Football Preseason accolades don't matter to Notre Dame NT Howard Cross III

Notre Dame's defensive line showed its potential last season. Now it needs to keep pushing the standard.

“We can do it, but now you have to show it, and repeatedly show it,” said Howard Cross III.

Football How LB Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is making case to play as freshman at Notre Dame

It's going to be hard to keep freshman linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa off the field. He's already giving Notre Dame's running backs fits as a blitzing pass rusher.

“The guy is just crafty,” said Deland McCullough.

Basketball WBB: Jackie Young, Team USA cruise into gold medal game with 85-64 win over Australia

Former Notre Dame women's basketball star Jackie Young scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field in Team USA's 85-64 semifinal win over Australia at the Paris Olympics.

The win was the 60th consecutive Olympic win for Team USA's women's basketball program. A 61st win on Sunday will give the Americans another gold medal. Team USA awaits the winner of France-Belgium in a game set to tip today at 3 p.m. EDT.

Young, a starter, played just under 20 minutes in the victory. She added five asissts, two steals and two rebounds to her 14 points, which were only behind Breanna Stewart's 16 for a game high.

Young hit double digits for a third consecutive game. She scored a team-high 19 against Germany to finish group play and poured in 15 points in the quarterfinals against Nigeria.

Fellow former Notre Dame player Jewell Loyd scored three points and contributed two assists and two rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench against Australia.

The gold medal game is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. EDT on Sunday.

Football Notebook: Why Tosh Baker is next up at left tackle for Notre Dame

My offensive line notebook on Tosh Baker's move to No. 1 left tackle, why Aamil Wagner is staying at right tackle, the left guard competition and the emergence of freshman Anthonie Knapp.

"I’ve got no doubt about his ability to step in there and do a great job," Joe Rudolph said of Baker.

USC's starting left tackle ...

Remember Elijah Paige? The former Notre Dame commit is set to become USC's starting left tackle as a redshirt freshman. A video of him towering over others went viral this week.

Paige hasn't accomplished much yet, but a reminder of one of the things that led to Notre Dame's current situation at left tackle.

Bob Beaman..............

..................it's still hard to fathom beating the long jump record by nearly 2 feet in 1968. Of all Olympic moments, this one ranks right up there with the 1980 US hockey team. The record was so badly beaten, the in-place measuring equipment was inadequate to measure what he'd done (they had to get a tape measure).

T&F: Notre Dame grad Yared Nuguse earns bronze in 1,500-meter final at Paris Olympics

As expected, Notre Dame graduate Yared Nuguse will compete in the 1,500-meter final on the track in the Paris Olympics.

Nuguse won his semifinal Sunday with a time of 3 minutes and 31.72 seconds. He was just ahead of fellow American Hobbs Kessler at 3:31.97.

Nuguse's time was the best of the two semifinals. Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the other semifinal with a 3:32.38 time.

The men's 1,500m final is scheduled for Tuesday at 2:50 p.m. EDT

UPDATE: Nuguse finished third to win a bronze medal in Tuesday's 1500-meter final. USA's Cole Hocker won gold with an Olympic record time of three minutes and 27.65 seconds. Great Britain's Josh Kerr finished just ahead of Nuguse for silver. Kerr's time was 3:27.29. Nuguse's 3:27.80 is a personal best.

US Women's Soccer

The United States women's soccer team plays Germany at 12pm today. Early in pool play these two teams played and US won 4-1. Do not be fooled by a 4-1 score. Soccer is so comparable to playing chess. Each match is different and each team can win.
I have watched all the US games and Japan and Australia used the best strategy. Play with 5 players in the box defending the goal and taking their chances on offense when possible. US beat Japan because of the skill of Tiffany Rodman. Then again i have said the US best players were Tiffany Rodman and Sophia Smith. Thats why teams pack the box. They are really fast and skilled with the ball.
In any case the game should be good.
