You hit on a key point: that the staff apparently did not anticipate Miami's speed (or quickness, in this case) and I ask myself how is that possible? I operate under the assumption that people who are paid well to coach college football teams should have some clue as to what they are doing. One would think that before even the best informed fan would see a development on the field the guys in the press box would have spotted it and been discussing a plan to counter it.
On another thread someone asked what those with knowledge of football would have done, and you get all these measured responses: "don't try to run outside if you can't outrun them; should have gone straight ahead and been happy with three-yard gains until we tired them out," etc., etc. I hear that and I think, "Thanks alot, Captain Obvious!"
So, Miami obviously tried to stop the run and dare Wimbush to pass. I ask myself, isn't that what every other team should have planned to do? I can just imagine the North Carolina State coaches talking: "Wimbush can't hit the ground when he spits, so let's make sure we concentrate on stopping the pass because he's bound to break out and we don't want it to happen against us."
So it appears ND's coaches either did not realize Miami was trying to prevent us from rushing, or were incapable of stopping them from doing so. Really bad coaches? Or a team that is not anywhere as good as we thought it was? Before we point solely to the coaches, let's remember many of these guys have come in from other programs, where one would assume somebody had a clue.
This is not a problem that is only Kelly's fault. We've heard it for decades. When we played Oregon State in the Fiesta Bowl with Davie, their players said they knew exactly what ND was doing and were surprised ND didn't have any wrinkles; when we played Ohio State under Weis, their players said they knew exactly what ND was doing. When we played Alabama under Kelly, the same thing.
I happen to think our team feasted on teams that were simply not fast/quick whatever you want to call it. And when we played teams that were, we got beat.
