Football Transcript: What Al Washington told local writers following Wednesday's practice

We spoke to Notre Dame defensive line coach Al Washington following Wednesday's practice. Here's a transcript of that conversation.

Questions may be paraphrased.

AL WASHINGTON

How has Jason Onye improved?

“He's smart. He's very coachable. He cares. He's impressive. We just have to keep working on little things.”

Where does his physical transformation show?

“His overall athleticism. He can bend better. His output’s higher, longer. Especially inside the trenches. When you're in better shape, everything's calmer. He's maturing that way, and that investment’s helped him.

How are you feeling about the quality depth of guys you could actually put in a game such as Jason Onye?

“We're definitely trending. Jason's a guy coming into the spring we said, ‘Hey, we're counting on him to take that step.’ We have guys that have played. The first wave of guys and even (Gabe) Rubio played a lot last year. I wouldn't say a lot, but he played enough. Jason is really kind of making a point to assert himself in that role. The thing I trust about Jason though is I know he's going to know what the heck's going on. The challenge sometimes is when a kid is out there, you don't always know they know what they're doing. Like Jason, at least I feel like if he makes a mistake, we can address it. Say, ‘What did you see?’ You get the feedback. That's the biggest thing being a young guy that you can catch that. He's trending well. I'll let his play do the talk, but he's fun to work with. It wasn't handed. Last year, he's come a long way. He wasn't happy all the time. He wasn't playing. He kind of bunkered in there and didn't complain, didn't run, just anchored down and got better. He just has to keep doing that. He's been a joy.”

Do you feel like you have a rotation that you could roll with in a game?

“Yeah. We definitely do. We can be pretty good. I don't want to talk it. The play is going to do the talking. But I feel we're trending in the right direction. We have just enough, the right pieces, to be not only talented but tough. We have a bunch of guys that are kind of like, I don't want to say chip on their shoulder, but nobody's really been established yet. I don't want to say nobody. Rylie Mills, Howard Cross, those guys have played. JB [Jordan Botelho] has played. I'm talking about the younger guys, like the guy you just talked to [Onye]. That's a healthy combination we have, so I feel good about it. I really do. Feel really good about it.”

How is Javontae Jean-Baptiste?

“Good. He’s doing great.”

Is he a vyper? Strong side?

“Javontae hasn't played that vyper position. He's been the [field] end. He'll play off the edge quite a bit. He's done a great job. He's embraced everything. I know him. I've been around him three years. I know where he's coming from. He’s played a lot of ball. This isn't his first rodeo, but he has taken it upon himself to take those next steps. He's been great. He's done a really good job.”

How has Nana Osafo-Mensah handled an elevated role?

“He's progressing fundamentally, but I think overall, as a leader, he's emerging as one of the top leaders on defense. He has a talent in terms of communicating, and the kids respond to him. To his credit, he's kind of embraced that. He's progressing very, very nicely. He’s going to help us this year. He's done a fine job.”

Why does Jordan Botelho fit at vyper?

“Here’s the deal: the vyper position, historically, when you look at defenses, that is a guy that has linebacker traits because of what you can do with him. JB’s a great example. He was a rover at one point. He was a linebacker at one point. Now he’s in that role. Junior [Tuihalamaka], same deal. Josh Burnham, same deal. That ability to play off the ball and be comfortable is really, really important. It speaks to what you want to be able to do. We have packages where we have true, four-down linemen. We do that too. That position, historically, has been a guy that has traits off the ball as well as on the ball. The more comfortable that guy is off the ball the more you can do.”

What can Botelho do to seize the role as an every-down guy?

“Jordan just has to take care of Jordan. Jordan has to take care of his business. He has to take care of his body. He has to take care of the things that are important to him. Keep the main thing the main thing, and everything else will take care of itself. He’s a great kid. He works his tail off. He really cares. He’s really matured and really made a point to go for it. He could’ve went any other way but forward with it, and he decided to go forward with it. JB’s thing is him taking care of his business. Because the kids love him, and I certainly love him. He’s a joy to work with. He’s progressing. He’s turning into an every-down guy, not just a third-down guy. Be a guy out there every down. That’s the goal, and I think he’s becoming that.”

