Getting back to Notre Dame in the ACC . All these posts . 8-9 games in the ACC makes us a regional school with little opportunity to be what we were ,a national school with a national schedule .Forget the money aspect and what it does for the ACC to get a TV network , not a big deal . As far as a conference ,ND has to just win games against the USCs, Michigans, Georgias etc ,plus the big time programs in the ACC.

I think at some point ND will be forced into a conference so they will become a regional team to an extent though SC will always be on the schedule, but Stanford might fall into an every third year type of team. ND will have other offers than the ACC if the winds of change are blowing toward Southend

CVGR is a mentally challenged individual that needs to just concentrate on his life & leave people alone. There is a difference between not liking someone & having an obsession with someone. I clearly pointed examples of when ND won titles at the end of the regular season in those days. You couldn't understand. I then pointed out how in that same dynamic, ND would have won the title in 2012 if it was the 40's, & you once again couldn't understand.
You choose to only understand what fits your crazy world.
And been on the premium board under different name LONG before I came to this board. Was also a Mod on another ND site since 2004.
And don't speak to me of C-130's, I spent 6 years jumping out of them.

I was reading his wiki bio a while back and he had an outstanding resume'. He was definitely quirky. That combined with following Ara didn't help... His game plan versus Texas was masterful. That D could bring it....

Montana is a big time putz. I am not surprised you know him. Another guy living in the past. His reputation with his autograph sessions are legendary. He did a fine job managing his kids football careers. How did that work out for them?

If bowl games did not count toward the NC, it is questionable whether ND would have been in the number one slot over Alabama at the end of the regular season. Even with the better record.

Thanks for the comments. We follow this closely on warchant because of our own relationship with the ACC. It's not easy being in a conference - there are always issues. But there are benefits too. There is no better conference when you exclude football. Problem is, you can't exclude football because of its importance on so many levels. I would like ND not to merely join the ACC; I want them to help lead it. I want them to transform it to be more like ND - I am not interested in ND acting like a traditional ACC member.

There is a group of us that follow conference realignment very closely. Too much has happened in the past that impacted us when we weren't even a party to the transaction. You have to stay vigilant watching this stuff. It just so happens that we caught wind of "rumors" regarding a possible ACC network announcement this summer - and some of those rumors include ND - and they include rumors that NBC will be part of that network. How that works is beyond me as ABC owns ESPN. But who knows.

Brent McMurphy of ESPN reported three months ago that he has seen the projections of revenue that if ND joined the ACC - ND would make more money doing that than what they currently make.

But I agree - ND will never join just to make more money. ND is not going to sacrifice its identity. But is its identity totally dependent on independent status in the current landscape of college football? Interesting question. The Irish have to answer that for themselves.

However, what's been left out of this discussion is the other competing force (besides TV contracts) and that is the continued effect of conference realignment. It will continue. 3 years ago John Calipari said it was unquestioned that what is now the NCAA will morph into a self-regulated cartel of 4, 16-team Super Conferences. He appears to be spot-on. Rick Neuheisel echoed those comments earlier this week. The thought is that either the SEC or the BigTen will make a move to a 16 team league within the next 12 months. Once that happens, there will be a land-grab among the other conferences to add teams quickly. It won't take long to unfold. The likely outcome is that the Big12 goes away and is consumed by the remaining 4 conferences (ACC, BigTen, SEC, Pac-12). Once that happens the 4 Supers self-regulate, rid themselves of NCAA, conduct their own playoff which would also include the NCAA football playoff and basketball tourney. So whether or not ND can garner the TV revenue to compete with conference networks is largely irrelevant. ND will not choose to remain Independent in the face of these combinations and will be forced to join (presumably) the ACC - something it will surely do. Basically a game of musical chairs is about to ensue.

And one of the real forces for going to a four conference format is that it locks in what the Big Ten always wanted - going back to 1994 when it refused to join the Bowl Alliance Series - it wants the Rose Bowl to be a permanent play off game and the "playoff" is really the "plus one" system.

Going to four 16 team conferences would make CFB the NFL junior. Lots of money to be made, for sure, but it would destroy a lot of things that make CFB the game that it is.
