How could the Irish allow Diaco to do go to UNL?

I now live in Omaha and the fan base is excited about the hire, but the Blackshirt is an iconic figure here, and is a high expectation to meet. Something coach Diaco is familiar with. With him graduating from Iowa, he knows the area, and the HS to recruit

Diaco is a phenomenal coach. I figured the Irish would move heaven and earth to have him back.

We had already hired Elko when Diaco was fired by UConn. So that never had a chance of happening.

Diaco was a poor recruiter that had one astounding year. His reliance on matching player stats to positions further limited who ND could go after... and without Louis nix a rare breed for ND his defense would have never worked.

Double D, did you watch a minute of the championship game against Alabama? Diaco runs a simple defense and it never changes. You got squat for a DC. The players here seem to have stopped listening to him in his final season. You're welcome to him.

Well, considering at the time Elko was hired, Diaco was STILL a HC at UCONN -- so, how was that going to happen?

Diaco is great at the "bend-don't-break" defense teaching/using great fundamentals. I suspect NU fans will be happy for 9 games each year.

The title game against 'Bama in 2012 is a case study in what can happen when a good team has time to prepare for Diaco's D. ND had NFL players on the defense in that game too. Saban knew exactly what to run because he knew there wouldn't be any adjustments.

and ND was ill prepared; players and coaches were not prepared and/or focused.
We all know the 'pre-occupations' involved by player and coach.

But, in the end, Bama was way way better! Nothing would have mattered.

Our incredible 2012 year aside, most here were happy when Diaco left. The defense was boring and frustrating to watch opposing QB's have career stats against ND. Sixty yard drives were commonplace, but red zone efficiency on defense was the strength of his schemes, but it felt like we were always on our heels, even against mediocre offenses. His obsession with certain physical measurables dictating scholarship offers was equally frustrating, as the focus on one or two inches in height over heart, motor, and skill left too many talented kids off our board. I was among those happy with the BVG hire and the promise of an aggressive attacking style of play, and was among those missing Diaco after one season of BVG. Both were lazy recruiters, and refreshing to see the energy and effort of Elko recruiting under difficult circumstances, and anxious to see his system in place and his recruiting results next year.

Think you are a bit too critical of Diaco. In championship game Manti and Motta tackled like sissies. You need your best players to play well in the big games. That isn't on Diaco.
I think he is a pretty good DC but like the guy we have now.

True -- big time players need to play big time in big games -- however, there was a quote by Alabama center Barrett Jones (and others) after the NC game as to why was it so easy for Alabama --

Notre Dame is simple on defense," Jones told Sports Illustrated. "They're good because they [keep it] simple. But they're simple."

“We knew from film study that if we shifted a certain way, Notre Dame was probably going to shift a certain way that would give us some blocking angles,” elaborated Alabama guard Anthony Steen. “And they did. Every time.”

“It was kind of easy because they were so predictable,” said Crimson Tide offensive tackle D. J. Fluker. “They ran the same things they did on film.”

That "scheme" is on Diaco to being able to adjust -- the same DC who, in his 1st game against Navy -- did not have a plan B to stop whatever the Middies were doing -- again, that is on Diaco.

He had over a month to add some wrinkles to his defensive scheme but did he take advantage of that time? No; the Alabama offensive players said they recognized everything ND threw at them and they destroyed the defense. Flashback to the '73 Sugar Bowl win over Alabama; the ND defense threw every scheme in the book to slowdown that Alabama offensive machine. It was amazing to watch ND move from one defense into the other. I thought in his last season the defense just didn't play with the same passion like in other seasons under him. JMHO.
