Recruiting Update: Four-star DE Jerod Smith commits to Michigan

Four-star defensive end Jerod Smith, a 2024 recruit, plans to announce his commitment tomorrow. Smith has visited Notre Dame three times with his twin brother, Jacob. Both have expressed a desire to play together in college, but they're not planning to make their commitment announcements together.

It seems like one visit to Michigan may have been enough for Jerod Smith. Our Michigan site believes he will pick the Wolverines, and I tend to agree.

Notre Dame's juggling a lot of defensive line possibilities beyond commitments from four-star DT Owen Wafle and three-star OLB Cole Mullins (who ND has recruited as a DE).

Notable remaining targets:
Five-star DT Justin Scott
Four-star DE Elijah Rushing
Four-star DE Benedict Umeh (also a potential DT)
Four-star DE Loghan Thomas
Four-star DE Mylachi Williams
Four-star DE Marquise Lightfoot (outside chance)
Four-star OLB Bryce Young (recruited as a DE)
Three-star DE Anelu Lafaele

I feel great about ND's chances with Young. Cautiously optimistic on Scott.

Basketball MBB: Irish send out five offers, including in-state 2025 five-star Jalen Haralson

Notre Dame men's basketball and head coach Micah Shrewsberry have been busy on the recruiting trail this week. After the first Nike EYBL session last weekend, the Irish offered four players including two in-state 2025 prospects who rank inside the top 40 of their recruiting class.

Haralson reported an Irish offer Wednesday evening. The 6-foot-7, 205-pound shooting guard attends Fishers (Ind.) High. As a sophomore, he averaged 23.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. He broke the school record for most points in a single season with 514 total points.

He participated in the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Minicamp March 29-April 2.

He is a five-star recruit and ranked No. 9 in the 2025 recruiting class. He holds nine offers including Notre Dame, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue. He plays on the Nike EYBL circuit with the Indy Heat Gym Rats.

Sundra does not hold a Rivals rating or ranking. He reports 15 total offers including Butler, Iowa, Miami (FL), Seton Hall and Virginia Tech. He took an official visit to Butler last November.

Basketball MBB: 2025 PF target Malachi Moreno talks recent offer, Micah Shrewsberry

I caught up with 2025 four-star power forward Malachi Moreno Wednesday evening after he landed an offer from Notre Dame men’s basketball earlier tonight.

The 6-foot-11, 210-pound power forward attends Georgetown (KY) Great Crossing High School and plays on the 3SSB circuit with Indiana Elite, the same program 2023 guard commit Braeden Shrewsberry played with last spring and summer.

Moreno said he received a text after school from his AAU head coach, Mike Fox, saying Notre Dame would like to call him when he got home.

“I felt great after hearing them say I was getting a scholarship,” Moreno told Inside ND Sports. “I truly felt blessed.”

Moreno said he and his mother met head coach Micah Shrewsberry on the travel circuit last year and built a connection while he was at Penn State. Moreno also crossed paths with Braeden through Indiana Elite and said he enjoyed his time around him.

“We had created such a bond throughout the summer last year and we became good buddies,” Moreno said. “I think it would be awesome to play with him in the future. He is an elite shooter so I know he would be able to help me out.”

As a sophomore, Moreno averaged 14.8 points, 11.2 rebounds and just under five blocks per game. He said he can play in the post, defend, and shoot from the 3-point line.

“I think I can bring a lot of versatility to a college program,” Moreno said “I just love being out there and having fun. I love winning with my buddies.”

Moreno is rated as a four-star prospect in the 2025 class and is ranked No. 62 in the class. He holds nine offers including Notre Dame, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio State, Purdue and Tennessee.

He told me academics, relationship with coaches and the overlook of the entire campus will be the biggest factors in his recruitment.

Basketball Update | MBB: Purdue G Brandon Newman commits to Western Kentucky

Here's a story from our friends at Boiler Upload on Purdue senior guard Brandon Newman entering the transfer portal.

Given that Newman is from northern Indiana (Valparaiso) and Micah Shrewsberry was on Purdue's staff for Newman's first two seasons at Purdue, this is a name to monitor:

Recruiting Logged a Notre Dame FutureCast prediction for another 2024 WR target

As you may know by now, I logged yesterday Notre Dame FutureCast predictions for 2024 WR target Micah Gilbert and 2024 DE target Bryce Young.

This afternoon, I went ahead and logged a RivalsCast prediction for Notre Dame to land 2024 WR target Isiah Canion. The Irish have been the favorite since deciding to offer on his visit in March. His return for the Blue-Gold Game only cemented that.

