BAS: Link Jarrett and Seminoles take down Irish, 3-2

It’s been anything but a magical season for former Notre Dame coach Link Jarrett since taking over the baseball program at alma mater Florida State this season.
In his first trip back to South Bend, Ind., he recaptured a little of it Friday night against his former team.

Doug Kirkland pitched 2 ⅓ innings of hitless relief as the ACC’s losingest team held on for a 3-2 victory at Eck Stadium in the first of a three-game ACC series.
It was the second win in a row for the Seminoles (15-25, 6-16 ACC) after they won just two of their previous 24 games.

Freshman second baseman Estevan Moreno, one of the few players in Friday night’s game who didn’t play for Jarrett, accounted for all of the offense for the Irish (23-17, 11-11) with an RBI single and a solo home run.

Shortstop Zack Prajzner also had two hits for Notre Dame, which stranded nine runners.

Grad senior lefty Aidan Tyrell (7-2) took the loss on the mound in his second start of the season. He moved into the weekend starting rotation when sophomore lefty ace Jack Findlay recently underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Tyrell gave up five hits and three runs in seven innings, while walking four and striking out three.

Game 2 of the series Saturday has been moved up from 4 p.m. to noon EDT to try to avoid rain later in the day.

Recruiting Three-star S Kennedy Urlacher puts ND in top six, sets commitment date

Three-star safety Kennedy Urlacher, a 2024 recruit, announced Friday a top six of TCU, Penn State, Notre Dame, Miami, Kansas State and Illinois.

Urlacher, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Chicago Bear Brian Urlacher, visited Notre Dame in April. He also visited TCU, Miami and Kansas State this spring.

Urlacher told me he plans to announce his commitment decision on Monday at 6 p.m. EDT.

I've gone ahead and entered a Rivals FutureCast prediction for Notre Dame in Urlacher's recruitment.

Should there be a minor/developmental league?

It has become clear that there are probably 10 or so teams whose boosters are willing to pay high school kids hundreds of thousands if not millions to come to their schools. Bama, OSU, A&M etc. Should those "schools" be segregated?

In the next few years it is going to become absolutely pointless to play paid semi-pro players. I can't wait to see how the Bama's et. al distance themselves in the near future recruiting wise with the NIL. The talent disparity is going to become comical.

Basketball MBB: 2024 PG target Trent Perry discusses recent offer, skillset

I spoke with 2024 four-star point guard target Trent Perry Thursday afternoon. Perry reported an offer from the Irish Tuesday. He attends Los Angeles (Calif.) Harvard Westlake and plays for the Vegas Elite Basketball Club on the Nike EYBL circuit.

Perry said he developed a prior relationship with Irish associate head coach Kyle Getter during his tenure at Virginia. Getter and head coach Micah Shrewsberry watched Perry in the first session of the Nike EYBL in Atlanta last weekend.

“My first impression is that he is a down-to-earth family man,” Perry said of Shrewsberry. “When I talked to him for the very first time I felt comfortable exchanging conversation. I believe that he cares for his players and wants them to succeed.”

In his sophomore season, Perry helped Harvard Westlake win the CIF Open Division state championship in March. He finished the season averaging 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists per game. He was also named Mission League Most Valuable Player.

“I do everything on the floor,” Perry said. “Assist, score, rebound, guard the best player … I just want to win. I am a vocal leader and try to communicate with my guys to make sure we’re all on the same page.”

The 6-foot-4, 175-pound point guard is rated as a four-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class. He is ranked No. 74 overall in the class.

Perry holds 12 total offers including Notre Dame, Colorado, Oklahoma, Stanford, UCLA and Vanderbilt. He said academics, interactions with coaches on and off the court and early playing opportunities will be the most important factors in his recruitment.
