BAS: Irish sweep Tennessee Tech with more power, another comeback

The Notre Dame baseball team will roll into its home opener Tuesday against Purdue with plenty of lingering questions about its starting pitching.
And lots to feel good about just about everything else in its first 10 games of the season — all on the road — including its power bats and relief pitching.

The Irish got both in heavy doses Sunday in sweeping a three-game series with host Tennessee Tech with a 14-11 come-from-WAY-behind victory in Cookeville, Tenn.

Notre Dame (8-2) smashed five more home runs Sunday, giving the Irish 29 through 10 games — way ahead of a pace to obliterate the single-season school record of 79, with admittedly better pitching ahead in most of its remaining 45 regular-season games.

Shortstop Jack Penney’s second long ball of the game and fourth of the season, with football linebacker/pinch-runner Drayk Bowen aboard, tied the game at 11-11 in the top of the seventh after Notre Dame had trailed 9-2 after one inning.

Penney drove in three runs on the day and scored three.

Third baseman Simon Baumgardt, a grad transfer from Tulane, then put the Irish ahead for good with an RBI double in the eighth. Brady Gumpf’s pinch-hit two-run homer later in the frame gave the Irish a three-run cushion.

Baumgardt reached base five times against Tennessee Tech (6-5), with two doubles among his three hits. He walked twice, scored twice and drove in two runs.

First baseman Connor Hincks, and DH and UCLA grad transfer Josh Hahn also homered for Notre Dame.

Irish starting pitcher Caden Spivey was pulled without recording an out in the first inning, and was charged with nine earned runs on five hits and three walks and a hit batsman.

But the Irish bullpen responded with just one earned run on two hits over nine innings among five relief pitchers. Freshman right-hander Keenan Mork got the win with two hitless/scoreless innings, in the seventh and eighth.

Evansville grad transfer Nick Hardman followed with a hitless/scoreless ninth for his third save in an Irish uniform.

The Irish face Purdue (8-3) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., with actual baseball weather in the forecast (high of 73 degrees).

Basketball MBB: Game Thread | Notre Dame 69, Clemson 62 (Final)

Notre Dame men's basketball (11-17, 6-11 ACC) will close out its home slate for the 2023-24 season against Clemson (20-8, 10-7 ACC) on Saturday.

This is the first and only game of the season between the two. The Irish have won four of their last five while the Tigers have won six of their last seven, with their only loss coming by a final score of 78-77 to NC State.

Freshman point guard Markus Burton, who averages a team-high 17.2 points per game, is expected to serve as the primary scorer for ND's offense. Burton scored a career-high 31 points in Tuesday's win vs. Wake Forest. Freshman guard Braeden Shrewsberry is averaging 10 points per game. Braeden, Micah's son, has scored at least 10 points in five of the last six games.

As a team, ND is shooting 40% from the field, 31% from the 3-point line and 74% from the the free-throw line. Notre Dame's team average of 63.4 points per game ranks No. 345 (out of 351) in Division I this season, but the Irish have scored 70 points or eclipsed that number in each of their last three contests.

ND is holding its opponents to 65.6 points per game, which is just under 13 points less than Clemson's average of 78.4 points per game.

The Tigers are led offensively by PJ Hall, Joseph Girard III and Chase Hunter. The trio have started all 28 games, and Hall leads the crew at 18.5 points per game. Girard, who was contacted by Micah Shrewsberry last spring when he entered the transfer portal, is putting up 15.8 points per game and shooting 43% from the 3-point line. He's also a 95% free-throw shooter.

ND Women's Softball

I was following a little today the ND softball games against Virginia Tech and the Irish were dominated. In fact i went back and looked at their past wins and losses and it seems they struggle against the better teams they have played. Today they lost both games and were run ruled in second game and gave up 9 runs in both games. Softball is usually dominated by teams because of pitching. I thought ND would be better because of the grad transfer pitcher from the Ivy League. Does not look look good for the irish. In softball, couple good pitchers can take you a long way.
In its history has ND softball ever been to the World Series? I know the coach has been at ND a long time. I could not find where they have won the ACC either. I know the ACC has really good softball but to give up 9 runs in both games today sure does not look good.

BAS: Notre Dame's bats rescue Jackson Dennies' day on the mound with 15-11 win

Notre Dame baseball trailed by at least four runs though each of the first four innings Saturday at Tennessee Tech. But the Irish offense bailed out a shaky start from the pitching staff to pick up a 15-11 victory and clinch a series win after two games.

The Irish (7-2) trailed 4-0 after the first inning, 9-3 after the second inning and 11-7 after the fourth inning. But Notre Dame scored at least three runs in four separate innings to outscore Tennessee Tech (6-4).

Second baseman Estevan Moreno, the No. 8 hitter in the Irish lineup, hit three home runs and knocked in six runs to give Notre Dame a lift.

Leadoff hitter Jack Penney, a junior shortstop, finished 3-for-6 at the plate with a two-run homer, two doubles and three runs scored.

Right fielder Tito Flores went 1-for-6 but still recorded three RBIs. He plated one run in the fifth inning with a ground ball to the shortstop that knocked in center fielder TJ Williams and Penney followed him in on a throwing error. Penney and Williams scored again in the seventh on a Flores single.

Williams, Notre Dame’s No. 9 hitter, reached base all five times he took the batter’s box. He started with an RBI single in the second, then reached twice from getting hit by pitches, once on a walk and a final time with another single.

Notre Dame starting pitcher Jackson Dennies, a senior right-hander, allowed eight earned runs on 10 hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. He allowed a pair of home runs and one double with two strikeouts and one walk and threw 51 pitches.

Sophomore righty Rory Fox (1-0) replaced Dennies in the second inning and ended up picking up the victory. He walked three, struck out four and allowed one hit and two runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Junior righty Ricky Reeth pitched four scoreless inning with four strikeouts and only two hits. Evansville grad transfer Nate Hardman closed the game out with an 11-pitch ninth inning.

The Irish and Golden Eagles will take the diamond Sunday at 2 p.m. EST.

BAS: Notre Dame flexes its power again with six HRs in routing Tennessee Tech

Notre Dame’s early-season power surge continued Friday in Cookeville, Tenn., as sixth Irish players hit home runs and the Irish overwhelmed host Tennessee Tech, 14-3, Friday in college baseball.

Heading into Saturday’s second game of the three-game series Saturday at 3 p.m., EDT, the Irish (6-2) have amassed 20 homers in their first eight games. Going into Friday’s college action only seven of the 292 Division I teams nationally had reached the 20-home run plateau.

Grad transfer Simon Baumgardt’s two-run homer in the first inning helped Notre Dame to an early 3-0 lead after the opening frame. Jack Penney, Connor Hincks, Brady Gumph, Josh Hahn and TJ Williams also flashed their home run power.

The Irish extended the lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth on solo shots from Gumph and Williams. Tennessee Tech (6-3) closed to within 5-3 in the bottom of the frame on a three-run homer by Nicho Jordan off Radek Birkholz.

But Davidson grad transfer Bennett Flynn came in to slam the door with three hitless innings pitched and seven strikeouts, and the ND offense tacked on four more runs in the eighth and five in the ninth.

Hincks was 2-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Penney drove in three, and Williams, ND’s leading hitter (.467), went 2-for-5 with three runs scored.

Matt Bedford went the first three innings, and allowed a hit and a walk but no runs. Birkholz (2-0) got the win, pitching the middle three innings, and Flynn picked up his second save in an Irish uniform.