What’s been Junior Tuihalamaka’s development from linebacker to vyper?

“Junior is so damn smart. He’s really sharp. When he was playing linebacker, stack backer, he was damn good. He can see it. He can feel it. He’s instinctual beyond his years. That element has been awesome. He’s a guy on the grass that can solve problems. And he’s tough. Obviously talented. He’s taken off. He’s progressing really nice. I have a high level of faith in him, trust in him, in terms of him knowing what’s going on and him willing to fight in tough moments. He’s progressed really nice. I’m excited about him. A year ago, again, he was another guy in the linebacker room. He didn’t really come to us until summer, late summer. And really it was kind of like he was doing double duty during the year. Now it’s all vyper. That’s helped him, and he’s done a fine job.

What’s Tyson Ford’s upside playing inside?

“Tyson’s thing is he’s very athletic. For him it’s been a shift moving inside. Right now he’s filling out. He’s like 285-290, whatever it is. The thing Tyson has going for him is athleticism. He just has to put it all together. He’s a young kid. Sometimes the rush to have it now, it’s not really — he’s trending fine. He’s putting it together, and he’s done a fine job. He’ll be a really good player. For an inside guy, he’ll be that athletic big boy that you want, that you recruit, that you’re trying to find. He just has to stay the process and continue to develop. He’s still young. He came here last year as a freshman and early enrolled, right? So he’s still young. He’s working at it, and he’s doing a really fine job.”

How’s Aidan Keanaaina doing?

“Yeah, he’s fully healthy now. He’s working in at the nose position. We’re pretty deep there. He’s part of the depth. He’s working at it getting himself going. That group, the tackles group — the tackles and nose combination — we have a chance to be pretty doggone stout in there. He’s doing well.”

Recruiting Notes on 2024 S target Kennedy Urlacher

I talked with 2024 safety target Kennedy Urlacher this evening. He is the son of former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher and plans to visit Notre Dame this Friday.

Urlacher has already met head coach Marcus Freeman and safeties coach Chris O'Leary. The two flew out to Chandler (Ariz.) January 23 to personally offer Urlacher, who had high praise for Freeman, O'Leary and the rest of the Irish staff.

“I love all the coaches, all the coaches have been really good to me. I like the way they recruit and the overall football program," Urlacher told Inside ND Sports. "Coach Freeman is by far one of my favorite coaches that I’ve ever met.”

The 6-foot, 180-pound safety is placing importance on academics, bonds with coaches and immediate playing opportunities as he nears a decision.

“I’d say my most important values are somewhere I could get on the field fairly quickly, a good education and then good relationships with coaches," Urlacher said.

Urlacher is rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals. He is ranked No. 27 among safeties in the 2024 class. He totaled 34 tackles, two pass deflections, one interception and one fumble recovery last season for Chandler High School.

Urlacher holds 20 total offers including Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Miami (FL), Penn State, TCU, Washington and Wisconsin. He visited Miami (FL) March 21 and Kansas and Kansas State earlier this month.

Recruiting Notes on 2025 LB target Brett Clatterbaugh

I caught up with 2025 inside linebacker target Brett Clatterbaugh before he's expected to visit Notre Dame this Tuesday and Wednesday. It’ll be his first trip to campus since landing an offer on ND’s annual Pot of Gold Day recruiting event March 17.

Clatterbaugh said he’s eager to look at Notre Dame in its entirety and specifically see what the football program offers.

“We’re going try and hit as much as possible from the academic side of things all the way to campus tours, football tours, practices and meetings,” Clatterbaugh said. “I’m mostly looking at football and their program, facilities, culture and the whole nine yards … just meeting [and] spending time with players and coaches.”

Clatterbaugh said head coach Marcus Freeman's playing and coaching experience with linebackers and defenses is intriguing.

