Clay Helton now the Perm. HC at USC

Don't both of your starting DTs graduate? I am sure you have solid backups.

There's a lot of bashing here of Haden. I admit that his previous hire from an HR standpoint was a failure, but from a football standpoint, his last hire was a GRAND SLAM. Most especially when judged by it's effectiveness against their number 1 rival. SS killed us.

I was pretty confident they would stay in the usc family. I don't think Haden goes anywhere and I think usc will continue to hire and promote from within their own coaching tree. Why not? It works.

Good call

SC never spoke to fisher. SC made an offer to Pete Carrol that was turned down and was in discussion with Chip Kelly last week. These two things I know (despite Kelly's denial. I would guess (I do not know) that Kelly also declines.
Could have waited for Richt.

It's interesting to note, but with the hiring of John McKay, SC has never made a big time hire. It's not something we have done the last 60+ years. I can't say if that is on purpose, but that certainly is what has occurred.

McKay
Robinson
Tollner
Smith
Robinson (2nd term)
Hackett
Carroll
Kiffin
Sarkisian
Helton

McKay & Robinson had no previous HC experience, but both were long time AC's at Oregon.

Tollner & Smith were previously HC's. Neither were outstanding coaches.

Robinson's 2nd stint was after coaching the Rams, where he had several successful years in the NFL.

Hackett was a HC at Pitt, with little success.

Carroll had limited success in the NFL as a HC.

Kiffin was a HC at the Raiders and Tennessee. Disaster in the NFL and avg at Tennessee.

Sark was an avg HC at Washington.

Helton no HC experience.

So, outside of Robinson's second tenure, SC hasn't hired a BIG TIME/VERY SUCCESSFUL HC going back to McKay.

i have no idea whether Helton will be successful or not. Stanford will be a good litmus test, followed by our bowl game and then Alabama first game next year. We will all know a lot more after the Alabama game.

What I do like is that Helton wants to be physical; hopefully that means more running and a desire to dominate on defense. We have gotten away from being physical under Kiffin and Sark. What he does regarding AC's will go a long way to determine his success.

I am neither happy nor upset by the hire. I'll get a better feeling for Helton as the season comes to a close.

FIGHT ON

(1) Edited to correct Hackett info.

Hackett was head coach at Pitt before southern cal. I know Tollner was head coach at San Diego State after he left USC, but was he a head coach before USC?

I was stunned when I heard this. I didn't think that there was anyway that USC would settle for this guy. Good for us, though.
