HKY: Notre Dame opens its season with a home split with Clarkson

From Sunday's 3-0 victory over Clarkson ... from und.com ....

GOALS

  • Irish freshman forward Maddox Fleming carried the puck along the boards into the Irish zone before sending the puck around the back of the net to Jayden Davis who beat his defender to the puck. Davis then fired a no-look shot on net, beating the Golden Knights netminder for the go-ahead tally at 4:21 of the second period. It was the first collegiate point of both Davis and Fleming’s careers with the Irish.
  • After peppering the Clarkson net through the first minute of the third period, the Golden Knights attempted to clear the puck but Grant Silianoff blocked out the rush and kept the puck onside for the Irish. Skating it in, Silianoff fed a pass over to Danny Nelson who was posted up at the back door for the tap in goal. The tally gave the Irish the 2-0 lead at 1:13 of the final period and was the first career goal for D. Nelson.
  • Landon Slaggert net his second of the weekend to round out the Irish scoring Sunday night, on the powerplay. The elder Slaggert dished the puck up to Trevor Janicke along the boards who quickly centered it where L. Slaggert fired a shot home. Paul Fischer set up the initial play and was credited with a second assist on the goal for his first career point.
KEY STATS

  • Three Irish found twine Sunday night as the Irish defeated the Golden Knights, 3-0, to split the season opening series.
  • With the first two goals coming off the sticks of freshmen, four newcomers tallied first career points in the win. Jayden Davis and Danny Nelson each tallied their first career goals while Maddox Fleming and Paul Fischer earned assists Sunday night.
  • For the second consecutive night, the Irish outshot the Golden Knights, boasting a 24-22 edge over the visiting team.
  • Ryan Bischel posted his first shutout of the season, and eighth of his career, with the 3-0 win.
  • D. Nelson led the team in shots on goal Sunday, firing five pucks on net for a weekend total of 11. The freshman forward also led the team in blocked shots with three.
  • L. Slaggert’s powerplay goal in the third period was his second tally in as many games.
UP NEXT
The Irish travel to Rochester, New York, for a one-game series at RIT. Puck drop against the Tigers is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, on FloHockey.tv.

Compete for a National Title?

Does anyone else feel that this is the best team to compete for a National Title since the 90's? Granted we made the playoffs and played for a National Title in 2012 but we knew the other teams were superior to ND. With no real dominate team I truly feel ND can compete for a National Title this year. I know we lost to Ohio St. but I know we can beat them. If we can run the gauntlet of the remaining schedule (which I know won't be easy) but if we could, I would think we have every right to make the playoffs and have as good a chance as anyone to win it. Just curious what others are thinking

ND Offense’s Line Implosion, Depleted Receivers Group, and Ineffective Playcalling.

Why don’t our analysts want to admit just how poor out offensiv line has been all year. Can’t effectively pick up a blitz, can’t run block well enough to pick up third and 1 or 2 yards to convert and backs can’t even get back to line is scrimmage frequently, and can’t effectively give our quarterback time to throw the ball. Our receiver group is not deep enough to compete with any really good team and run poor routes. and seem to never come back to help the quarterback find any of them when they can’t get open soon enough. Play calling is not creative and does not use enough mid- direction to help the quarterback and running backs. And , for additional comment, why can’t the coaching staff teach our defensive linemen to raise thei arms to disrupt the passing lanes of opposing quarterbacks and maybe deflect more passes?

Football Five defining plays from Notre Dame's implosion at Louisville

I identified these five plays as the ones that best defined Notre Dame's loss at Louisville:

1. Sam Hartman’s first interception
2. Ashton Gillotte’s sack of Sam Hartman
3. Notre Dame’s fumbled third-and-1 handoff
4. Jawhar Jordan’s first touchdown run
5. Marist Liufau’s facemask penalty

What did I miss?

Recruiting Remote updates on Notre Dame commits and targets in Friday's HSFB action (with highlights)

While I’m covering 2024 offensive tackle Styles Prescod on Friday night at Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeastern in a separate thread, I wanted to create this thread that is focused on keeping up with the other commits in Notre Dame's 2024 and 2025 recruiting classes on Friday evening.

I won’t be tuned in as much as I normally would to their progress during the games but will work to bring any updates I can find from X (Twitter). Inside ND Sports plans to do a deeper dive into their performances later Friday evening and into Saturday as stats become available and players update their Hudl highlights.

