Basketball MBB: Irish putting focus on four-star SG Sir Mohammed

I'm told that Notre Dame men's basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry is in Rock Hill, S.C., today for the Boys Under Armour Association circuit event. Among the recruits he's been able to watch is four-star shooting guard Sir Mohammed.

The new Notre Dame staff re-offered the 2024 recruit earlier this month to continue the interest shown by the previous staff. According to one of Mohammed's coaches, Notre Dame will make an in-home visit with Mohammed on Monday.

Mohammed plays his high school ball for Myers Park in Charlotte, N.C., and he plays for Team Curry on the UAA circuit.

Rivals ranks the 6-foot-6, 200-pound Mohammed as the No. 73 overall prospect in the 2024 class.

In March, Mohammed named a top six of Virginia Tech, Stanford, Penn State, Villanova, Marquette and Oklahoma. Stanford made an in-home visit with Mohammed on Thursday. Virginia Tech is scheduled for one Tuesday.

Softball: Notre Dame set to host ACC Tourney as No. 7 seed

From und.com

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame softball program is set to participate in the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship Tournament this week in South Bend. The Fighting Irish will be hosting the ACC Tournament for the first time in program history. The program has hosted five BIG EAST Conference Tournaments previously, in addition to two NCAA Regionals.

With a 29-16-1 overall record, and an 11-12-1 ACC record, the Irish earned the 7-seed in the upcoming tournament. The Irish will take on the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets in the first round on Wednesday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Irish and Yellowjackets did not meet in 2023, but had one of the more memorable series in 2022, as the Irish took two of three games by scores of 8-9, 13-12 (9 innings) and 15-13 (8 innings).

Florida State is the 2023 ACC Regular Season Champion, finishing the regular season with a 22-2 record in conference play, and going 47-8 overall. Duke, winners nine-straight entering the tournament are the second seed, going 19-5.

Clemson (45-8, 18-6) will matchup with North Carolina (24-26, 13-10) in the first round on Thursday in the 3 vs. 6 seeding. Louisville (33-17, 16-7) and Virginia Tech (36-17, 14-10) rounds out the field in the 4 vs. 5 matchup.

The No. 3 Irish (10-2, 4-2 ACC) took control of the game by scoring on its first nine shots on goal in the first half to create a 10-3 halftime lead. Notre Dame scored more goals in the first half than the No. 17 Tar Heels (7-7, 1-5) had shots on goal (eight).

North Carolina benched starting goalie Collin Krieg after allowing six goals on the first six shots on goal in the first quarter. Notre Dame starting goalie Liam Entenmann saved 11 shots in the victory.

I’m here at Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis for the Prep Ball Stars Midwest Challenge.

Notre Dame men’s basketball 2023 point guard signee Markus Burton from Mishawaka (Ind.) Penn is playing for Team Indiana. He’s suiting up with some of the top talent in Indiana including Michigan State forward signee Xavier Booker from Indianapolis (Ind.) Cathedral, who was one of the candidates Burton beat out for Indiana Mr. Basketball.

They’ll play against Team Wisconsin at noon. If they win, Burton and Team Indiana advance to the championship game against Team Michigan at 5:30 p.m.

I’ll have updates throughout the day.

Basketball WBB: Notre Dame adds forward Becky Obinma, grad transfer from Pepperdine

Notre Dame women's basketball announced Thursday the roster addition of graduate transfer forward Becky Obinma.

The 6-foot-2 Obinma spent two years at TCU prior to transferring to Pepperdine, where she sat out one season and has played in two more. In those two seasons at Pepperdine, Obinna averaged 6.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

This is the one last option @Eric Hansen mentioned in another thread this morning. The Irish will likely be done making portal additions following Obinma.

BAS: NC State limits Irish to one run again, takes series at ND

Notre Dame baseball struggled to produce runs for a second consecutive day in a 6-1 loss to visiting NC State on Saturday.

The Irish, who were limited Friday to one run on six hits in a loss to the Wolfpack, managed just one run on five hits Saturday to lose the home ACC series. Notre Dame won the first game of the series 9-7.

Notre Dame (26-19, 14-13 ACC) scored first Saturday with a solo home run by shortstop Zack Prajzner in the bottom of the first inning.

NC State (31-15, 10-13) wasted little time in responding with three runs in the second inning. ND head coach Shawn Stiffler pulled starter Jackson Dennies, who was returning from injury, after giving up a double with two outs in the inning. Right-handed reliever Caden Spivey then allowed that runner to score on a ground-rule double by Payton Green. Ninth-hitter Kalae Harrison followed the double with a two-run homer.

The Wolfpack added one run each in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings, including a solo home run by Green.

Notre Dame cleanup hitter Jack Penney left three runners on base — a fly ball to end the third inning with two runners in scoring position and a ground ball in the eight inning with a runner on second base.

Dennies allowed two hits and one earned run in 1 2/3 innings after missing the last two weekend series. Spivey (3-1) surrendered seven hits and four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Left-handed Will Mercer kept Notre Dame in the game with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts.

NC State starter Sam Highfilll (5-1) struck out four Irish and gave up one run on three hits in five innings of work. Lefty Dominic Fritton took care of the rest with four scoreless innings.

Notre Dame will host Akron (17-29) for a three-game, non-conference series starting Friday.

Box score: NC State 6, Notre Dame 1

Does Notre Dame underperform or are recruiting rankings inflated for the ND fanbase?

Friends of mine giving me shit constantly about these consistent top ten ratings in recruiting, and clunkers to Marshall, South Florida et. al. seem to be the rule. Inexcusable losses. Constant arguments that ND just gets rated higher in recruiting for being Notre Dame. Is there something to that? Do ND players get a growth stunt due to excessive requirements?

I would be interested to see how many four stars fizzle at ND as opposed to three stars thriving at other places.

Do kids get a bump when they sign with ND?

BAS: NC State evens series with Irish with a 5-1 victory

Matt Willadsen and Baker Nelson quieted the Notre Dame offense, and Jacob Cozart interrupted a pitchers’ duel with an eighth-inning, two-run homer as NC State evened its three-game ACC baseball series with the Irish Friday with a 5-1 victory at Eck Stadium.

The deciding game is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT.

LuJames Groover III drove in three runs for the Wolfpack (30-15, 9-13 ACC) with a first-inning solo home run, an RBI double in the third, and a bases-loaded walk in the ninth,
Right-hander Blake Hely (3-2) pitched into the eighth for the Irish and took the loss.

Vinny Martinez had two hits, including a double, and Estevan Moreno reached base three times with two singles and a walk for the Irish (26-18, 14-12). Carter Putz drove home the only ND run on a groundout.

The Irish walked 12 times and stuck out 12 times.
