I have to admit... our lack of recruits is surprising me

I think I wrote about this earlier in the season and said if we kept winning we should get a boost but it has been very small. I know there is a decent amount of time left, and some of the big recruits like waiting to announce at the all-star games or NSD, but I would feel better if we had at least 2 solid verbals from top players soon.

Also when I say top recruits I am talking about the 4 star kids who are in the top 10 at their given positions coming out of high school. Obviously having a 5 star is best and you know that player will be in the top 1-3 at their position so no need to think about it. Unfortunately we have not gotten a lot of 5 star recruits over the past few seasons and some of the ones we did land ended up leaving our program for one reason or another.

So as of now I like the fact we get another big offensive lineman who will make an immediate impact, ranked as the 3rd best at his position coming out of high school. I also like the fact we have scored some secondary recruits even if they aren't ranked in that top 10 because we need anything we can get back there. If one or two can play above their rankings then we will finally get some solid depth, especially if Crawford can come back strong from injury, in coverage.

Outside of secondary we need some pass rushers bad! I know we have a couple decent kids listed and again I hope they can play above their rankings but I would love to see us land Hayes and Betiku. These are two players that look ready to play and dominate a front seven. If Jaylon decides to stay, I think he leaves but let's hope he wants a final season, it could be something special.

Offense looks good but if Fuller goes pro that would be a huge loss, no other players right now have that type of ability to stretch defenses. I do think Aliz'e is special and I am surprised he doesn't get the ball more but maybe he is just not up to speed with the offense. So yeah getting an athlete on the outside would make a difference or if one of the young kids steps up that would be great as well, I will take both with Fuller coming back lol. Add the fact Kizer and Adams both come back with playing experience, Zaire will be back to push the starting position, Folston hopefully comes back strong after his injury, and most of the O-line comes back and we have great depth either way.. though losing Martin will be tough. Oh and it would be great to see CJ play along side Adams or Folston because he could be split out or running plays confusing the defenses.

Anyway let's hope for the best. I know academics are always an issue but Stanford is having an amazing recruiting season with time left, even Duke is doing really good. I would include North Carolina but since they make up classes to pass their athletes I have no respect for them. Each day I see them play or here about their program it pisses me off that there still hasn't been anything done by the NCAA which leads me to think it will be slap on the wrist for one of the worst academic scandals in college history. Sorry off topic but it just sucks to see cheating teams prosper.

Let's Go Irish!

Right now we have 2 less 4star commits than Bama and 1 less 5 star. Not bad considering academic req. Lets not talk about Ohst since we know they pay their commits. When highschool playoffs are over ND should get some more and some of the 3stars will get up to 4. Cold weather doesnt help.

Good post college fan. I think our guys are really pushing for a strong finish. With roughly 5-8 spots remaining, we have the potential to finish off the class with some impactful 4* recruits. Lets hope that some of them are front 7 players!

ND has moved up 10+ in the class rankings over the course of the season is still is in on a bunch of top players that will not be announcing until after the season. At 17 commits ND is going to be able to take 6-7 more how many spots do you want to fill now?

ND will take 8-9 more, depending on how many want to join.
2-3 more DBs. 1-2 DE. 1-2 LB. 1 RB. 1-2 WR. 1 Slot.

Studstill
Hamlin
Pride/Burton
McIntosh/Homer
McKinley/ Robertson
Alloway
Hayes
Betiku/Kemp
Ferns/Jones/ McCulloch/McCloud

I mentioned Stanford having a solid year with the same academic requirements, not Ohio st who recruit kids who can't read. I do agree with you about some kids being pushed to 4 stars and I think Kraemer will end up a 5 star, but as I mentioned I look at the position rankings more than the star system when it comes to the 4 star kids. Big difference between the number 4 ranked DE or DB and the 25th best player at the same position. When you start getting these top 10 kids over and over that is what makes teams so deep and strong. Actually if you want a good example look at our offensive line over the past several years... the one consistent position we have been getting top 10 kids and it shows. Agree as well in terms of weather because you are battling a smaller group of recruits, that are eligible for our program, with big schools like Michigan and Ohio st., both having big recruiting years and both will probably be top 5 with Ohio st. being 1st, freaking sucks!

Kemp already committed to Michigan... not sure about the others.

Definitely let's hope! We need some kids on the front 7 that can step in right away as well as the secondary.

sounding VERY unlikely at this point that Hayes ends up Irish. But we are in on a Miami commit named Joe Jackson or something like that. Top 150 player. Seeing the recent DE offers that have gone out I think the staff knows too that Hayes is likely ending up elsewhere. Or at least they think they'd better be ready for the possibility.
Read that Alloway is leaning Irish right now with a visit this weekend.
Hamlin has cooled on Pitt. Between ND & Penn St it sounds like.
My darkhorse pick is McCulloch. I guess his mom LOVES ND and wants him to go there.
Studsill is expected to be an ND commit at some point.
McKinely likes ND, but his mom wants him to stay out west i think. Will be a tough pull.

