Notebook: Sam Hartman can run, but will he for Notre Dame this season?

Really a newsy day today as far as QB stuff goes, and we'll continue to provide you more in the coming days. For me, the most compelling today was how of if they'd use Hartman in the running game, because he's decent (not as good as Buchner in that phase, better than Pyne). Also took at look at how solid Steve Angeli is at No. 2 and how gamepready Gino Guidugli thinks he is. ... How ND goes about this camp and this season gauging whether they need to go back to the portal to add at QB in 2024 ,,. and how much these three QBs hang out with Guidugli and each other.

Recruiting Notre Dame lands commitment from dynamic 2025 four-star RB Justin Thurman

Football Inside QB Sam Hartman's recalibration of his Notre Dame football journey

Inside QB Sam Hartman's recalibration of his Notre Dame football journey

This is from my one-on-one interview with Sam Hartman earlier this summer and one of the most enjoyable for me in my now 40 years in this business. ... There's a lot here that I don't think you'll find anywhere else. He really opened up. Interesting stuff about his reaction to Rees leaving. We got into the old QB1 docuseries ... CJ Carr's reaction to it too. ... And the turning points in his life, which again, he was very open about. It's the most fun I've had putting together a story (and the most caffeine I've ingested doing one) since I came to Inside ND Sports in January of 2022.

Football Quick clips from Notre Dame's practice at Mishawaka High School last night

Notre Dame packed up the squad for practice at Mishawaka High School last night. I heard the police escort for the busses on the way back to Notre Dame going past my apartment after practice last night.

The football program posted some clips from the practice, which included some scrimmage action, on social media. The song playing is actual one of freshman wide receiver Braylon James' songs.

Some things of note from the video:

A Jaden Mickey interception at :12

A Sam Hartman-Tobias Merriweather connection at :16

A Sam Hartman-Gi'Bran Payne connection for what seems to be a TD at :30

Football Quick takes from Notre Dame's ninth preseason practice

Notre Dame football once again practiced on the grass field just outside the Labar Practice Complex on Saturday. On a day in which parents were allowed to attend practice, media members were allowed to observe the first five periods.

It was easily the most entertaining five-period session we've seen so far this preseason.

The first period started with some competitive one-on-one goalline reps with wide receivers and defensive backs. With Sam Hartman throwing the passes, the offense won the battle 4-3.

Head coach Marcus Freeman called out the matchups for the first six reps. Tobias Merriweather got things started with a TD catch against Cam Hart. Then the defense won three consecutive reps with a Benjamin Morrison PBU against Jayden Thomas, a Thomas Harper PBU against Chris Tyree and an incomplete pass to Matt Salerno that he couldn't haul in after getting open against Clarence Lewis. The offense recovered with Rico Flores Jr. beating Jaden Mickey and Jaden Greathouse beating Christian Gray. Greathouse made his win look the easiest by shaking Gray loose on a fade.

With it tied 3-3, Freeman let the offense and defense choose its players for the tiebreaker. Jayden Thomas won with a physical battle with Cam Hart for the touchdown on a back shoulder throw.

The practice then shifted to a special teams focus with open-field tackling drills before a competitive return vs. coverage one-on-one. The drill requires a blocker to retreat and try to cut off the path of the coverage player who is trying to get to a dummy down the field.

When they were split into groups, the most impressive rep came from freshman Cooper Flanagan. He ran over Jaylen Sneed's attempt to block him.

To finish the drill, all three groups came together with special teams coordinator Marty Biagi calling out matchups. The coverage unit, which has an easier task, won four of the five reps. Tobias Merriweather was the only blocker to win and he did so against Harper.

The coverage wins went to Mickey over Flores, Sneed over Drayk Bowen, Adon Shuler over Greathouse and Preston Zinter over Flanagan.

Football “This is the most physical team I’ve been a part of."

I asked Zeke Correll earlier today what he thought of the physicality so far in camp. He was pretty pumped up about what he's seen.

“This is the most physical team I’ve been a part of. It’s been a blast this camp. Very competitive. Our Saturday night practice was probably the most physical, fun practice I’ve ever been a part of. Just guys flying around trying to finish blocks. It’s really competitive. Guys going at it. Just trying to win. Everyone wants to win on this team. We have elite competitors on this team. The competitive nature of this Notre Dame season, this team, it’s been through the roof. It’s great to be a part of. It’s great to see. When it’s fourth quarter and things are getting hard, that’s the team that’s going to come out on top.”

Recruiting New Rivals FutureCast prediction in favor of Notre Dame

Richard Schnyderite, who runs the Penn State, Rutgers and UConn sites for Rivals, submitted a Rivals FutureCast prediction in favor of Notre Dame for 2025 safety target Ethan Long. He did so early Friday morning. Everything he's hearing matches what I've been hearing.

I'm going to go ahead and follow suit on Saturday with a FutureCast for Long to ND. I just wanted to give the subscribers a heads up first. As you may recall, I suggested ND led for Long in my intel report following the Grill & Chill. The four-star safety has visited Notre Dame three times this year already.
