we had a bad game plan, we were flat and Canes were ready.

ND cannot beat elite teams like SC, Mich State and Oklahoma if we are slow. But we beat these teams over the past few years.

Canes are not any faster. That’s bull shit and if u if anyone else CITE that as a liability u r ignorant

Were we a step slow in this game? Sure but not because we r slow. Because we were flat n out of position

It happens. And this was our Bad game
Sometimes u have a bad day. Sometimes u suck.
We sucked on both sides of the ball.

Our ints were either tipped or thrown to Miami
It’s not speed assholes

Just a bad game.

Flat.

Isn’t this what we say almost every big road game with this coach?

Are you saying you wouldn’t want that Miami front seven? Don’t kid yourself. That speed and physicality is needed to win. ND doesn’t have it.

MIAMI is no faster than USC, NC State or Georgia defensively. They just aren't that's facts. The Irish were unprepared and overwhelmed. This sucks but it is a learning experience for some of the guys on this team.

49-14 against USC

Is Miami that much faster than them? Of course not.

This was a matter of one team being psyched and locked in, playing with a chip on their shoulder, and the other team playing passive. It's about mental preparation and tenacity.
The difference between SC and Miami game plans: Against SC ND came out with multiple formations; jet sweeps; threw to all sections of the field; up tempo; screens; and totally neutralize SCs speed. And once we stretched them out we pounded the tackles. Against Miami ND didn't do anything to stretch the Miami defensive front. Why? I don't know.

Go back and watch it again, my friend. It's not just speed, it's strength too, just like Georgia. How many times did you see Wimbush fail to make the edge last night? Every time he tried. How often did someone trail the play from the backside and meet the back at the line of scrimmage? How many times did we break a big run after clearing the line? Very few times because their back end was quick in getting to the ball.

But it is not only that. I know I for one have been saying since the beginning of the season that Wimbush's inability to pass would bite us this season. It did.

And while everyone has been praising our defense, (which has improved a lot, by the way) I think it largely played over its head up to the last couple of weeks.

USC had no interior defensive line; that's the difference.

I agree not a lack of speed just bad game plans on both sides of the ball. Defense has gone into the bend but don't break mentality, they have lost that aggressiveness from the SC game etc. Offense, Long just didn't get running JA side ways doesn't work. Should have ran between the tackles take 3 yards a pop, and had some QB draws to get BW into the game.

When I hear things like "bad game plan," it makes it sound like the coaching staff just randomly packs up a list of 20-30 plays and sticks to them. It fails to take into account that even the lousiest coach has probably forgotten more about football than the best of our posters will ever know. These guys live in their offices around the clock during the season, poring over film, analyzing every tendency they see. They obviously choose offensive plays and defensive sets based on what they think will succeed. And after having the kind of success we've had earlier this year, they deserved to be confident going into that game.

I don't think our team was flat. I think we came out ready to play. I don't think our team played poorly because it was improperly prepared. I think our team ran into a good team firing on all cylinders with a raucous crowd fueling the fire.

Clap Clap you get the gold star for Domer homerism. We'll get em next time right? This team was a flat as a pancake in yesterday's game. Undeniable fact. Undeniable fact in the 8 yrs of Kelly that has been a constant theme. The man is a piss poor motivator as a coach. Team is never ready to take the next step as a program. Never... It's OK to lose but being humiliated is not acceptable. We were humiliated and hv been in every program defining moment for 25 yrs. Execuses are sought rather than answers to the exercise in futility that has become ND football. If winning is the goal then Kelly is not the coach for that. If program and image manager for the ND program is the end goal then Kelly is the perfect fit.

Wrong. Very wrong.

I was there. Could see plays develop. Wimbush never ran he had plenty of chances

Miami’s AB sux n all he has is a run up the middle that we did not prepare for or defend. He did it every game this year

We were flat n a step out of position all night. U could see it in warmups. We looked lethargic. Like we were drugged. No energy

And our second drive had s key drop. That could have changed the game. Taken the crowd down a bit. Changed field position. But claypool dropped.

They stacked the line. And Wimbush had a bad night throwing and did not run

Speed was not a factor at all 5 teams we beat this year could have beat us with our scheme n how we played

ND did not match the intensity UM brought to this game. Huge game and ND wasn't mentally there for it. Hopefully they can regroup and realize how they must prepare for BIG games.

Tommy

Their front seven has been a joke all year. Average

They were coached on how to diffuse our o line.

Here is what they did. They crowded the line. There was no where to run. They keyed on Adams.

If Wimbush dropped back they stayed in lanes

There was no rush until the late third quarter Then they unleashed dogs cause we had to throw

The Canes game plan was simple. Stop the Irish run game at all costs and make them throw. Guess what? That plan worked to a tee for Miami. just look at the film. The line backers were a yard or two behind the defensive line. There was no where to run at all. So with no passing game from ND, it was easy for Miami. ND defense wore down. Miami isn't a great team. They played a great game while ND played lousy. We'll see how good the Canes are if they make it in the playoff. Anyway, it's over. Time to move on. I'm sure the sun will rise tomorrow and I still have to go to work.

Speed was an issue in the context of the way Adams bides his time waiting for the OL to create running lanes. Miami took this away and Adams was consistently being tackled from penetration from his backside. You either alter your approach to quick hitting runs, and change Adams to Williams for example, or you stay the course believing our size and power will wear them down. Our turnovers gave them momentum and the game got away from us, and this chess game became irrelevant. Wimbush looked great on the opening drive and who knows how the game might have evolved if St Brown had made a diving catch in the end zone on that drive. After that, Wimbush was totally off his game. Momentum is an incredible force, and they got it early and never looked back.

True. But more than the st brown play which was s typical Wimbush overthrow—. Didn’t claypool drop a key pass ?

I'm not even a fan of Kelly's per se. I think he is a decent coach, not a great coach, and not a lousy coach.

And I'm not the guy saying we'll get 'em next time. I'm saying we lose every time we play a team like that.

I find it hard to believe our coaching staff, good bad or ugly, failed to impress upon the team the importance of the game, leading them to come out flat.

All is true except Holts, Myer, Savannah and others impress kids with the importance of a game. Flat is flat. Lou’s teams were flat agains Air Force n Stanford who sucked back then
But then there is the game plan and making adjustments. Kelly failed on those

Im afraid the poster of this thread is totally wrong. I was at the game and Miami was faster at every position. They easily handled our receivers with man coverage. With the early St Brown route aside, they contained us very well.

They blew past our line more often than not. Coaches can try to scheme away from it; that's their job. But nothing was going to counter that advantage.

It's not a learning experience for McGlinchy. Speed has exposed him yet again and being a 1st round draft choice as a RT may be fading.
