Basketball MBB: Game Thread | North Carolina 74, Notre Dame 73 (Final)

Notre Dame men's basketball is about to take the court for its first game of 2025.

The Irish are hosting North Carolina with both teams in the middle of underwhelming seasons. Notre Dame can blame the injury of point guard Markus Burton for that. But Burton went through warmups and may play today.

The Tar Heels (8-6, 1-1 ACC) started the season ranked No. 9 in the AP Poll but have the same number of losses as Notre Dame (7-6, 1-1 ACC).

UNC is led by veteran guard RJ Davis, who is averaging 18.4 points per game.

Notre Dame's starting five: guards Julian Roper II, Matt Allocco and Braeden Shrewsberry and forwards Tae Davis and Kebba Njie.

Can we talk about the effin refs?

It doesn’t matter if the ball hits the defender before or at the same time as contact with the offensive player.

If the defender plays the player and never looks for the ball, it’s pass interference even though the ball hits the defender in the back

I guess for you, ignorance is bliss

Read the rule

So if there’s a safety running around who gets hit with an errant pass, but then moments later bumps into an eligible receiver, that’s pass interference to you? 😂

Announcers

Just rewatching this, it really was worse than I remembered.

The sideline interference was “do they really need to call that”.

The first PI was “He had his hand on the shoulder pad that’s PI”

Then on the face mask “you can call that, you don’t have to but you can”

The PI on GA on that same drive. 2nd and 7 with the defender holding the ND guys arm was “that just aggressive coverage”.

What a bunch of tools
I agree 100%. This sec bias is out of control

Freeman shatters BK glass ceiling

You are just a guy who has lost the debate, so you have to resort to a childish temper tantrum. Two things can be true at the same time, I agree that Brian Kelly restored ND to a Top 5-10 program, I agree he did bring Marcus Freeman to ND and handed him a program in good shape, So you can stop making lazy straw man arguments.

There are levels to this thing, and anyone with a shred of common sense or intellectual honesty knows Brian Kelly flamed out badly in the post season. I broke down each of the 4 games for you and the results, Which you of course ignored, because it demolished your entire argument, Which was frankly very, very easy to do.

There are 4 levels of team performance above what Brian Kelly did at ND, and Marcus Freeman has already moved ND past 2 of the levels
Get to the post season and look like you belong. CHECK
Get to the post season and win games CHECK
Get ot the post season and win a National Championship TBD
Win multiple National Championships TBD

Again, the only reason I brought up Kelly's name was to illustrate how Marcus Freeman has moved the program past anything BK ever did at ND. If you feel the need to defend Kelly, go to the LSU fan sites and defend him. Because he is being attacked relentlessly by pissed off LSU fans

100% correct.

BK reached his ceiling, becoming stagnant. He evolved to some extent. Learned to smash mouth a bit more, but still tended to go gimmick all too often...in his coaching DNA and, consequently, a bit of a softness.

He also was stubborn, doubling down with comments absolving himself of responsibility. I remain grateful for him an continue to wish him well. He was exactly what a floundering ND needed...but never ideal and I never really like him much as a persona.

My guess is he can't see what he is doing wrong. MF in contrast seems to self evaluate and adjust. Fast. Major difference, with a lot of runway to keep proving himself vs a BK career that I think has run its course.

Officially Official Sugar Bowl ND v. UGA Game Thread

I rarely chime in on these "debates". Georgia: 62 yards rushing.....10 in the first half with 3 points. 52 in the second half. One would think that their massive O line would have wore ND down in the second half to some degree. This was a stellar, elite defensive performance against the centerpiece of the SEC. What more can you ask of this defense, especially given the major depletion on the defensive side of the ball. Defensively.....this team is coached up and stepped up in a way that you don't see very often.

I also marvel at this. The GA OL is big, strong, and good. Big weight advantage vs the ND DL.

But the ND DL indeed held. Even thrived. I go back to athleticism, speed, and leverage often can overcome some size and weight advantage.

The ND D is for real. Depth. And as you said, a fighting spirit and grit to complement talent, which I haven't seen since the Holtz days.

Does This Short Week Hurt the Irish?

13 point win is not a tossup. I was just applying your logic, not mine. I don't give a crap about the spread. They don't decide games. Another example of worrying about circumstances you can't control.

So are you saying you can speak for Freeman's prefences?
Tossup before the game smart guy. And yes it was a tossup game. 1.5 point spread. So is PSU. You are using hindsight

Yes. Are you saying you would turn down an extra day or 2 of rest for Love,Cross, KVA, Spindler and Schrauth ? Let's see how honest you are here

If you had the option, you could have 6 days between games or 8. Are you going to try to say that you or MF would say nah I'd rather my guys not have the extra couple days to try and get to 100 percent

Any sane person could obviously see that. It's as obvious as can be

Lets talk PSU

Every game a HS coach in Texas, who is a big PSU fan, does a breakdown on one aspect of the most recent game. Here is his analysis of the PSU running game vs Boise State and why it worked so well. This guy does a really nice job, and I thought some here may enjoy watching and learning a bit about your next opponent.

I watched a bit of the video, and I could easily see all three of the nice little run plays PSU worked successfully vs Boise in rather textbook fashion getting blown up by ND's defense. So seeing it slo mo and having at all diagrammed out was almost therapeutic. We ain't no Boise St., that shit won't work against ND.

But thanks for the link.