I am going to hazard to guess that you realize that 5 guys from this year's class had already committed to another college. 2015 class it was 4 and 2014 had 3. And ND has lost a half dozen over that same timeframe.

And Kemp's family would prefer ND. If ND pushes hard for him, they could likely flip the kid.

I posted that the bus was close to filling up b/c it looked like we had 6-8 spots left and 4 guys that looked like they were all wrapped up. 2 of those guys, Hayes and Okeke, have since looked like they are trending elsewhere. In the end i think ND will be just fine. If we keep on winning, top 10 teams dont finish with mediocre recruiting classes.

That wasn't a knock DM. I do not follow recruiting at all. I was just saying

Well I agree with you but also don't know what "fine" means in your opinion? As of now I think we end up with a top 12 class and hopefully we have some kids who can make immediate impacts. The key though is "hope" as opposed to knowing when you get big recruits like a Jaylon or Te'o.

This past season our class ended up producing a couple key players but the only one in my opinion that has made a huge impact has been Sanders as a returner. It has been hard to watch our punt and kickoff return game before he came in this season so it is a huge boost. I do like the way Tillery has come in though, solid on the d-line for support, and I think Crawford would be starting if not hurt before the season began. I thought Aliz'e would be a larger impact player but hey all these young kids will keep learning and help us so it is great. The problem is more about the players we will/could lose after this year, mainly on defense, but some on offense as well and who can step in to replace them. If you add that to the fact our defense isn't great up front or in the secondary it hurts more because we will lose 2 of our best players in Day and Russell, possibly Jaylon if he goes pro (hoping he stays!)

You know the year that really hurt us bad was 2013. This is a perfect example of what I mean by our recruiting being overrated. We ended up rated 3rd but Vanderdoes was a 5 star that committed and then decommitted right away yet he was still included in the final rankings. Also that wasn't even the worst part of the story because we ended up with Bryant as a 5 star who barely played and is now with another school... Folston became our main RB but injured for the year. Hunter was out for the year before even enrolling and it seems like he is just now getting back to being a solid player, how good he will be is not known. Heuerman and Deeb retired due to injuries. Kinlaw got kicked off the team. Zaire hurt for year after first start. Smythe hurt and out for the year. Then to top it off one of our prized recruits in Redfield has yet to live up to his recruiting hype, though I do think he is improving which is good. Am I forgetting anyone else that got hurt for the year or isn't on the team lol? It really is crazy how great a class we had but what it turned out to be up to this point. Though to look on the bright side Jaylon and Fuller were both in that class and are two of the best players at their positions in the country.

if the Eliteish DL are not there, the staff does not look to be settling and will look at the elites who are interested regardless of position.

DM looks like he has a good handle on the way things are developing.

Hayes is unpredictable and very impressionable. He bought a case or two of snake oil this past weekend. He is reminding recruitniks of Clark of '15.

That Willingham class still gives me nightmares. Middle Tennessee State out recruited us. Good news though, Ty dropped 3 strokes off his handicap that summer
Yeah, and the main reason we fired him is because he's black!!!

This will make you feel much better. Remember the Ty Willingham days when we had the #91th ranked class in the country lol!

Oh my..... Talk about a history lesson. Can you imagine if we had a class like that now? I'm afraid someone would burn BK's car! I don't think I was on this board much back then, but I can only imagine the hysteria. I would say Crum was the standout from that class.

Nice thread, till someone decided to inject race. some just can't help themselves i guess.

Darius Walker was pretty good as well. The rest were an interesting group.

Are you guys this effin' stupid? That was satirical, in reference to the idiots back then who actually thought that was the reason.

Not true on Kemp's family. One of his uncles was/is very pro ND and made no secret of it. Carlo's parents though are very pro Carlo and became quite pro Michigan during the process. The main reason ND stayed in the picture for so long was because of respect for the uncle and giving ND a fair shot.

Or as has been reported elsewhere, ND had not really pushed for him, and the interest on Kemp's side decreased due to that.

Good to see that you guys now go beyond the "the kid is afraid of the academics" excuse. You know sometimes a kid picks another school because he liked it better...crazy as it sounds

^^^Doesn't sound crazy at all to me. The same reason you come to a ND board to post. You like it here better.

Every fan base has many people who can't even rationalize that possibility.

if you need cheered up when it comes to recruiting justacollegefan then go to hudl and check out of junior highlights of GA DE 5 star 2017 verbal Robert Beal who is espn's number one rated DE for the 2017 class. in his highlights you see really good speed and power that lets him get to the qb very easy. what makes his junior highlights even more impressive is the fact that norcross high school plays in the top division in GA and so he played against top teams all season