"I'm a defensive guy, so it's always a plus to have the head man in charge like your side of the ball quite a bit," Clatterbaugh said. "Having him as a defensive mind is always great. He's a great head coach either way, offensive or defensive mind."

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound prospect from Culpeper (V.A) Eastern View finished with a team-high 87 total tackles (eight for loss) and two sacks last season. He also won the Virginia Class 4A Division wrestling state championship in February. Rivals rates Clatterbaugh as a four-star prospect. He is ranked as the No. 5 inside linebacker in the 2025 recruiting class.

Clatterbaugh reports 12 offers including North Carolina, Penn State, South Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin. He said there is no firm outlook for cutting his list down but said academics will play an important role.

“There's no timetable on it at all,” Clatterbaugh said. “I'm a big believer, when it hits, it hits. I'm going to continue to visit, continue to talk to a bunch of coaches and keep my doors [as] wide open as possible.

“Every college visit I take, we always make it a point to tour the campus, because that's going to be my life outside of football,“ Clatterbaugh said. “I'll be going to school to play football but at the end of the day, my academics are more important. I want to go to a school that feels right for me … where I can grow and mature academically and ultimately get a good degree.”

Basketball WBB: Notre Dame offseason portal/recruiting/personnel rumblings

Notre Dame incoming freshman point guard Hannah Hidalgo will be on the national stage again Saturday night in Portland, Ore,, when she suits up for Team USA in the inaugural Nike Hoop Summit women's game against a team of 19u World All-Stars. Team USA comprises some of the nation's top high school seniors in girls basketball. Tipoff at the Moda Center is 7:30 p.m. ET and will be followed by the 25th anniversary men's game at 10 p.m. The game can be seen on NBATV and the NBA app.

Hidalgo was recently named co-MVP of the McDonald's All American girls game in which she broke the scoring record (26) and tied the game's record for steals (8). She is ranked the as No. 1 point guard nationally in her class by ESPNw and the No. 5 player overall. The Irish coaching staff was not surprised by her dominant performance in the March 28 senior showcase.

Her advanced skills will allow Notre Dame to take its time getting All-American Olivia Miles up to speed for summer workouts, which begin in mid-June, when the 5-foot-6 Hidalgo enrolls. Miles, I'm told, had deferred her impending knee surgery a couple of times but is expected to finally have the procedure done next week after Easter. Head coach Niele Ivey said after the Irish were eliminated in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 by Maryland on March 25 that she expected Miles' timeline for recovery to be June. Sometimes those timelines are moved up or back depending on what doctors discover during the surgical procedure.

Once Miles is healthy, a source says Hidalgo won't simply be Miles' backup, but they'll play together at times. The lineup composition could consist of anything from four guards and a forward to two posts with a forward and two guards. Center Lauren Ebo and guard Dara Mabrey, both out of college eligibility, are the only two Irish players at this juncture expected to exit the roster.

McDonald's All-American Emma Risch, a 6-2 guard and one of the best 3-point shooters in the nation, will enroll with Hidalgo in June. She's also an outstanding passer.

As far as post players go, that's Notre Dame's priority both in the transfer portal this offseason and on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class. Keep in mind for transfers, grad transfers and players who just finished their freshmen seasons are the best fits when it comes to admissions. Players who just finished their sophomore and junior seasons are often going to be a hard no. So Murphy's Law would have it that most players showing an interest in transferring to ND this offseason so far are sophomores/juniors and wing players.

The transfer portal is open for players to submit their names until May 11, May 1 for grad transfers, and new players continued to populate the portal. The staff is confident there will be a match eventually and would consider taking two post players if they can find two they like and two who admissions also likes.

For those wondering about 6-5, senior-to-be Nat Marshall, the hope is that with a full summer under strength coach Jarrett Moore and a run of good health can help Marshall transform into a key rotational player next season. Marshall averaged 3.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in just over 10 minutes a game last season.

As far as 2024 recruiting cycle, the Irish remain in play for some of the nation's elite post prospects, but none of them seem to be in a hurry to make a decision.

