Really excited about some of the athletes that ND will put on the floor in coming years. Colson and Farrell aside (both with a year remaining) I think a core of Pflueger, Ryan, Gibbs, Djogo, Harvey and Mooney give ND a similar group of athletes to that of the Connaughton / Grant / Jackson group. I think the future group are better shooters, however, and have more overall length.

Gibbs really needs to refine his point guard skills, but it's obvious that he's going to be exactly like his brothers, who were warriors. Lockdown defenders that specialised at driving and getting to the free throw line, who could hit clutch shots as well. He's going to be a really good guard in year 3 and 4.

Pflueger will step up next year, I guarantee it. Look for him to become a double digit scorer, add some muscle to his frame, continue to make good decisions with the ball and remain ND's best defender. I think he has the tenacity to be a 6 RPG guy and at 6'6, he has plenty of length for a guard. As he gets stronger, he'll be more and more valuable.

Matt Ryan is really a Tim Abromiatis of sorts, but the key is defense. He could easily be a double digit scorer if he played 25+ minutes, and he's a great shooter, but at 6'8, he must become a better defender and rebounder. He's the obvious replacement for VJ Beachem and will be a more consistent scorer, but ND will give up some athleticism, shot altering and rebounding unless Matt really steps up.

Nik Djogo is a stud. Mark my words. You'll love this kid by the end of his career. Incredibly in shape. Way better athlete that you think and really tough. He's going to be 6'7 and 220lbs, and he's a pretty shooter that will take the ball to the rim. He has the hops to rebound and he's one of those fearless kids who has attitude (like Gibbs). Reminds me a lot of a taller Pat Connaughton and he'll be a captain down the road. I know two coaches in southern Ontario who use to coach against him and Nik Stauskas. Both feel that Djogo has more upside, but Stauskas was simply more refined at the same age. Sky is the limit though. A bigger, way more athletic Steve Vasturia, with the same toughness and leadership skills, but more swagger and fire? Yes please.

DJ Harvey is going to be a stud. This was a huge recruiting win. He has that Jerian Grant / Russell Carter athleticism that is fleeting at ND, especially associated with a player who great size for his position. Has all the tools you want in a "3 man" in ND's system and his game will only continue to develop. He has the makings of a 16ppg + scorer. Really excited about the Dematha standout.

John Mooney is really interesting to me because he's exactly the type of "big" that works well in Breys system. He's a decent athlete, at 6'9, with a 240-250lb frame he's not going to get pushed around and he should be a decent screener, rebounder and he even has a bit of range to his shot. A better Rob Kurz? I hope so. I'd be very happy with that!

The future is bright boys! Post Farrell and Colson I'm excited for a lineup of....

PG: TJ Gibbs
G: Rex Pflueger
G: DJ Harvey
F: Matt Ryan
F: John Mooney

G: Nik Djogo
F: Elijah Burns

I feel the same way, Ontario. I'm assuming Bonzie stays. If not, we'll struggle to finish as high as we have in the ACC the past few years but if he returns, we'll be in the mix for the double bye again. X factor will be Harvey. How good is he?

Good stuff!

Unfortunately,
Duke, UNC, Louisville, will be loaded with 5 star HS all Americans that always seem to have length over ND. Would love to see MB get to a final four or at least win another ACC title.

Thanks IIO. Agree and love the optimism. I thought Geben played some good minutes this year.

Brey has his system firing on all cylinders. (We just didn't have a second closer this year to go with Bonzi to get us to the E8.)

Two questions:

Is Brey done with recruiting this year? After our recent success in the ACC and in the tourney why can't we bring in a top 50 player?

I've asked this before without success: Will Ballis work with the basketball players or do they get their own S&C guy? (I really felt we were out muscled by WVA. Guys like Rex and Geben need to get stronger.)

Stu,

Basketball has their own strength staff. Tony runs the strength program on that end. Balis was hired to work with the basketball program exclusively.

