Al Golen leaving?

Only took 36 hours to leave for a new job. I said it during the game and it came true.

That was a defense prepared by a coach already out the door. I don't care how professional you are, when you know you're gone, it's different.

That was the most unprepared and poorly called game under golden in his 3 years here.

Pathetic. I know freeman in front of cameras will be all appreciative, and it didn't have an impact, blah blah, but he needs to learn from his.

Al goldens last meaningful call for ND was to put Gray on Smith 1-1, cover 0, on 3rd and 11 with the game on the line, and have him play middle leverage like he had deep safety help.

Frichan crazy.
Ouch!

Utter nonsense.

The Golden to Bengals DC rumor started the first week in Dec. after the Steelers scored 44. You didn’t predict it then.
Exactly. It's the byproduct of success. The guy is going to the highest level available in his chosen profession. It's a better gig. On his way out people are gonna rip him because the clearly better team won ? Ridiculous.

You struggle to follow so I’ll help even more. I didn’t predict him leaving to the bengals, I predicted our D would be and was unprepared and poorly coached because our DC was already out the door.

That was an atrocious coaching job with 11 days to prepare for the NC

Mike Mickens.
If promoted. You think he will run the same man blitz scheme we’re running now ?

No, people are ripping because he was already out before the NC, and it showed. People are human, you don’t prepare or coach the same when you know you’re done next week or tomorrow.

He will put a ton of trust in his corners and secondary as a whole I would think. Hopefully everyone realizes who gray is now as a player.

Re watched game, can’t believe it, but he was even worse than I thought. I didn’t catch all his bad angles and missed tackles as well during the game Monday night.

My concern with mickens is he’ll lean heavily on freeman who was not a good DC.

Seems to me that freeman’s scheme works best when he has a dominating d line. We need that component next season

No, I do. You blamed it on the Bengals noise. And we all can see the Monday morning quarterbacking. You just like to squawk.

I agree it was far from Al’s best effort because Howard running on us was a killer. The biggest problem was the front 4 had zero pressure and the blitzing was handled well by OSU.

In fact, the “back to NFL” story was in the news most of the year. Just saw a blurb from back in Oct about it …

Same with psu but he didn’t put the secondary in moronic situations vs psu

Osu dis the same run plays osu did; and we couldn’t run fit them two weeks in a row

You absolutely have to ask yourself, where was Golden’s head on Monday night ?

And what impact did that have on the game?

You can’t blast Kelly for flirting with the Eagles and give Golden a pass for flirting with the Bengals

It's an intriguing job. Elite QB, was in the Super Bowl a few years back. A decent defense and the Bengals are up with the Ravens and Bills. Bengals are the last team to beat the Chiefs in the playoffs.

Al Golden coaches abunch of 3 & 4 star players into one of the best defenses in the country (in back to back yeaers) -- leads the development of the side of the ball where ND is developing/discovering tons of overlooked players and turning them into all americans and nfl draft picks ... and you guys are complaining that he got torched by a bunch of 5 star players in the national championship game? lol

Imagine what Golden would do with some of the stars on OSUs roster on their edges of the defense and in their pass rush lol

Depends upon how focused he was

And, can multi millionaires be coached

That’s why he’s jumping ship.

Al Goldens head was in the game; we got beat by a better team. A team with skill position players in numbers we haven't faced this year. Our DL is so thin it finally caught up to us against those skill players. That's the story, not where was AL Goldens head at

Maybe you should send your resume to Marcus Freeman. Throw your hat in as a candidate to replace Al Golden as DC. You're so great at analyzing and criticizing the defense. 🙄

The newish reality of all this is that coaches, assistants, etc leave on a regular basis anymore. If you're good at what you do... someone else is going to want to hire you.

My biggest issue with all this is that everyone, NFL and NCAA should freeze any transactions like this until after their respective season is over. The NFL is about as sleezy as they come anyway, but poaching college coaches before their season is over is bad.

One does have to question where Goldens head was prior to that game Monday night. You know for a fact that Cincy was in talks with him prior to that game and most likely for several weeks. This crap doesn't just happen over night.

I would disagree

With third and 11 and Gray isolated on Smith, how could you not put a safety over the top to help him out

That’s a coaching error

And they didn't get any of our run fit issues from penn state corrected. OSU ran very similar running plays to penn state for big success and huge gains. Their run game is what won them the game, more so than their receivers.

We didn't have anyone account for allar a few times and that hurt and howard did the same thing.

We also ran a lot of zone, we are not good at zone.

It just really sucks to be going into the last two playoff games and your STUD DC already knows he's out. We know that now. He was who taylor wanted once cinci played their last game, and golden said yes weeks ago.

By running a variety of coverages maybe Golden was using the national championship game as an audition of sorts for the NFL teams interested in his services, hey look at me!

Golden did a great job in his 3 years at ND. But not surprised he jumped at this chance, as I'd heard that his family still lived in Cincinnati and liked it there, and he gets to try being an NFL DC for the first time in his career. Best of luck to him. Hopefully Freeman finds a good replacement.

None. All your doing is questioning an extremely well respected coach and his professionalism. Lame and lazy.

I guarantee he himself had zero discussions with the Bengals. His agent handled the entire thing until his interview after the game. It's pathetic how some here are questioning his dedication and professionalism. It's embarrassing.

So pathetic. Al Golden is going to be at the very top of his chosen profession. How many here can say that ? You're reactions to the outcome of the game are nothing more than emotional, anger filled drivel. For someone who says they played the game at the college level it's laughable. The clearly better team won. It really is that simple. If you did indeed play you should know that sometimes you get beat and sometimes you lose. ND got beat.

Do you understand the coverage they were in ? You make the call and if it works you get all the praise. If not you get questioned. It's the nature of the beast. If they had sacked the QB would you still be saying it was a coaching error ? Hindsighters are lazy.

Actually watching that play. It looks like they did have a safety drop back, but he was in the middle of the field, and broke to the other side to help the DB to the opposite side.

It's obvious these guys have never coached football. But let's say for a second his mind was on the Cincy job. What exactly would he be thinking about or focused on that would interfere with his coordinator responsibilities? They're not asking him to game plan, as the season is over. Unlike a college job, he's not being asked to recruit. The combine isn't until late February and draft is in April, so I seriously doubt he's being asked to evaluate prospects. So where's the distraction? Weis took the ND job while preparing for the super bowl and the Pats won. So how is that possible? And unlike Golden he really was doing two jobs at once, trying to put together a staff and recruit while game planning for the playoffs/SB. It's just lazy supposition with no proof to support the opinion.

You can't blitz and expect have any kind of safety help unless you specifically assign 2 guys to 1 receiver when playing against a boundary receiver running a fade route. He could only get help if it's a bracket coverage (2 on 1), 2 man under, or a soft cover 2. Golden took a gamble and lost. As much as everyone wants to blame Gray, he was in a very difficult position especially since he played inside leverage, which in that scenario it was likely more probable that Smith was going to run an in route as opposed to a fade. So I don't blame Gray for using that technique. In hindsight he should have played outside leverage with his back towards the near sideline. And while many want to blame Gray, I think the guys blitzing have just as much responsibility for not getting Howard pressured. It's a team game.