Sarah Strong, 6-2 F; Sanford (N.C.) Grace Christian: Ranked No. 4 overall in the 2024 ESPNw playing ratings.
Blanca Thomas, 6-5, C; Charlotte (N.C.) Catholic: Ranked No. 9 overall in the 2024 ESPNw player ratings.
Kate Koval, 6-4, C; Glen Head (N.Y.) Long Island Lutheran: Ranked No. 17 overall in the 2024 ESPNw playing ratings.
Kennedy Umeh, 6-3, F; Owings Mills (Md.) McDonogh: Ranked No. 27 overall in the 2024 ESPNw player ratings.

No future recruiting visits have been scheduled, and probably the earliest would be June. The staff will be out and about this month checking out 2024s and 2025s at national events like the Boo Williams Girls Nike Invitational, April 21-23 in Hampton, Va.

BAS: Michigan State outlasts Irish, 7-6, in 11 innings

Brock Vradenburg hit a two-out home run in the top of the 11th inning as Michigan State outlasted host Notre Dame, 7-6, Tuesday night in non-conference college baseball action at Eck Stadium.

Spartan closer Wyatt Rush (2-0) pitched his fourth shutout inning in the bottom of the frame as MSU (19-10) handed the Irish (17-13) their first midweek loss in six games so far this season.

Vradenburg came into the game as the Big Ten’s leader in batting average (.412) and on-base percentage (.504). His homer came off lefty Ryan Lynch, who had escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 10th with an inning-ending double play.

The Spartans outhit the Irish, 14-7.

No. 9 hitter TJ Williams collected three of the seven ND hits, knocking in three runs with a homer and a fourth run with a sacrifice fly. Shortstop Zack Prajzner accounted for the other two RBIs with a two-run homer as one of his two hits.

Right fielder Brooks Coetzee was hit by a pitch for the nation’s-leading 22nd time this season.

Josh Adams joins Clark Lea's Vanderbilt staff

Former Notre Dame RB Josh Adams became the latest former Irish player to join the coaching staff of head coach Clark Lea at Vanderbilt.

Adams joined Vanderbilt this offseason as a offensive quality control coach. Lea, a former Notre Dame linebackers coach and defensive coordinator, has a handful of former Notre Dame players on his staff including linebackers coach/Defensive run game coordinator Nick Lezynski (walk-on QB/CB), defensive analyst Jimmy Thompson (walk-on LB) and defensive graduate assistant Arion Shinaver (walk-on WR).

Basketball WBB: The WNBA Draft is tonight

The WNBA Draft will get underway at 7 p.m. EDT on ESPN. We'll learn tonight if either of Notre Dame's draft-eligible players, guard Dara Mabrey and center Lauren Ebo, get selected.

I found three full WNBA mock drafts from ESPN, SB Nation and Winsidr — places that cover the WNBA with some regularity — and only one has a Notre Dame player being selected among the 36 picks (three rounds of 12). SB Nation has the Dallas Wings picked Mabrey in the third round at No. 31 overall.

Here are those three mock drafts if you're interested. I'll update in this thread if anyone gets selected tonight.

Football Blue Gold-Game will be played April 22

Notre Dame announced the date for this year's Blue-Gold Game: Saturday, April 22.

The spring intrasquad scrimmage will be live streamed exclusively on Peacock. Tickets go on sale Jan. 24 at 10 a.m. EST.

Van Lith /Betts

Interesting they are leaving the cardinals x 2 . Maybe coach Ivey should reach out 2 both . I would like to see them paired with OO livia M . Betts picked Stanford over a list that included the Irish. Betts is one and done in Palo Alto . Notre Dame needs some size inside now that Ebo is gone. The Irish need to hit the portal hard for height inside. Go Irish

Football Notre Dame hires Amir Carlisle as director of player development

Hunter Bivin served as Notre Dame's director of player development from 2019-22 before being promoted to assistant athletic director for alumni engagement this year.

Now Notre Dame appears to have found his replacement in former Notre Dame wide receiver Amir Carlisle. I'm waiting for official confirmation from Notre Dame, but I've heard he's stepped into that role.