As for recruiting, there is always a chance ND could find a late blooming or under the radar recruit like Djogo, who was a late addition last year, but realistically, I think ND is scouring the country for a graduate transfer big man, who they could pair with Colson in 2017-2018. They are trying to find a rebounder with some shot altering and rim protecting ability. A Zach Auguste type graduate transfer would be perfect if he's out there. You see a team like Bucknell and their big man was a friggen stud. West Virginia couldn't handle him. ND needs to find a mid major that has a graduating senior who wants the opportunity to do a grad program at ND and be part of a team that has the early makings of another quality NCAA group.

This team can be really good next year and down the road. Loaded with talent at the point and wing positions.

Agree with the OP. Pflueger really needs to step up his offense next year, and he seems to have the tools to do so. Hope Harvey can earn meaningful minutes as his athleticism and shot creating are in short supply. Gibbs needs to come in and give us productive minutes and allow Brey to rest Farrell more. Don't have a sense for Mooney, but it would be nice to be able to have Geben and Mooney spell Bonzi and play along side him as situations dictate. Geben at times showed flashes and hope we see this consistently next season. Ryan will never be a defensive force, but needs to improve as a projected starter. The kids shooting stroke is fantastic. If Djogo proves to be as good or better than Stauskus, he will have a hell of a career in Brey's system. As for recruiting, we see so many athletic rebounding rim protectors in the tourney, it's impossible not to wonder why this is a constant position of need for ND. Not talking about a one or two and done NBA prospect, but the kind of players we see routinely on other teams who could play this roll. Hope Brey finds a grad transfer as surmised.

Nice. A bit optimistic but it is not the type of optimism that has no reality in it. If they all step forward, i pretty much expect what you describe.

I do have more expectations from Burns as a down low bruiser who rebounds and screens. More physical than athletic. I am thinking Burns lets Colson roam while Mooney lets Colson own the paint. I am actually hoping that they take over for Geben and Torres.

With Djogo it's "boom or bust". For comparison sake he could end up something like a Nik Stauskas or Dillon Brooks (two Canadians that are from within an hour of him) or he could never materialize. I'm banking on him becoming a stud though. Even the limited m8nutes he played in exhibition, you could see the athleticism. He'll need to learn the system, increase his basketball IQ and learn to compete at the NCAA level, but the dude is an athlete and has a beautiful stroke. Expect some great dunks from him throughout his career.

I agree IIO. I think the move to the ACC is paying off on signing day, PLUS Brey has adapted his system over the years to take advantage of the types of players he can legitimately get..

ND will never be Duke or UNC, but they can have a program similar to Wisconsin IMHO.

On Pflueger, I am one of those who doesn't see why people don't think he will become a double digit scorer next year.

He deferred to the big 4 this year until the staff pushed him to be more active offensively. He was a 40% 3 point shooter trying 2 a game which will probably go up. If he feels it he will try more and if he doesn't he will keep the ball movement going and attack the basket or get put backs.

He was criticised early for attacking the basket and then kicking the ball out. Now, he finishes since he knows he needs to give us more scoring.

FTs is where he needs the most work because he was under 70% last year. I expect his attempts to go up with him attacking the basket and finishing more.

Think of it. One 3 pointer or two a game. One or two mid level baskets. One or two inside baskets.. A couple of FTs a game. Think of all the combinations of how he can score. Think of all the shot attempts that are available with SV and VJ gone (over 800). Then, think how careful he is offensively. He played 35 games and had 24 TOs and 53 assists.

I say he should be a 10-15 point a game guy as a junior without playing out of control or disrupting the offensive flow.

Rex differed a ton of shots to VJ Beachem this year, who was wildly inconsistent. I think that Rex is easily accessible 11-13ppg 75% scorer on even 75-80% of Beachem shots.

REMND...I agree he should average double digits. Hope we're looking at two 3's made on average of five attempts, 80% ft, and two or three finishes around the basket. With Brey's offense, he should be a reliable double digit scorer, and I fully expect he will.

