him away. But he's going to get his catches and yards.

Keytron Allen, their RB, is solid. I would venture to say he's very similar to Love. Tough inside runner with speed on the edges.

Drew Allar, the QB. He very much impresses me. He's been around a while, has plenty of experience and spreads the ball around. This season he's done a good job of protecting the football and making good decisions. He is not a great runner and has had issues with pressure.

Their WR corp is pretty pedestrian. They do enough, but no one really stands out. If we can take away Tyler Warren, those guys will need to step up for them.

Defense:

They're solid across the board, but their front 4 is very good. They, like us, like to mix up pressure schemes. Abdul Carter... he's a stud DE. He'll be an issue to keep out of our backfield. They're secondary is an issue and has been all season. We need to find a passing game real quick to take advantage of this.

Coaching:

Well, lets just say that the natives in Happy Valley are restless and have been for quite some time with Franklin. He has struggled to win the big games (where does that sound familiar?). This staff I don't find as inept, they have fielded competitive teams for a while, but Ohio State and Michigan has had their number.

Overall:

PSU is a lot like Georgia I feel with the exception of having a QB that can throw the football well. They rely on their defense quite a bit and they've been good all year with exception of the Big Ten title game where they gave up a lot of points to Oregon. There is no quit in them, they play to the bell as we saw in that game, even though they came up short.

If Golden can figure out ways to shut down their TE and force them to other recievers, this will be another defensive slugfest as I don't think PSU's recievers are good enough to do a lot of damage against our secondary. I see no reason why we won't shut down their running game.

Offensively... well, we're going to have to play better than we did against Georgia and be able to throw the ball. They have a good pass rush, so I'd expect a lot of short passes and screens to try to slow them down and keep Leonard upright.

At this point, this is going to be very tough game since we'll be playing a team that is not handicapped by QB play like UGA was.

My initial thoughts... ND 31 PSU 28

Oh and one other note. I'm absolutely ecstatic to be playing Penn State for more reasons than one. Probably my greatest ND memory of all time was the Snow Bowl in 92. I was a kid and it was my first trip ever to South Bend for the game. Our seats were in the endzone right where it all went down in the blinding snow. Mirer to Brooks! I remember it was snowing so hard that PSU, in all white, you could not see them when they were at mid field.

Great post. Thanks for the context. To infuse some optimism, we did slightly better on the common opponents (USC and Purdue), they had a few more close calls, Big Game James is not a moniker you will hear, and the Carter kid is really banged up.

I think we will win but it will be close. Penn State is very solid. Our D will be the difference. Our plan to play conservative on O has worked so far, but we may need to score 30 to beat Ohio State or Texas.

I agree with everything you said except the Georgia QB part.
I think that Stockton kid played pretty well yesterday. He threw some really nice balls.
Didn’t seem too rattled til the end when we were teeing off on him. The o line especially the tackles let him down.
I think Penn st hangs for a while.
Jmo.

You're right. He did. I do believe I read somewhere that a big issue and probably his biggest detriment in the game was not being able to correctly call protections pre snap.

Drew Allar IMO is better than Gunner Stockton.

keytron is not like Love IMO. Keytron does have great vision, balance, runs hard and doesn't go down easy, but lacks top quickness or speed. He's more like ettiene we just went against.

Singleton has the home run speed, but goes down very easy. Singleton is similar to price IMO, love is a unicorn.

PSU Dline is undersized but shoots gaps hard, and their lbs fly downhill like ours. They secondary is not as strong in pass coverage, and can be had against in the air. We have more talented depth at LB than PSU but psu lbs are better in coverage.

We will have the ability to move the dline more so than we did with Georgia, but psu dline will be better at exploiting spindler/coogan and the fact they aren't very nimble on their feet.

I think ND just needs to run leonard earlier. Hopefully our pass game is improved.

Stopping penn state, i'm confident we'll slow their run game down, it will be our lbs/safeties covering their rbs and TEs.

Appreciate your post and insight. However, I will admit I'm surprised you think PSU will score 28. If ND shuts down the run, which I think they will and limit Warren's production, which I believe they can. I have a hard time seeing PSU scoring more than 17 at most. What do you think?

I think we'd beat PSU 2 out of 3. They are certainly capable of beating us, although I don't think they will. We are red hot right now.

