Basketball MBB: Defense disappears for Notre Dame MBB in home loss to Elon

Elon got comfortable in Purcell Pavilion on Friday night. That led to an upset victory over previously undefeated Notre Dame.

“On the defensive end, that’s not how we play defense,” said Irish center Kebba Njie. “That’s not what I feel like Coach Shrews (Micah Shrewsberry) built this program to be about. I think offensively, we played pretty well, but there’s a lot of our defense that didn’t show up really too much tonight.”

We got tools to answer this question. That's why F+ and other advanced ranking systems exist.

Despite the head to head loss Texas has done more vs their schedule than Georgia has vs theirs which is why F+ has them rated higher.

Texas has 11 five star players on their 85 man roster to NDs 1 five star player.

Texas is the #2 team in F+ through week 12 to NDs #8 F+ rank. Texas has the #1 defense to NDs #3 defense (but they also have a top 10 offense as well)

Am I the only person on this forum who gets really fed up with people doubling down/ arguing in the face of ever mounting evidence against their point of view? Only to return weeks later (after the evidence/data is proven correct) to continue to argue in the face of the evidence again and again and again (even with the benefit of hindsight)?

At what point does your desire for reality kick in and become more important than your ego?
You forgot one thing, I don't give a shit about F+. I think it's an embarrassment to ranking systems

I stopped reading when you used that as an example

Williams can’t even sniff the field yet at the easiest position to play … that’s not me writing him off, but I’m also realistic that the odds are against him if you can’t even get on the field with not great wr play

Bettis isn’t playing wr at any point

All of our wrs are rated 5.6 or 5.7… thats the worst in the last 30 years I’ve been following

Odds are that only one makes any form of impact at the position
A lot of our top wrs didn't play or do much as freshman. He's way too talented to give up on. I won't be surprised if he is starting or our big play wr next year

I thought the same about Bettis before his senior year. Now I won't be surprised if he gets some run as an older player at ND

I don't care what Burress is rated. Although 247 now rates him in their top 247. I just watch the film and he could play. Don't care his ranking

If we only have 1 guy that impacts the position, okay. It's not the end of the world

I don't mind spending money on transfers that are proven vs some high school kid who hasn't played a down of college football. I feel like we should be able to find decent wide receivers in the portal more worried about defensive tackle recruiting those big boys are hard to find.
The problem is that there's very little upside/star players to be had in the transfer portal. Minus few exceptions, all of the upside is in highly rated HS prospects who haven't been evaluated/discarded by another FBS program.

We all want to guarantee a return on our investment with the least amount of risk possible .. but that comes at the cost of little to no upside on the roster.

ND needs to embrace the risk and have way more risk tolerance as it relates to their talent acquisition strategy/roster building.
