Drew Pyne

There's something completely pathetic about it as well. Not like they're total losers or something, because Pyne was a totally decent starter for us, even if we definitely needed a higher grade of QB, but he was absolutely serviceable, and did yeoman's work even though it's a wonder that guy was ever an elite top 100 prospect. And Buchner made an impulsive move to follow TR to Bama, and he gave it a shot, and didn't win the job, even though he could have just stayed at ND and now be THE guy heading into next season. And Pyne could have stayed as well, even if he never started again, and I'm thinking he left mainly because he felt insulted.

In any case, they were both ideal ND recruits in terms of their overall profile, so I guess they could easily be welcomed back. But neither one of them playing or even being on the team is somehow pathetic. Because it's not like we have some kick-ass QB situation. We are scrambling to get a transfer to save us for next year. Who knows, maybe they'll both rejoin the team and will end up taking snaps.....

So serviceable we lost to Marshall and Stanford. Freeman/rees managing 9 wins with that QB situation was a hell of a job

I’m sure drew is a great kid. But as a QB he is a bad quarterback for the level ND plays at.

Saw nothing from him at new Canaan that he’d ever be productive here or on the power 5 level

You need to send your scouting reports directly to ND football office. Mark them urgent!

Good for him. Apparently he's planning on graduating in May, then transferring again as a grad transfer to play football somewhere else.

Uhh, any coach with the talent gap ND had should and would have won those 2 games with 10 players on the field (No pun intended). Unreal Rees hand picked those 2 and couldn’t develop them. And who would have thought Hartman could regress… take a look at the coaches.

He should get his degree and transfer to UC Davis and play QB there. He’d be great! No joke intended

I honestly think having a guy like Pyne on the team would make for a good insurance policy. This year, for instance, if Hartman had gone down with an injury that kept him out of the lineup for a couple of games, it's difficult for me to believe that Angeli would have been able to lead the team against any of our halfway decent opponents. I'm not saying Pyne would have been lights out great, but somewhat serviceable.

Under this arrangement, he is learning firsthand the value of a Notre Dame degree because I would guess he'll paying for it himself.

I don’t think you understand how hard it is to win games against anybody when your top 2 QBs are so bad they aren’t even playing the sport a year later.

9 wins out of that team was a hell of a job

Freeman/Parker managed 9 wins with a one and done Hartman as well, so any point you are trying to make is horrible.

The schedule was easier last year, and the 9 wins included the bowl game. So that's not an equal comparison.

But I give this year's team a "B" grade for the season - good, but not great.

It was a disappointing year, when you bring in a 6th year QB. They would have managed as many wins with Angeli and/or Minchey at QB. The 3 games they lost were against top 15-20 teams. They brought in Hartman to win those games. That's a fail.

I disagree. Games like Duke and NC State would've been tougher with a rookie QB in there. I doubt we would've won both of those.

Why not get his degree and then a job
If he has eligibility left why not go play? He's not an NFL guy. UC Davis is a good school. OR he could go back close to home. Albany has a good program.

Well that makes sense. He probably should have just stayed here, been a backup, and then transferred out, without the little interlude at ASU. But I suppose it was resourceful of him to bolt, see if he could start somewhere else, and then if it doesn't work out as it didn't, as with Buchner, just return to ND on your own dime and get your ND degree after all. And he's like, a total rich kid so tuition is no problem.

And since he's only going to be here for spring semester, him not actually being on the team won't be too awkward.

That is very cool and probably helps with recruiting. "Even guys that decided to pursue other opportunities came back to campus--that's tells you more than any words can about the ND experience and the lifetime value of the degree you will earn."