PSU has looked pretty good in the playoff so far. So that's going to be a tough opponent. They remind me of ND as a team that is playing balls-out, hardcore football right now and is going to be tough to beat. Good running game, punishing defense. And a pretty good passing QB who's apparently a serious NFL prospect, even though he waddles around like an OL playing QB. So not too mobile.

Should be an awesome game.

see, i don't think we're red hot from an execution standpoint, and that's what is good. We beat a really good team without playing great because freeman and staff have this team playing so darn physical and tough.

We're going to need to clean up some things (penalties, blown coverages) and get our Offense going better to ensure we win next week. Can we win like we did vs georgia, of course, but you want to see this team keep improving.

I watched PSU a couple of times last year and was not impressed at all with Allar. I thought he was way overrated. Turning the page to this season I watched the SMU and Boise State games and Allar looked much improved from what I remember of his play last season, though that could have partly been a product of the defenses he was facing. I think if we can pressure him we can minimize his effectiveness, though he is a big kid and won't be easy to bring down. Warren is an excellent TE and he will be a tough match up for our secondary, though Shuler is a big guy and might be able to neutralize him somewhat. I see the game as a defensive battle.

Penn state is capable of scoring more than 17, especially if our LBs/safeties bust coverages. Also, i'm not a big allar fan but he will constantly try to make plays when needed with his legs or throwing tough passes. We have to get him uncomfortable from the get go, and again, win the turnover battle. Allar seems to get a big 3rd and long scramble or two a game. Need to prevent that.

They have looked good, but they played Boise and we played Georgia.
They also played SMU. And we also played IU. I'm not really sure the relevance of any of that. We know what PSU's all about. They also have old boy at TE who's kind of a difference maker, a special player for them. Definitely a pick 'em game I would think, which sounds awesome to me, this is what the playoff is all about. I feel like saying getting consistent, constant pressure on their heavy legged QB could be a key to victory.

Well, they played OSU tough earlier this year and played Oregon tough in the Conf championship game. This is going to be another dog fight.
I agree this will be a tough game. It's why I'm confident our offense MUST be better, and our D can't have busted coverages. Penn state isn't a great execution team, they try to confuse you and get you into mistakes.

Obvious though is always turnovers

Penn state hasn't played a team with elite physicality in 2 months (since ohio state). Oregon has athletes, but are soft.
If Oregon is soft, why did they navigate an entire Big 10 regular season undefeated, and then beat Penn State for the Big 10 title?

How do "soft" teams win a Big 10 title undefeated?

I think we're going to have a tough time running the ball against them, just as we did against georgia. I was surprised we ran the ball for 150 as it sure didn't seem that way.

One thing for sure, we have to do much better at TOP than we did against UGA. I was really concerned about that for a while in that game as we need to keep the defense fresh at all costs. I feel like that hour glass is eventually going to run out if we don't find ways to control the clock with the offense better than we did there. Even running time off and only getting three out of a drive is huge when our defense has been playing so well.

I will not be going out on a limb by saying PSU `s offensive line is better than Georgia`s, yet, ND constantly tormented Gunner who did not play a bad game at all.

Because they have absolutely elite skill, and a very good accurate QB. Ohio state came with a new level of physicality on both LOS vs oregon, and dominated them.

Maybe instead of soft i should have said, don't play an overly physical brand of football.

Yeah, our run game for the rbs will be much better if riley is a threat from the first series to run. We need to run him right away.

You didn't mention Singleton? He's a stud

And they have 2 dangerous wrs now. Wallace and now the young kid Evans. He's a deep threat

This will be a very physical game. Both teams have similar traits. The only question I have is , will ND have enough left in the tank ? Even though it’s an obvious big game , ND has to play similar to yesterday’s game. Hopefully they can equal that performance

Can we move the game to Green Bay so we can have this

PSU has had to play 1 extra game than ND having played and lost in the conference championship, so not having enough in the tank won't be an excuse for ND.

Do not misunderstand me. I am not saying that as an excuse. I am simply pointing out that they played a very physical and emotional game last night. One week from now it will be a similar setting. It is difficult to do that two weeks in a row knowing there is so much on the line. If the Game were 10 days out or more I think mental and physical recovery would be fine. I am hoping they can play as tough as they did yesterday. That’s all I am saying

Obviously it'd be nicer to have a couple extra days. I don't know why this is even a discussion. It is what it is.

Our game was much more physically and emotionally draining the. Their 2 games which they won pretty easy against interior teams. Plus the 2 days rest plus all our injuries

How much left on the tank is a legit concern
