BK is a better coach than ND deserves...

So what are examples of coaches in the tier ND deserves?

Notre Dame doesn't need "the second best coach in the game"....Notre Dame needs a coach who employs fundamentals....simplifies the basics to develop the talent that he is recruiting...in order to maximize player performance....whose playcalling matches the situation. We need a coach who can win games that we aren't supposed to win from time to time....and who beats the teams we are supposed to beat....

Answer your own question SAL? I am not looking to fire the coach you are?

You just described what every AD and GM from HS to the NFL is looking for. Do you have a name?

Tom Herman is a good start...PJ Fleck is worth a look....I could go on..but whats the point? Notre Dame has to decide what it wants in the football program. Does it want to compete at the highest level or not? Thats a separate argument....This one is about Brian Kelly and whether or not he has maxed out....I for one think he has.

Again Holtz 94-96, Davie, Ty, Charlie and now BK have not live up to the lofty standards put forth here.

When nobody over a 22 year period can live up to expectations then maybe the expectations are out of whack?

they might be....but expections do not create the Tulsa moments we have seen over and over again from Brian Kelly.

This is NOT about wins and losses. Can't some of you get that through your heads. Under Coach 8 & 4 this team week end and week out is not prepared to play. The game management, game plan and the ridiculous side line antics which embarrass the players and fans is jaw dropping. He has continually shown he is a gimmick coach who is way beyond his skis. This team is poorly coached each game. He Doesn't belong at this level. Alibi all you want, take away the one season where every piece of luck went ND's way and his real record would show itself. His real talent is that he is just good enough or bad enough to keep both teams in every game we play. Just bad. Move on and get over it.

What makes you think those guys would succeed when 5 others failed over 22 years?

You answered your own question you don't know. ND keeps digging a coaching hole and then buying out contracts.

Pretty simple rule if you find yourself digging a hole. STOP digging.

First you have to define succeed. Given the environment under which an ND coach operates what do you think a fair criteria for success would be?

So you are a Kelly fan and not a ND fan. Got it!

The Tulsa game was 7 years ago. So we can't talk discuss the 12-0 season 5 years ago? But you can bring up the Tusa game from 7 years ago.

I also remember ND winning 4 straight after the Tulsa game including beating USC in the Coliseum for the first time in a decade. So if you want to cherry pick over 7 years. Let's cherry pick.

Some people feel comfortable with a security blanket of mediocrity.

Brian Kelly is the coach...he has the shovel...and he is doing the digging.

never mentioned the "Tulsa game"...I said "Tulsa moments"....it goes to Kelly's mindset...not an individual game.

I've asked the same question. What made a HOF and champ at ND walk away and come back 3 years later to coach a semi doormat?.

And what made the 2nd best guy in the game look at the job and walk away?

Steve Spurrier did the same thing.....so did Nick Saban....

I respond in kind. Those posters get what they put out and so will you.

If you abide by the Golden Rule so will I

I think we know what Meyer did. He went 7-5 the year after Tebow and was staring at Saban.

Obviously, OSU presented itself with a,great opportunity and a chance to get out of the SEC wars Very smart move

Yeah, I think a 2-5 team setting a primary goal of getting Bowl eligible and getting the extra practices is pretty smart.

What would your goal be? Win the National Title at 7-5?

you are the one who said he is the "second best coach" in the college game. yet he beat Saban....didn't he?

right now....Brian Kelly would take 7-5 and call it a good finish....and get the team ready to play Virginia in a bowl game.

They've played 4 times. They are 2-2. Saban has 5 rings , Meyer has 3 rings.

Yeah Meyer is #2 literally right now and overall.

Kelly has been a good coach for ND. The overall program is much improved and recruiting reflects this, and the on field record of wins and loses has been good. The second guessing of some of his in game decisions against Tulsa or Northwestern or Clemson, etc... are fair criticisms, but pale in comparison to his overall success on the field. All in all, felt Kelly was a really good fit given the demands and constraints that are somewhat unique to ND.
Kelly made a HUGE mistake with the BVG hire, and he compounded this by keeping BVG beyond last season. The BVG hire and the decision to keep BVG are two HUGE mistakes, and the fact these were influenced by his personal relationship with BVG reveal a level of poor judgement I never expected of Kelly, and this alone is reason to look for a new HC. Throw in the fact that this year has been a total disaster with poor indefensible in game decisions the norm, and widespread underachieving throughout the team, and we have an embarrassing product on the field and an embarrassing finger pointing HC off. For all these reasons and more, it is time for ND and for Kelly to terminate the relationship. An amicable divorce that recognizes all the good that was accomplished, but one that recognizes it is time for a change.

Oh come on!! I read his book. He said he left because he felt ND stopped "attacking". He loves the school and didn't want to say his hands were tied and he could get the players.

So Meyer said it for him.

an articulate argument which I totally agree with. To fully believe that a change is now needed does not ignore the good that Kelly has brought to Notre Dame. He has...But the sheer number of unacceptable losses and post season failures are piling up....those of us who believe the time has come are saying so. Notre Dame has an equal number of national championships and losing seasons...11. Kelly is giving us one but not the other....Number 12, the losing season.

I concur as well. It's time.

However the same fate will fall upon the next coach unless systematic changes are implemented.

If you want a great coach make it a great job. And a great job is any job where you can get great players. Bama, LSU, USC, Michigan, OSU, Tennessee, Clemson, FSU, UF and Texas.

It's no secret why Saban and Meyer coached at 2 schools on that list.

Last comment is this 28 years ago The U and ND played football at a level that was unmatched 88-90.

Both Administrations made a decision the juice was not worth the squeeze. That game in 2 weeks will be a perfect symbol of what happens to a football program, when winning football games are not priority #1.

Very depressing.

Yes, 100% agree. Kelly deserves so much better. So please, please coach pack your bags and hit the road.
Go back to the Mac where you belong.

who is ignoring that truth? Are administrative concessions needed? Of course...they have happened before and can happen again. But the focus in this debate has been on Brian Kelly himself...and his coaching style and liabilities. He brings his decisions to the table...not the administration.
