Freeman continues to surprise

I acknowledge some of the frustrations arising from in-game decisions, and a few occasions when the team seemed to lack preparation, but DANG I am proud to have Freeman leading the program.

He’s always lead with his character - which Is often cited by the people who know him - but he is out there KILLIN’ it in recruiting and in the transfer portal, and assistant after after assistant coach joining the program praise him for his vision and leadership. Impressing accomplished guys like Rudolph and Al Golden can’t be easy, and Freeman is just getting started.

So for my part I would really like to see him win it all. It’s a selfish wish for sure, but who would be more deserving of having a NC on his belt than Marcos? Certainly he will have done it the right way.

Basketball WBB: Game Thread | No. 14 Notre Dame 76, Purdue 39 (Final)

The Muffet McGraw has been officially unveiled on Notre Dame's campus. Now the Irish women's basketball team will take the court against an old foe.

No. 14 Notre Dame (7-1) will host in-state Purdue (6-4) in Purcell Pavilion at 12 p.m. EST. McGraw won her first national title at Notre Dame with a 68-66 championship game victory over Purdue in 2001.

The two teams haven't met since a 2017 meeting in South Bend that Notre Dame won in overtime. The Irish have won the last eight matchups between the schools but are trailing 13-14 in the all-time series.

This Purdue team is led by fifth-year guard Abbey Ellis, who's averaging 14.3 points per game. Fifth-year guard Jeanae Terry (5-11) does a little bit of everything as the team leader in rebounds (7.4) and assists (6.3) per game.

Notre Dame's roster remains limited with Olivia Miles, Sonia Citron, Cassandre Prosper and Emma Risch all sidelined with injuries. None of them will play today, but head coach Niele Ivey continues to not share specifics on when exactly any of them will be back.

Notre Dame will likely use a starting five of guards Hannah Hidalgo, Anna DeWolfe and KK Bransford and forwards Maddy Westbeld and Kylee Watson.

Notre Dame 2026 quarterback target Brady Smigiel and his family plan to visit Notre Dame on Jan. 18-21, 2024, which is expected to be Notre Dame's Junior Day weekend. I've directly confirmed Brady's plans with his father, Joe Smigiel. Joe is also Brady's head coach at Newbury Park (Calif.) High.

"We are looking forward to the trip," Joe said in a message to Inside ND Sports on Monday.

Per Rivals, Smigiel is a four-star recruit and the No. 14 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class. He has 21 total offers including Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State and Utah.

Recruiting Why 2024 OT commit Styles Prescod is destined for success at Notre Dame

Notre Dame 2024 offensive tackle commit Styles Prescod is expected to sign with the Irish this week. He plans to enroll in January after finishing up classes early at Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeastern.

Prescod, a 6-foot-6, 265-pound recruit, was recently upgraded to a four-star by Rivals. He's currently the No. 29 offensive tackle in the 2024 class.

The future Irish offensive tackle, who took four game-day visits to Notre Dame this season, has been training with Eze Obiora since his senior season completed. Obiora is the owner of Obiora Rehab and Sports Training and has trained Duke offensive guard Justin Pickett, Miami (Ohio) offensive tackle Ben Decker and Oklahoma offensive guard Caleb Shaffer.

I sat down with Obiora to learn more about his speed and vertical jump training, history with Prescod, what he sees for Prescod in the future and more.

Obiora first discovered Prescod on X/Twitter after COVID-19. Prescod changed positions from defensive lineman to offensive tackle during COVID-19 and Obiora was blown away by his sophomore film.

"He just did one kick step and the suddenness of his movement, and his height, I'm like, 'Oh, this guy is going to be a dog,'" Obiora told Inside ND Sports. "So when he came in, I saw his size and I was shocked. Against my defensive ends, nobody could get around him. I was like, 'You're gonna be a Division I athlete.'"

Last summer, Obiora worked closely with Prescod as he rehabbed following knee surgery. He believes Prescod is mentally tough but admitted these next 3-4 months will be something entirely different.

"High school to college is the biggest jump so it's hard to predict how a kid is going to do in college, especially with the portal," Obiora said. "From what I've seen, he's mentally tough, but this is going to be another test. Right now, he's the biggest. He's one of the biggest things in Indiana. But then when he goes to Notre Dame, everybody was the guy. I'm gonna watch to see how he responds to that."

Obira played at Purdue and Southern Illinois before a career in the CFL and IFL before a brief stint with the Indianapolis Colts in 2016. He said Prescod has the natural tools to develop into an NFL player.

"When you look at the genetic makeup of someone who can go to the NFL, he has it all," Prescod said. "He has all the strength. Some of these tackles are gonna get exposed when they get to college because the recruiters care so much about size that they're not noticing that the guy has really bad feet and they feel like they can coach that."

"Styles' feet are very sudden. It's very rare for someone his size to move like that. I've never trained a tackle that moves like Styles. When it comes to genetic makeup, that boy got it. It's up to him."

Rivals has given Prescod a 5.8 rating, which makes him fall under an All-American Candidate who could have first to third-round NFL Draft potential according to the Rivals recruiting rankings formula.

Recruiting Notre Dame 2024 OG commit Peter Jones ready to start journey

Notre Dame 2024 OG commit Peter Jones is all prepared to sign next week during the Early National Signing Day, which begins on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive guard took some time with me on Friday to discuss his feelings ahead of signing, his senior season, his bond with the coaching staff, Joe Rudolph and more.

"I’m super excited," Jones told Inside ND Sports. "This is [a] dream come true for me and I can’t wait to start this next chapter of my life."

Head coach Marcus Freeman and his staff visited Jones at Malvern (Pa.) Prep on Monday. Jones said the staff laid out a great football development plan but also were easy to talk to about little things like academics, family and life.

"The visit went awesome," Jones said. " couldn’t have asked for anything better. The parts that were my favorite was when the coaches were able to meet my family, coaches, and teachers ... also when they joked about how much food there was."

Jones is the only member of the 2024 offensive line class that committed to the Irish under offensive line coach Harry Hiestand. Jones said his official visit in June was a pivotal point in building his relationship with Rudolph and can't wait to learn under his hands-on approach.

Jones said he's ready to work in Notre Dame's offseason program and do whatever the coaches ask of him. He will be enrolling early in January and participating in Notre Dame's offseason program before spring practice.

"I can’t wait to be on campus, working with the team, and taking classes," Jones said. "It’s always something I’ve been itching to do since I took my first visit so I’m just really excited to finally be able to."

Basketball WBB: Dominant defense leads ND to win on statue day for Muffet McGraw

Niele Ivey wanted Notre Dame to deliver a big win over Purdue for Muffet McGraw on the day her statue was unveiled on campus. The Irish delivered.

"Today is a day to honor one of the greatest coaches of all time, a legendary coach here at Notre Dame, somebody that I adore and is my mentor," Ivey said.

“So to be able to come out and give her a dominant performance was what I really was praying for. … I was just really proud of the group, that we showed up to play and play for her.”