Recruiting Fans make Notre Dame visit special experience for 2025 WR Taz Williams Jr.

“I didn’t know their fans were that crazy over recruits and players,” Taz Williams Jr. said of his Notre Dame visit. “When I was there, I had a lot of people stop me to take pictures and give autographs out. I was like, 'Wow, I didn't know the fans were this crazy.' I really can see myself being here."

BAS: Notre Dame suffers letdown loss at Michigan State

Two days after Notre Dame completed a three-game sweep of No. 8 Virginia, the Irish allowed Michigan State to sweep its season series with ND.

The home Spartans beat Notre Dame on Tuesday by a 12-5 margin after winning in 11 innings at Notre Dame on April 11.

Notre Dame (23-16) squandered a three-run lead to start the game and a two-run rally to tie the game in the sixth inning with a disastrous seventh inning.

With the game tied at five in the bottom of the seventh, Notre Dame reliever Matt Bedford allowed the first two batters to reach base with a walk and a single. Righty Ryan Lynch replaced Bedford and struck out the first hitter he faced. But then Lynch walked the next batter to the load the bases. A Lynch wild pitch allowed Michigan State to score the go-head run.

Michigan State's runs kept coming with Jack Frank's two-run single. A two-run triple by Casey Mayes knocked Lynch out of the game. Sammy Cooper allowed an RBI single to the first batter he faced, Sam Thompson. He recovered to force a pair of fly outs to end the inning, but the Spartans had already taken an 11-5 lead.

Michigan State added a 12th run in the bottom of the eighth with a bases-loaded, RBI fielders' choice by Greg Ziegler.

Two of Notre Dame's three runs in the first inning came unearned after first baseman Carter Putz started the scoring with an RBI double. Putz later scored on a fielding error by starting pitcher Robert Klann. Second baseman Estevan Moreno plated third baseman Jack Penney with an RBI fielder's choice.

The game-tying runs in the sixth came courtesy of an RBI triple by left fielder DM Jefferson and an RBI sacrifice fly by right fielder Brady Gumpf to score Jefferson.

Each of Notre Dame's first four pitchers Tuesday allowed at least two earned runs. Starter David Lally Jr. lasted 1 2/3 innings while allowing three hits, three walks and two earned runs. Right-handed Ricky Reeth allowed four walks, two wild pitches and three earned runs on one hit. Bedford was saddled with the loss for allowing two earned runs in the seventh. Lynch recorded just one out while allowing four earned runs, three hits, two wild pitches and one walk.

Michigan State's decision to pull Klann in the first inning paid off nicely. Reliever Harrison Cook went 4 1/3 scoreless innings as Michigan State took its first lead. After Gavin Sitarz allowed Notre Dame to tie the game, Andrew Carson escaped with no runs allowed despite recording as many walks (three) as outs. Wyatt Rush took the win with three scoreless innings to end the game.

Notre Dame (11-10 ACC) will resume conference play Friday with a three-game weekend series at home against Florida State (14-25, 5-16 ACC) and former coach Link Jarrett.

Recruiting Intel: Where Notre Dame stands with 2024 targets who recently visited

As @Charleston Bowles and I continue to interview some of the recruits who visited Notre Dame for the Blue-Gold Game, I’ve been doing some more digging to get a better sense for where the Irish stand with the 2024 targets who visited in the past week or so.

Let’s look at it position-by-position.

Wide receiver

Notre Dame may be closing in on two more commitments at wide receiver to join Rivals100 commit Cam Williams. As I’ve shared in other threads, I’m predicting Notre Dame will add four-star WR Micah Gilbert and three-star WR Isiah Canion to its class at some point. We know Gilbert’s commitment date is next Tuesday, May 2. Canion hasn’t revealed any plans yet, but as long as it doesn’t drag out beyond a couple weeks, I think he’ll pick ND.

The question would then become, does Notre Dame want to take four wide receivers in the class? I believe they should, but I don’t think that’s been settled on yet. The Irish are in a good spot with four-star WR Jason Robinson, who also visited last week. I would consider him the favorite to be the fourth in the class if ND makes room.

Recruiting Trail Tracks coming soon

I'm told that Notre Dame's coaching staff will be on the recruiting trail starting Thursday for the evaluation period that runs through May 31. The Irish staff will be able to stop by schools to get a better sense for targets in prospects in various classes. We'll bring back our Trail Tracks series to monitor where Notre Dame's staff is visiting.

The NCAA definition of the evaluation period is "a period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to be involved in off-campus activities designed to assess the academic qualifications and playing ability of prospective student-athletes. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts shall be made with the prospective student-athlete during an evaluation period."
