Every other team was in control of their own destiny just like Notre Dame. They all lost a game in the regular season. That’s their own fault. If they were 12-0, then ND would have no claim. Winning a champ game is what allows them to distinguish themselves from ND in most years.

ND would need to go undefeated…if these other teams didn’t lose their games…too bad they weren’t able to do that and now need to win. Its a double edged sword for ND as well as these champ games. Ultimately win all of your games and you almost have nothing to worry about come Championship Week.

Why are you here? ND played 12 FBS games. All of these other schools playing today have only played 11. These games are their 12th data point not their 13th.

No one hardly ever plays FCS teams anymore. Big ten plays 12 game schedule, 9 big ten teams, 1 or 2 home and homes, and maybe a G5 team or 2. That’s more P5 teams than ND.
Go look at the schedules of many ACC, and SEC teams, they do in fact play FCS teams. I know a handful of PAC-12 do as well.
