How many more times...

do we have to hear or read about "Notre Dame is going to have to take some shots down the field " ? Talking heads and many here having been claiming that for 14 games. ND hater Trevor Matich was bemoaning that again this morning. I swear many don't even watch the games. They just look at the numbers and draw conclusions. They've played the same all season. Protect the football, move the sticks and grind it out. The short passing game is effective when needed. Great defense and amazing the difference a healthy quality kicker makes.
I've been saying for weeks the defense is going to carry this team as far as it can, and the offense needs to do just enough enough to win games.

Let's be realistic. The offense scored 1 TD yesterday, and that was off a turnover deep in Georgia territory. The offense did enough to get into FG range for Jeter to get it done.

The defense is going to have to continue to play extremely well, force turnovers to give the offense higher probabilities of scoring. This offense has yet to prove it can drive the field against a good defense similar to Georgia.

Yes, the biggest bust ND had on defense yesterday was the wheel route to Jones for the TD. PSU runs more wheel concepts than anyone I have watched in recent memory. Andy K’s offense is way too cute and gadgety for my taste, but finding and exploiting matchups against LBs and safeties is one of the his staples. ND’s aggressiveness and man/cover 1 base is probably the exact matchup they are looking to go against from a scheme perspective. Allar’s ability to scramble and improvise is something to watch as well with all the man coverage Golden runs.
we did a lot of spying on stockton and the rbs well at times last night. We had one really bad series with like 3 or 4 busted plays. No clue what was going on. Georgia didn't do anything fancy.

But yes, our Lbs will have to cover swing passes really well

Bowen had a bust on the TD pass. Warren will be a nightmare.
We were lazy in coverage at times against their TEs, and georgia really does have a good group. Warren if you don't lose him shouldn't get much YAC, he just makes tough catches. But PSU constantly tries to scheme him to get him open in space and their RBs. They really believe in passes to their rbs, warren, and a few deep shots (to evans).

ND rushing attack

You probably are right. But what's scary is Ohio State seems to be imposing in all dimensions...although I fancy then ND D can stop them.

1st thing, ND has to beat Penn State. Then that hypothetical against the best offense I've yet seen in college football...as Ohio State seems, making me think of Carroll's Trojans.

I think ND will run better vs Penn State, who I don't believe is as good as Georgia.
Yeah, if Ohio St doesn't turn the ball over they are going to be very difficult to beat. That said at this point you just line up and have at it. Regardless what happens going forward this season has been very enjoyable and the future is extremely bright. The culture Freeman has established along with many others in a relatively short time is outstanding. Guys like Chad Bowden and his group deserve just as much credit as the players and coaching staff. Chad is every bit as valuable as anyone there. He and Freeman together will continue to be a force going forward.

Nasty,
Plenty of time between now and the Penn St game to fret over matchups and schemes. Today we celebrate a great Irish victory and the outstanding play of our defense and special teams. We will need to be better against PSU in several areas, but linebacker play is among my least concerns.
Nope. 24 hour rule isn't in play here since the game got delayed 19 hours ha. Celebration was for last night, back to work analyzing next opponent today! :)

Freeman shatters BK glass ceiling

Kelly is gone ………… get over it
Get over what? You can't mention Marcus Freeman & ND breaking a glass ceiling and a 31 year Major Bowl streak without mentioning Brian Kelly. Brian Kelly hired Marcus Freeman and brought him to ND as his DC for crissakes.

I am not a Kelly basher, Kelly took ND a long way from the Charlie Weis, 3-9-7-6,6-6 days, and I give him credit for that. But, he basically gave up on getting ND to point where they could do what they did yesterday. He felt LSU would provide him a better and easier opportunity to win a National Championship. So far, it has not worked out, and Marcus Freeman proved ND had more meat on the bone.

Officially Official Sugar Bowl ND v. UGA Game Thread

Our dline played solid, they played FAR from lights out. Golden had so many well timed run blitzes called and the LBs, and safeties did unreal against the run. Yes the Dline made some huge plays against their awful LT. I'm not saying our front 4 played bad, but to say our front 4 was stuffing them is just untrue.

The Adon Shuler blitz might’ve just been the Defensive call/play of the year to me.

ND rushing attack

It's one of the best running games in the country. It's the playoff you're not gonna see the same big numbers in these games. Most teams not likely to even hit their averages. The defenses are too good. It's how it should be in a playoff format.

Lets talk PSU

OK, I'm finally coming down off my drunken high from last night. lol. What a performance by our defense!

If I may, lets talk PSU. I have the not so distinct pleasure of living in State College and I work for the university. I guess I have quite a bit of insight on Penn State.

Offense:

The main guy they have to account for is their stud, first rounder of a tight end, Tyler Warren. He's big, tough and catches everything they throw at him. They use him in multiple roles and packages, and have quite a bit of success getting him in good matchups. He's a problem for our defense and we'll need to find ways to take him away. But he's going to get his catches and yards.

Keytron Allen, their RB, is solid. I would venture to say he's very similar to Love. Tough inside runner with speed on the edges.

Drew Allar, the QB. He very much impresses me. He's been around a while, has plenty of experience and spreads the ball around. This season he's done a good job of protecting the football and making good decisions. He is not a great runner and has had issues with pressure.

Their WR corp is pretty pedestrian. They do enough, but no one really stands out. If we can take away Tyler Warren, those guys will need to step up for them.

Defense:

They're solid across the board, but their front 4 is very good. They, like us, like to mix up pressure schemes. Abdul Carter... he's a stud DE. He'll be an issue to keep out of our backfield. They're secondary is an issue and has been all season. We need to find a passing game real quick to take advantage of this.

Coaching:

Well, lets just say that the natives in Happy Valley are restless and have been for quite some time with Franklin. He has struggled to win the big games (where does that sound familiar?). This staff I don't find as inept, they have fielded competitive teams for a while, but Ohio State and Michigan has had their number.

Overall:

PSU is a lot like Georgia I feel with the exception of having a QB that can throw the football well. They rely on their defense quite a bit and they've been good all year with exception of the Big Ten title game where they gave up a lot of points to Oregon. There is no quit in them, they play to the bell as we saw in that game, even though they came up short.

If Golden can figure out ways to shut down their TE and force them to other recievers, this will be another defensive slugfest as I don't think PSU's recievers are good enough to do a lot of damage against our secondary. I see no reason why we won't shut down their running game.

Offensively... well, we're going to have to play better than we did against Georgia and be able to throw the ball. They have a good pass rush, so I'd expect a lot of short passes and screens to try to slow them down and keep Leonard upright.

At this point, this is going to be very tough game since we'll be playing a team that is not handicapped by QB play like UGA was.

My initial thoughts... ND 31 PSU 28

Oh and one other note. I'm absolutely ecstatic to be playing Penn State for more reasons than one. Probably my greatest ND memory of all time was the Snow Bowl in 92. I was a kid and it was my first trip ever to South Bend for the game. Our seats were in the endzone right where it all went down in the blinding snow. Mirer to Brooks! I remember it was snowing so hard that PSU, in all white, you could not see them when they were at mid field.
