Deserving or Best?

Well I was exaggerating a bit, in my fulminations, about the relevance of the regular season if you don't have conference auto-bids. But in a sense it's true. It is a free for all at that point, which I thought is what we we're trying to avert. And I'm with you, conference expansion has been a monstrosity, quite manifestly. But I guess that's on account of better TV revenue, and that's like a whole 'nother matter altogether. Bottom line, if we're going to have at large bids, following the model of March Madness, then of course they have to be merit based, whatever that means exactly. And I'm sure there's enough latitude implicit in that guiding principle, to satisfy the SEC. 9-3 just wasn't good enough this year! Even if Bama is probably 'better' than SMU.
I think as long as there is an UNWIELDY NUMBER of teams -- ALL THEORETICALLY EQUALLY ELIGIBLE TO QUALIFY -- though VASTLY DIFFERENT AT TIMES in terms of whom they play -- it will be difficult to eliminate the subjective element entirely, so that the argument between whose "better" vs. whose more "deserving" will remain a flashpoint.

But then, many see that sort of debate as just as much a part of the appeal of college football as the actual competition itself. It certainly keeps a lot of telecasters, broadcasters and podcasters jabbering. Message board posters -- and I'm SELF-INCRIMINATING HERE -- as well.

Props to the Crowd Last Night!!

Lots of people (including many on this board) claim Notre Dame isn't a loud or intimidating place to play. That sure wasn't the case last night. The Stadium was rocking and loud all night long. I didn't attend the game in person, but I was messaging with 2 friends who were there and they told me the place was absolutely electric the whole game. Maybe the cold weather got everyone full of a couple of shots of Jameson before the game!

Before the game Coach Cignetti predicted on Gameday that the crowd might be 25% IU fans. I was happy to see that prediction was way off. There was some red, but not the sea of red we saw in past years for Nebraska and UGA. ND fans showed up and were vocal and loud.

And it was a chicken skin moment for me to hear what sounded like the whole stadium singing the National Anthem before the game. Even the Gameday crew commented on it. That was awesome and reminded me of what CFB is all about.
Yes, we were all singing the Anthem, and the place was absolutely electric. ⚡️ One of the best ND games I've been to.

Not sure if anyone else caught it on TV, but at one point late in the game we were chanting Hoosier Daddy!! 😂

If Tenn played in the SEC…

Osu is gelling when they lost their last regular season game? Not to say that they can’t win it, they can. But this sounds a lot like when that ahole saban was talking about how his team transformed over the season when they needed a miracle Hail Mary to beat a 6-6 team that lost to n Mexico st the week before. Again, osu is good enough to win it, but unless it only takes one game to gel and peak, they’re not carrying a winning streak into the playoffs. W/ all that said, they’re dangerous.

Ohio State is loaded. If they don't win it will be because of Day.

They are damn good.

I didn't think any team stood out...till now.

If they play to potential...and yes, I agree about Day...I don't see anybody stopping them.

I really think they're the next evolutionary step in college football. They are really leveraging NIL. They can probably get a younger Belichick...maybe Day senses that!

:D

Ohio State just might be jelling and peaking at the right time. That happens in many sports in playoffs...teams often start to turn it on from some choppiness during regular season.

If you made me bet my bet worth...it would be on the Buckeyes right now.

I take back everything I said...

You don't like any coaches, do you? I guess he is kind of on the hot seat, which is weird, given how successful he is. But he has a chance to redeem himself. If they beat Oregon and move on to the semis, that's got to buy him a little time.

It's not about liking, but rather about being elite. By consistently challenging and perhaps winning a NC. Day challenges, but comes up short.

I'm also just echoing what I hear from many Buckeye fans, as I have cousins who live in Ohio. They feel he has all the resources and talent. But you are right, he has a chance to redeem himself...a relative concept for such a strong program like Ohio State, but it shows where they care culturally in wanting to be #1.

After 2nite, they are my favorite. Day has an axe to grind. His team too. That roster is stacked.

Henderson. Smith. That QB looked good too. Monster D.

Deserving or Best?

What a bunch of bullshit. Does that mean Tennessee shouldn’t have been in either? They got their asses kicked but no one will say a word about them cuz they’re from the beloved SEC. Tennessee ole miss lsu are all mediocre teams that SEC teams get credit for playing and/or beating. Put smu against Tennessee and it’s a toss up at best for tennessse. The getting down on your knees for the SEC is getting ridiculous.

Way to many negative plays

I hear you but he stepped into a throw with pressure and delivered a strike to Faison for a big play to pretty much seal the game last night. Of course this is just one play but still.

You mentioned missing open receivers, but doesn’t every QB do this? I think if ND had the OL from last year, and LSU’s receivers from last year, they would be a lot more successful throwing the ball i.e. it’s a team game.
You make it sound like the game was in question. 😂 A completion didn't seal this game The defense sealed it with their dominant performance. IU had zero answers on offense because the ND defense shut them down period. The game was never in doubt.

As I stated in another comment, I was at the game and we could literally call the open receiver where RL was hesitant to throw to him or didn't see him until 2-3 after we saw it, and it wasn't just once, it was happening the entire game.

Deserving or Best?

I BROADLY AGREE that merit is the way to go.

And since CONFERENCES EXIST a system of SUBDIVIDING PERFORMANCE is already in place, i.e. a means by which MERIT CAN BE MEASURED. Plus, conferences are part of the LORE OF THE GAME, even though they've been RECONSTRUCTED rather SLOPPILY.

The trouble is, it's impossible to create out of conferences as they now exist the kind of COHESIVE and EQUITABLE scheduling that exists in virtually all PROFESSIONAL SPORTS. There's neither enough PARITY within CFB conferences as respects scheduling nor, more glaringly, AMONG CONFERENCES. So, we get the kind of mismatches in these early playoff rounds that we're watching.

But whilie I'm for maintaining conferences, I'm also for realigning them MORE EQUITABLY. And that might include dividing them into STANDARD AND PREMIUM DIVISIONS where LIKES COMPETE AGAINST LIKES on a regular basis.

The trouble with disbanding them and merely 'SELECTING' the best 12 or 16 teams is that no matter how much that process may be QUANTIFIED, the SUBJECTIVE ELEMENT remains at the heart of it which -- as you've pointed out -- leads back to the very thing that playoffs are meant to abolish -- the concept of a MYTHICAL CHAMPION.

I take back everything I said...

12 is clearly too many..6 teams end the debate

Why? You'd seriously prefer those 6 teams to play in 100% meaningless bowl games than be a part of a playoff? Do you want to see the NCAA Basketball tournament cut in half? Or more?

Anyway, what's funny is that every higher seeded team won comfortably in the first round, and every lower seeded team could very well win in the 2nd round.

I take back everything I said...

Guys, Ohio State sure seems to be the real deal.

They just might be peaking at the right time.

They don't seem to have a weakness...except, maybe, that Day isn't elite...burden of proof is on him to prove it.
