If Mayer & Foskey left the team, why are they on the sideline?

To be fair I think all things considered Freeman did a good job this year. To be able to come back from 0-2 after a loss to Marshall and still win 9 games against a tough schedule with mediocre QB play, I don't think Kelly could've done that.

Either way the running back situation was baffling all year.
Why ? You have a great running back room. Deland has done a fabulous job with it. Both Estime and Diggs have been very productive. They were again last night. 45 points not enough ?

Why is Bryce Young playing then - he’s going to be a top 3 pick if not 1

Fantastic recruiting that position!

Because he chose to. At the end of the day, it's their choice. I don't understand why people get so upset by these young folks decisions in these situations like they players owe them something.

And you've been wrong all year. Great complimentary tandem. It works.
I agree. Great tandem. And it works. And they should keep doing it.

The thing most people including myself can obviously see is Estime needs to get more of the carries than Diggs. Period

You can slobber over the coach and coaches all you want, Estime is the better back and should be getting the ball more

100% agree. Pretty obvious...and says something about Freeman and especially Tommy Rees.

The running game was still good enough, coupled with some big plays. But it clearly won't be against better opponents. Why not optimize to be an A+ running game rather than a B+ or A?

For me, as I posted earlier, I think Freeman needs to rethink Tommy's game planning and game day calling. By the end of 2 seasons, especially this one, I think Tommy is still learning on the job.

I'm still not qualified to say what should be done. Aside from a deep discussion on these things. I'm not saying fire Tommy. But Freeman is now in some risk with a young OC who has significant enough room for improvement.

I don't have a problem with them being there. However, some draftable players still played, like Patterson.

But it was almost a good thing not to have them. It forced Buchner to spread the ball around more, and on defense, it gave Bothelho a chance for more PT. He ended up with 2 sacks and had a nice game.

I get the financial decision to sit out, but this is what doesn't make sense to me. Mayer and Foskey knew after the Marshall game making the playoffs was not an option. So why did they play the other games? What's so different about playing against UNLV in the regular season and not playing USC in the bowl game? Did their draft stock dramatically go up because of the UNLV game? No. It's a free country and everyone can do what they want and don't owe us an explanation (maybe their coaches and teammates though). On a personal note, I would have been EMBARRASSED to be doing a sideline interview in ND gear during a bowl game with my brothers playing on the field. Especially since Jarrett Patterson played.

Love you losers playing fast and loose with other people's futures and money. Pure comedy gold. Did you stomp your feet and plug your ears with your fingers when you made this thread?
Nope.
I just observed the obvious dichotomy and posted about it.

Remember Jaylon Smith? Lost millions despite the insurance he had.
How do you know he lost millions when he has made millions? How do you know he doesn't get hurt in his first practice in the NFL and end up in the same situation.

Short story is... that he lost millions is all speculation since we don't have eyes on multi-verse timelines.

Sit in the stands then like a fan.
They’re not fans but former players. Are we now going to tell Bettis or Te’o to grab a spot on the bleachers? The fuq type of twilight zone are we in? Idk if it’s right or wrong that they didn’t play (I do know that there’s no way I could not play) but we’re talking first round picks and how stupid would we all feel had they played and got hurt? Jaylen Smith will always be a “what if?” situation for me.

Dude really? We’re talking signing bonus money and Smith was a top 5 lock. He lost millions and millions never mind what he made or didn’t after the draft. He lost millions in signing bonus $$.

Actually, they are different than most former players. They were paid to play in a game that they have chosen not to play in.

Bettis didn't choose to not play in a game and then choose to be on the sidelines in that game. He chose to exit school early and not get paid for a fourth year of playing. There's a big difference.

This thread is stupid. If Jerome Bettis or another great former player was on the sideline no one bats an eyelash. How about we treat yesterdays stars well, so that tomorrows stars want to come to ND. Personally I’m glad they were there.

I’m split on this issue but the one positive I’d point to is TB looking for someone not named Mayer.

Honestly, as good as Mayer is it was sickening watching so many forced balls to him with other guys running open this season. It was so frustrating at times that it was difficult to watch.

Totally against players opting out to prepare for the pros. Yeah, I know you can get hurt like Jaylon Smith did, but you can also get hurt in the middle of the season.

But that said, l see no value in not letting them on the sideline.

Perfectly fine with Diggs and Estime splitting carries. My issue is with running Tyree up the middle - those carries are wasted. He’s too small. He needs to accept a different role next year - either slot receiver or much reduced running back and special teams role. Frankly, I am ok if he transfers. Seems like a good guy but too small to be an up the middle running back - his speed is only a threat when he is in space.
A decent offensive line makes holes. Two-thirds of the time, it seems our line is just a ton of steaming manure, while the running back does all the work to make anything out of it. Tyree isn't big enough to do what Estime does. How many times does that guy pick up 3 or 4 yards just by refusing to go down while the linemen stand in his way?.

HH is an offensive line whisperer!

If, instead of playing South Carolina, ND was playing in the CFB playoffs, would you still feel the same way ?

There is NO difference, they all left and abandoned their teammates on the field !

The natural progression for abandoning your team on the field for post-season play will be the opting out of late regular season games.

The moment a player opts out of a game they should be dismissed from school.

Pack your bags and go on to your next life !

Drew Pyne ruined his whole reputation. He was supposed to be a ND guy who would never transfer. He wont play more than a couple of series for his new team. Most coaches dont allow three fumbled snaps in a row and eight three and outs b4 he can get in a groove.

Mayer and Foskey were captains. The pro scouts will see what Patterson and Bryce and that Linebacker for Alabama did and will take that into consideration when money is discussed.
If Mayer and Foskey become legends like Joe Montana I would not accept a autograph from them if they offered me a million dollars. My motto is money earned from hard work and GREAT investing. not from being a prima donna with great hair like Mayer !

Reality is he didn’t lose ANY money. His insurance paid out the difference between where he was projected to be picked and where he was actually picked. ESPN or somebody did a whole story on it years ago. People are just trying to change the facts to fit their narratives.

Or the delay of game issues.
Or the inability to throw accurately 30 yards down the field

Hey, is the Georgia Tight End Who won the Mackey Award as the best tight end in college football playing against Ohio State or did he opt out ?

And if he opted out will we see him at halftime ?

Wait, he is playing, I saw him catch a pass !

Why didn’t he opt out and abandon his team ?

Come on man. So you telling me that you think Mayer is going to drop in the draft because he sat out? If you feel this way, all you have to do is look at Jamar Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals who sat out a whole season and went 2 or 3 in the draft.

That's a two way street. How about showing some respect by opting not to be on the sideline of a game you have chosen to not play in? You have quit the team. Move on.

Here’s a question. Let’s say you’re a NFL top pick & your team has two quick losses. By week 6 your CFB team is out of BCS game. Sit out rest of way? I understand why Mayer sat out but why not do it sooner?

How many teams make the CFB playoffs ?
How many teams win the NC ?

So once a high draft pick player determines that they won’t make it to the playoffs they should quit on their team ?

The day they quit should be their last day as a student and their last day on campus !

Pat, I wish the players would play the season through. What I don’t understand from Mayer. He’s sitting out the bowl game because of potential injury. Why risk injury all season once the Irish were eliminated from BCS?
