Recruiting Rivals recruiting intel: The latest on Auburn, Ole Miss working to flip QB Deuce Knight

For those holding out hope that QB Deuce Knight is going to remain committed to Notre Dame, disappointment may be around the corner.

Here's the latest from @samspiegelman after seeing him play last night.

Knight wore both Auburn and Ole Miss towels at some point.

Also threads the plan to get TE Mitchell Evans back up to speed, head coach Marcus Freeman's pregame emotional intentionality and Jordan Botelho making strong play for player of the week honors.

Coach Freeman

Was awesome in this game. I wondered two years ago that he seemed to have a bit of a deer-in-headlights look on the road when the breaks started beating the boys. Even last year at times too. Maybe that was due to limited tv shots of the sidelines, as Eric fairly pointed out when I asked about this.

But man, talk about a leader now! He was awesome pregame and during the game (and after). I don’t want to name names, but in the past we have had some coaches who seem cerebrally less gifted than Marcus (one of whom had a soft spot for the Aggies, the other likes to golf, and another was the worst D coordinator in the history of the sport). It is very good to have someone running the operation who is quick on the uptake, as Rockne would have phrased it.

USC LSU & ND

From what I saw last night, SC/LSU are both insanely talented: passing offenses were off the charts, and defenses looked formidable. I doubted the SC defensive revival, but it clearly looks as though the new DC is delivering. LSU lost the game but looked much stronger defensively.

2024 ND vs. SC matchup potentially now shaping up as a playoff battle. Fun to watch 2 young highly talented coaches: Riley the QB whisperer and MF bringing his outlier defenses.

Two Plays

In thinking back on the game, there were two plays in the fourth that really could have changed the outcome (or at least changed ND’s path to victory) had they gone differently. The third down with 7 min left when A&M’s Moss looked like he could have pretty easily stuck the ball out to get the first down when he ran out of bounds short of the marker. Then, a couple of minutes later when Collins made the great catch on the sideline. First, I’m still not sure he ever had possession with a foot down inbounds and second, shoving the defender in the back after the play was over easily could have been a costly 15. I know we could play this game with all sorts of plays (including the first down that should have been) but ND was fortunate on those two plays late.

Football Transcript: Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman opens Northern Illinois week

Here's a transcript from Marcus Freeman's press conference earlier today.

Eric - was Mike Berardino at the South Bend Tribune

When you worked there? Gave the defense a grade of a B. Not sure what you have to do to get an A-, but holding a top 25 team under 250 yards and creating two turnovers seems like it probably merits at least that.

Football Score prediction thread: Notre Dame-Texas A&M

Rather than wait until Friday morning, let's open this thread up before I hit the road tomorrow.

@Eric Hansen and I will share our predictions in this week's Place Your Bets video, which will post Friday morning. I'll circle back with those scores when it's published.

A lot has changed since the early prediction thread at the start of August. What say you now?

Anybody else going to College Station?

Going to my first Notre Dame game anywhere other than ND Stadium since 9/9/95 at Purdue.

My wife has a former co-worker who has moved back to College Station and has invited us to stay with them and use two of their four season tickets.

Flying on Southwest from Chicago-Midway to Houston-Hobby, but had to take the 6:40am Friday flight to get the best price.

Forecast high of 95 degrees with sunset not until an hour after kickoff has me wondering if this was a good idea.
