It sounds like 2025 DE commit Christopher Burgess Jr. struggled a bit taking defensive tackle reps in one-on-one pass rush.

Sources: New college athlete compensation model may cost power schools $300M each over 10 years

The latest from Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports:

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A bag slung over his shoulder and luggage in his hand, Baylor football coach Dave Aranda hustled down the main staircase at the Hyatt Gainey Ranch after the annual Big 12 conference meetings.

He buzzed through the lobby for a quick hello and then jettisoned out the door with a destination in mind. “I’m going to see the (Arizona) Cardinals,” he said, smiling. “Got to learn how to do all this!”

A college coach or administrator visiting a professional sports organization is not necessarily groundbreaking. But Aranda’s visit — presumably to learn more about roster management and pay scale — is indicative of the times.

The college sports industry is moving closer to the inevitable: a direct athlete-compensation model.

As industry executives continue to negotiate with plaintiff lawyers in the House antitrust case, details of a future compensation model — a necessary piece to any settlement agreement — continue to emerge. Those who shared details were granted anonymity as they were not authorized to speak about a proposed settlement that continues to undergo changes.

While negotiations are active and have been for as many as eight months — not a new revelation within the industry — concepts of the proposed new model are becoming more formalized as leaders work to meet a deadline set by attorneys.

Money figures are becoming clear: For those in the power conferences, the price tag is steep.

The 10-year settlement agreement could cost each power school as much as $300 million over the decade, or $30 million a year. That figure assumes a school meets what is believed to be: (1) a $17-22 million revenue distribution cap for athletes; (2) at least $2 million in withheld NCAA distribution for back damages; and (3) as much as $10 million in additional scholarship costs related to an expansion of sport-specific roster sizes — a concept previously unpublicized.

Thor

Gotta love having a player who goes by one name. I hope everyone, including NBC announcers, simply refer to him as Thor.

We need Thor to become a weapon on punt fakes. If the name of our punter can strike a touch of fear into opponents, we will be on to something.

Donate to the Concussion Legacy Foundation’s Race to End CTE in honor of Taylor Dever

The Concussion Legacy Foundation’s 2024 Race to End CTE is quickly approaching. You can donate in support of former Notre Dame players, including offensive lineman Taylor Dever (2007-11).

Following his death in 2020 at the age of 31, Dever was “diagnosed with Stage 2 (of 4) Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) through a clinical diagnosis from researchers at the Veterans Administration-Boston University-Concussion Legacy Foundation Brain Bank.”

Dever finished his career as a two-year starter at right tackle and served as a gameday captain twice in 2011.

The goal is to increase awareness and provide support to the VA-BU-CLF research efforts. Please consider a donation to the Concussion Legacy Foundation (CLF) Race to End CTE in memory of Taylor and to carry on his legacy.

You will be contributing directly to programs to end CTE through prevention and research like:

Stop Hitting Kids in the Head, which aims to prevent CTE in youth sports; the CLF Global Brain Bank, an international network of experts focused on learning how to cure CTE; and the CLF HelpLine, providing 1-on-1 support for patients and caregivers battling suspected CTE.

BAS: Notre Dame survives late scare in 4-3 win at Michigan State

Notre Dame baseball nearly blew a four-run lead in the ninth inning at Michigan State, but the Irish managed to escape East Lansing, Mich., with a 4-3 victory Tuesday night.

Irish closer Nate Hardman was handed a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, and he retired the first batter he faced. But then Hardman allowed a single and a walk before Greg Ziegler hit a home run to left center.

Hardman recovered to force a fly out and ground out to end the game and record his fourth save of the season.

Notre Dame (23-20) built its four-run lead over Michigan State (19-22) with a solo homer by catcher Joey Spence in the third inning and a three-run seventh. First baseman Connor Hincks played shortstop Jack Penney with a groundout. Right fielder TIto Flores knocked in second baseman Estevan Moreno with a sacrifice fly. Then third baseman Simon Baumgardt stole home on a double steal with pinch hitter Brady Gumpf stealing second.

Notre Dame managed only three hits in the game with one each for center fielder TJ Williams (double), Gumpf (single) and Spence (homer).

Four pitchers combined to pitch eight scoreless innings for Notre Dame. Starter DJ Helwig allowed one hit, issued one walk and hit one batter while striking out two in three innings. Caden Spivey pitched two hitless innings with one walk and one strikeout. Will Jacobsen (2-0) retired all six of the batters he faced, struck out one and received the victory. Tim McDonough allowed one hit and struck out one in the eighth.

Notre Dame will host Pittsburgh (18-23, 5-16) for three-game series starting Friday at 6:30 p.m. EDT on ACCNX.

BOX SCORE: Notre Dame 4, Michigan State 3

Recruiting Notre Dame offers 2025 Florida DE commit Jalen Wiggins

I covered Notre Dame's interest in Florida DE commit Jalen Wiggins yesterday in my notes and again in The Heat Index update.

Now Wiggins has reported a Notre Dame offer. Notre Dame visited Wiggins at Tallahassee (Fla.) Rickards last week. The Irish are the first offer Wiggins has reported since he committed to Florida in January.

But Wiggins has been fielding interest from other programs for quite some time. He visited Florida State in March and has official visits scheduled for Stanford (May 31), Florida (June 7) and Florida State (June 21).

That leaves an opening for Notre Dame to try to get the four-star recruit on campus for the June 14th weekend. We'll see what develops in the coming days/weeks.

Rivals ranks Wiggins as a the No. 16 strongside defensive end and No. 241 overall in the 2025 class.