Please stop asking such stupid questions. Every college football team needs it's strength coach 100 % focused on the FOOTBALL team !! This is not intramurals !!

Tony Rolinski is Director of Olympic sport conditioning in addition to overseeing strength and conditioning for the men's basketball program. The ND Department of Strengh and Conditioning is pretty large and serves every sport, with many assistants supporting multiple smaller programs. The football program as Bodi stated has several staff, all of whom are 100% and solely dedicated to football.

Couple thoughts on next years team:
We have 2 of the 10 best players in the ACC, 1 of those being a top 5 player in the country next year IMO. Give me 10 PPG+ from Pflueger or Ryan next year and that already is a top 25 team. Gibbs will only get better also. If Niko is half as good as Nic Stauskus then we might have the best 6th man in the conference.
Add in my personal opinion that Mooney will be a 10 PPG and 6 rebound PG guy and I think we have a top 15 team next year.
Lastly, the Acc is ripe for the taking. Duke will we incredibly down. UNC loses their 4 best players in Meeks, Hicks, Berry and Jackson. FSU also loses Isaac and Bacon.
Louisville will be the best team in the country IMO, but besides that ND has a great shot to finish top 4 again.
-Sorry for the novel, just really miss talking ND basketball haha

Watch this short clip of Djogo and realize that this is a kid that will play the same position as Steve Vasturia and Rex Pflueger. Note the massive athleticism difference. Vasturia was a really good player for ND, don't get me wrong, but this kid can flat run, jump, shoot and plays with swagger. He's a 6'7 Pat Connaughton with 2 guard skills. Saw him play when he still went to Saltfleet in Hamilton. Kid would have been a standout in any sport he played. Runs like a gazelle. From what I hear Tony is doing a great job on his body as well. He was 185lbs in high school, he's closer to 210lbs now, with 6 months before the season. I hope the logjam at guard doesn't limit his ability to play 10 minutes per night as a redshirt freshman, because he can help you in soooo many ways. This kid + DJ Harvey give ND at pair of horses that are serious athletes, with legit size.

There were a lot of good clips in there. How has he done in his redshirt year? He handled the ball pretty well. There were some good defensive plays shown as well. As a freshman, the problem was probably the competition he faced compared to what Vasturia and Beachem saw in HS.

Good film. It is great that:

Harvey and Djogo have 4 years of eligibility
Burns, Mooney and Gibbs have 3.

The competition in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) has gotten pretty fierce actually. We're talking about a single greater metropolitan area that has produced more first round NBA Draft picks than the entire state of New York (considered basketball mecca) in the past decade. From Tristen Thompson, through Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, Nik Stauskas, Kelly Olynyk, Thon Maker, Dillon Brooks, Cory Joseph etc, etc, the GTA has really blown up on the North American basketball radar. That said, most of the elite kids will still attend prep schools to play against the best U.S. competition post high school.

What I like about Djogo are is his speed and his hops. ND needs more "bouncy" kids. When Djogo is a 6'7, 220lb wing, he's going to be a nightmare to defend. He's long like Beachem, but had the attitude of a Connaughton or a Grant. Raw, but very gifted athletically. I think his redshirt year was more about learning the finer points of playing collegiate basketball and developing his body.

Nice that he has time (4 years of eligibility).

Noie has Djogo and Burns as two that are not likely to play much this upcoming year. http://www.ndinsider.com/basketball...cle_9a4ed2d0-0f08-11e7-bd33-0344662fbd8c.html

Any idea on his defense?

Rex looks like a 15pg, 5rb, 4ast guy to me. Him, Bonzi, and Farrell should be a great trio next year. Geben needs to move in with Brey and watch Marc Gasol tape nightly.

I want to add some sharpshooters.

Rex and Bonzie are very effective there as long as they pick their moments. Volume 3s should not be a staple of their game.

The 3 game should be a staple for Ryan and Farrell. Maybe Gibbs and Djogo as well. Mooney is an exciting
