If Mayer & Foskey left the team, why are they on the sideline?

Of all fan bases to question their players for opting out of a meaningless bowl game when they have a NFL future. Jaylon Smith wasn’t that long ago.

Pat, I wish the players would play the season through. What I don’t understand from Mayer. He’s sitting out the bowl game because of potential injury. Why risk injury all season once the Irish were eliminated from BCS?
i wonder how much of the decision was influenced by an agent

Pretty soon you’ll see players sitting out the last few games of a season, and when they do, they should be dropped by the team and the school.

They were given a scholarship for the entire season, and when they bail before the season is over, their relationship with the college should be terminated.

So a single freak accident should dictate policy for everyone.

What percentage of players suffer career ending injuries in post-season bowl games ?

Jaylon Smith is currently starting for the N.Y. Giants !

Once Irish lost on October 15th vs Stanford they were out. They were relegated to a meaningless bowl game. The extra practices are big for 80% of the team. Mayer was & still slated as a top te in the draft. Using Mayers logic , why did he risk injury playing the rest of the season? Are players more prone to injury in a bowl game instead of week 9?

I’m against expansion of BCS but CFB is gonna have to expand to keep marquee players interested in playing.

They didn't leave the team, they opted out of the game. Pyne left the team. See the difference
So they practiced leading up to game ?they left team for nfl pyne left for another team … both left the team, foskey and Mayer on better terms though

Sorry if this was posted already.

The AL players got together to discuss opting out. Evidently they came to terms and nobody dropped out. And the NFL bound players made an great impact in their bowl game.

NEW ORLEANS — Not long after the Alabama football team defeated Auburn in the annual Iron Bowl five weeks ago, the Crimson Tide's leadership group − a collection of players who serve as a source of influence and guidance at each position − got together.

It not only preserved the depth chart, it made every difference on the field as well. Alabama players either certain to or expected to be drafted in April accounted for five touchdown passes and 76 rushing yards on offense; and on defense, two interceptions, a sack and five tackles for loss. The players who decided to stay, in short, were the ones who delivered.

I still stand by my earlier comments regarding Mayer and Foskey. No reason to shun future recruiters and supporters of the ND brand. For good stories like the AL one, well, Notre Dame had Jaylon Smith.

It's nice if they play. But it's the new college football reality that many top NFL prospects won't for fear of rolling the dice with a devastating injury in a bowl game.

I think agents are playing a role in players opting out.

The 12 team expansion may help to retain players.

Time will tell.

How many teams make the CFB playoffs ?
How many teams win the NC ?

So once a high draft pick player determines that they won’t make it to the playoffs they should quit on their team ?

The day they quit should be their last day as a student and their last day on campus !
... on the school's dime anyway.

This is a good point: the specter of agents and business interests that thrive on lower end transactions.

Many will thrive on volatility, getting players to transfer in pursuit of the most $$$ to be paid...getting their cut of any transaction. The more transactions, the more their $$$.

High end transactions are fewer, as there are less positions at a few highly branded teams...albeit remains to be seen if teams can stay consistently elite and similarly branded given this insanity.

Brave new world that is just getting started.

Drew Pyne ruined his whole reputation. He was supposed to be a ND guy who would never transfer. He wont play more than a couple of series for his new team. Most coaches dont allow three fumbled snaps in a row and eight three and outs b4 he can get in a groove.
He didn't ruin his whole reputation. Give me an effin' break. He was already dismissed and treated with casual contempt by most ND fans anyway. Furthermore, he ended up being treated with much the same contempt by his own coaches. Which is their right, if they want a new QB and they think they can get one in the portal. But DP didn't do anything wrong, he didn't let anyone down. All he did was complete a fairly above-average season in all respects pretty much as ND's starting QB, and lead ND to a very respectable season when things could have gotten very grim. And this is the thanks he gets from ND's newbie HC.....

So I don't blame him at all for transferring. And if we don't end up getting SH, and so far it's radio silence on the ND homefront other than these rumors, then our coaches will have some pretty serious egg on their face. As far as damaged reputations go......

How many of the Georgia players who are slated to be drafted by the NFL opted out of the OSU game and are now opting out of the TCU game ?
