End of Redshirting?

Makes me wonder, is there a point to red-shirting certain positions like QB, RB, WR, CB, S?

I think teams are just gonna have to play Freshmen, have them be specialized players that can contribute in a very specific way even though he may not have a complete grasp of the system.

The transfer portal/Free Agency makes it very easy to ditch their current teams if they’re not getting playing time. What’s the point of red shirting certain positions?

Football On freshman WR KK Smith

Given the disintegrating wide receiver depth chart, I reached out to look into KK Smith's status. The freshman wide receiver has been out since the preseason recovering for a shoulder surgery.

I'm told he's been catching passes for weeks and it should only be a matter of time until he's fully cleared to participate. That would put him on track to be available for the bowl game.

Hopefully we'll get a chance to ask Marcus Freeman's thoughts on it Sunday.

HKY: Notre Dame hockey routs No. 13 Michigan for Jeff Jackson's 400th win

The Notre Dame hockey team gave coach Jeff Jackson his 400th win as ND's head coach on Friday night and with very few anxious moments.

Landon Slaggert scored two goals, his 11th and 12th of the season, and Ryan Bischel made 28 saves as the Irish routed No. 13 Michigan, 6-1, in the first of the two-game series at Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend, Ind. The two teams meet again Saturday night at 6 EST.

Notre Dame stays near the top of the Big Ten standings (4-1-2) with 15 points, tied with Wisconsin and behind Michigan State. The Irish are 8-5-2 overall.

Michigan (7-7-3, 2-5-1) tied the game at 1-1 in the first period on a power-play conversion, but Justin Janicke untied it and the Irish stayed on a roll, outshooting the Wolverines, 38-28.
Patrick Moynihan, Tyler Carpenter and Danny Nelson also scored goals for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame had once been pushing for Scott but after hosting him in March, the Irish failed to get him on an official visit over the summer while he took trips to Georgia, Miami (Fla.), Ohio State and Michigan. Five-star recruit out of Chicago (Ill.) St. Ignatius College Prep that 2024 commits CJ Carr and Cam Williams built friendships with and made recruiting pitches to on social media.

DC/Defense compared to OC/Offense

It appears that Freeman expects the O to follow a similar trajectory from this year to next year as the D's from last year to this year. Interesting logic. There is no comparison between the knowledge and experience of the DC and the OC. That difference seems to me to be the whole point. Freeman, a great D coach, went out and got a great DC. On the other hand, he fumbled the OC search and then hired an OC with virtually no experience and no coaching tree to indicate that he had any special knowledge of offensive football. And he expects him to perform as Al Golden has? That's not wishful thinking. It's obtuse.

Freeman is acting way too much like Riley did with his DC. The problem is that he is a head coach and will be evaluated by the team's win/loss record, not the D's.

BTW, he was much more careful hiring a new STC, than OC. Inexplicable.

Portal Defections

I am curious if these receivers are jumping ship because stuckey is gone, or they don’t see enough future playing time. I am really surprised at Tyree leaving with a year remaining and Flores with all the playing time he has had this season. The portal and NIL are going to ruin the game and many mid-level teams that can’t compete with the BIG BOY TEAMS. Go Irish

OT: Staff changes for Clark Lea at Vanderbilt

I can't find which thread it was in, but someone shared a report that appeared dubious to me about Clark Lea getting fired at Vanderbilt.

The official news today is that Lea has fired his offensive coordinator and will be taking over the defensive coordinator role as well.

"Offensive coordinator Joey Lynch will not return to the program. In addition, Lea will take over the duties of defensive coordinator.

Nick Howell will remain on staff as an assistant coach in the secondary. Dan Jackson will transition to an off-field role and Jamaal Richardson has been promoted to assistant coach, joining Howell in coaching the defensive backs."

On Friday afternoon, Notre Dame beat out Louisville, Florida State, Michigan, Tennessee, USC and Wisconsin for 2025 four-star safety Ivan Tayor. The Winter Garden (Fla.) West Orange recruit is the son of former former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Ike Taylor.

Story includes quotes from Taylor and Rivals National Recruiting Analyst @John Garcia Jr.

"Strong instincts pair well with plus athleticism and ball skills to suggest he could make an instant impact early in his collegiate career.”

Football Notre Dame parting ways with WRs coach Chansi Stuckey

Wow. We just finished recording our podcast to see the news reported by John Brice of FootballScoop that Notre Dame is parting ways with WRs coach Chansi Stuckey.

Very odd timing with Marcus Freeman's comments yesterday. We're working to confirm this report now.

Update: A source has confirmed this report with @Eric Hansen.

Updated with a statement from Marcus Freeman:

“First of all, I want to thank Chansi for all of the work he put into our program,” Freeman said. “ I wish Chansi and his family all the best.

Over the past few days, we had continued discussions on the overall performance of our wide receiver group and my expectations for the development of that position. I decided it was in the program’s best interest to part ways.”

Football Postseason Roundup: Cam Hart, Marist Liufau accept Senior Bowl invites

Does It Seem

Like ND is a powder keg about to explode? With the transfer portal, both coming and going, recruiting, both keeping what we have committed and who we are going after, coaches, both the ones we have the ones we don't have, it all seems like a somewhat unstable situation. This time of year now is the most stressful on a program when it comes down to the signing day, keeping the kids that are committed, sorting through the portal and upgrading the coaching to find the secret sauce on all to mesh. Should be an interesting 45 days really.