Look for this thread to start rolling around 7 p.m. ET when most players kickoff. 2024 wide receiver commit Logan Saldate and 2024 linebacker commit Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa will start their games a little bit later around 10 p.m. or 10:30 p.m. ET.

I'll also monitor 2025 targets like four-star wide receiver Talyn Taylor, three-star linebacker Dominik Hulak and four-star cornerback Mark Zackery and bring any updates from their performances.

Football Notre Dame falls out of Super 16 poll, slides to No. 21 in AP, Coaches polls

Irish are tied with UCLA as the unranked teams receiving the most votes, so technically 17th. My ballot is at the bottom of this post. I formulate a Top 25 out of habit, though only the top 16 count in this poll. Coaches and AP polls still to come.

Recruiting Two 2025 four-star offensive targets set visits for Saturday against USC

On Sunday morning, Inside ND Sports confirmed that Notre Dame 2025 running back target James Simon and 2025 wide receiver target Koby Howard each plan to visit campus for its game against USC on Saturday.

Both are rated as four-star prospects by Rivals. Simon is out of Shreveport (La.) Calvary Baptist Academy while Howard attends Davie (Fa.) Western.

Simon, the No. 27 running back in the 2025 class, told me in August he was a fan of running backs coach Deland McCullough. This will be his first visit to campus since receiving his offer in March. He holds 18 total offers including Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU and Texas.

Howard visited Notre Dame in the summer of 2022 and received an offer from wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey shortly thereafter. This will be his first visit to Notre Dame since then. Howard reports 30 total offers including Auburn, Florida State, Miami (Fla.), Tennessee and UCF.

We will continue updating the running visitors list thread as more visitors set visit plans for Notre Dame’s remaining home games.

Liufau Facemask Penalty

First of all, it's a dumb play by Liufau. Secondly, the refs didn't cost ND the game and Louisville deserved to win.

HOWEVER:

Liufau is clearly being dragged down by a blocker as he grabs that face mask. To call one penalty but not the other is inexcusable. Just another example of the clear incompetence of the ACC officials. This was a critical call as Louisville went on to score a TD to go up 11 as opposed to kicking a FG to go up 7 (or maybe even missing the FG). Completely changes how the rest of the game plays out.

Take a deep breath

After having a good night’s sleep and reflecting on the game, I think we all need to take a deep breath and appreciate what we have in ND football right now. Yes, we lost the game, a game we legitimately should have won. But stop and think about that. At any point in the BK era did we really have the better team in these kinds of matchups? Hell no. We didn’t match up athletically and he coached not to lose. The only big game won during the BK era was the OU game on the road. Now, in just the 2nd year of Freeman, we EXPECTED to win this game and we matched up much better athletically. His first recruiting class had a really high blue chip ratio, and Greathouse, Flores, Love are all playing big minutes in key roles. VERY different from BK. Hartman is here, and he points directly to Freeman as a big part of choosing ND over Alabama and others. We don’t win that sweepstakes under Kelly. We have two top 10 QBs in upcoming classes in CJ Carr and Deuce Knight, and we kept CJ after Tommy Rees left for Bama because of the relationship with Freeman and others.

We’re better than we have been in a LONG time offensively, defensively, on the recruiting trail, and the results on the field are showing it too. BK loses this game by 21 easy. Remember all of those big games? Remember the disappointment and the athletic difference, particularly at WR and DB? Wasn’t there last night and OSU has studs on both sides. We were man for man with them and there wasn’t a skill/talent gap. The recruiting classes are ramping up (although I still worry about the DL).

We WILL win games like this moving forward. The coaching staff will clean up their mistakes (and they were epic mistakes) which is something I like about Freeman. The players will learn from this about finishing, just like they learned not to overlook opponents last year after what happened with Marshall and Stanford. I like our chances against USC especially after watching USC-ASU last night after the ND game. We will play more disciplined moving forward, and these guys don’t make the same mistakes twice.

It’s all still to play for this year - we can still make the playoff despite this loss. For the first time in a big game in a LONG time we were the superior team. We lost by and inch at the last second DESPITE making all of those mistakes. Eliminate any one (int drops, too soft coverages at end, 10 men on the last two plays, etc) and we win easily. Kick the damn field goal on the first drive and we win by a TD at least. We are a MUCH better team than we were two years ago and I like the trajectory we’re on. Chin up, deep breaths, and GO IRISH!☘️☘️☘️
