Seasons Over Play Angeli

I don't think you can play Carr in this situation. WTF has he done to earn that? Angeli has certainly paid his dues, and did very well in his lone start, and is probably a better bet to win games in the here and now. And what about Minchey, wtf has he ever done to simply be leapfrogged by a true frosh? That's a complete insult to the team, and the other two QBs. Starting a true frosh by virtue of the fact that he has the highest theoretical upside in a season that was supposed to be and still could be a playoff run. That's a luxury reserved for complete rebuilding seasons.

If RL isn't getting the job done, you replace him with whoever among the other three who can get you wins now. Unless the season completely collapses and we're 2-4. Then who the hell cares what you do. And that presumably would be Angeli. And then you have an open QB competition next spring. Unless Angeli is utterly lights out, like for instance running the table and winning a playoff game.
The coaching staff already insulted the other QB’s By bringing in Leonard in the first place. They had no prob leapfrogging them.

“Angeli paid his dues” this isn’t UPS, there’s not a seniority list.

I’ll say this loud and clear ND is completely and totally ELIMINATED from the playoff. I’d put in a 4 loss SEC team before I’d put in ND with a MAC loss.

Post game presser.

Denbrock had the Heisman-winning QB and two 1st round picks at WR last year. Maybe he needs the right QB for his system for it to work well.

But like I've said, I actually preferred Parker's offense, because he emphasized the run more.

Last year, in our 56-23 win over Stanford (Parker's last game), we ran 47 times for 381 yds and only threw 15 passes. The RBs ran 43 times.

Yesterday, we ran 28 times for 123 yds and threw 32 passes. The RBs ran 17 times. Leonard had 11 runs for 16 yards, including sacks.

But clearly Denbrock's offense is disjointed right now.
I think you may have hit on it. Denbrock's offense may not be suited to ND's offensive personnel. Riley may not be a good enough passer, though if you watch his junior year highlight reel at Duke he was throwing downfield bombs with precision accuracy. Why not now?

I see Angeli, though not as athletically gifted as Leonard, as possessing more FINESSE and a variety of different skills. He's accurate, moves in the pocket well, throws well on the run and can run effectively WHEN NECESSARY. These were all things, BY THE WAY, Joe Montana did well.

I might be disappointed, but I'd really like to see Angeli get some series.

Denbrock

And as far as our WRs go, this is with a pretty damn good haul of portal additions. And they immediately move to the top of the depth chart, as well as a lacrosse player who walks on and is basically our best WR as a true frosh off the bat.

So our WR situation is not good. And this includes our not yet signed current recruiting class, which is totally underwhelming thus far. I sincerely hoped/believed we could run the table or go 11-1 and make the playoff. And that little vision seemingly has been shattered to pieces by week two, and the ugly reality of our offense is stark for all to see. But maybe we will go on a run just the same.

No offense to Angeli, but don't you think if Aneli was that good, ND never would have recruited RL? When I first heard the news of RL being recruited to ND, it frustrated me, because it obviously meant there was no QB on the roster that the staff thought they could win with. Blame recruiting, lack of talent, coaching, development, whatever. ND really screwed themselves w/ the QB problem they have now.
I'm calling into question the coaching staffs evaluation of QB's. I believe they have shiny object syndrome. Look at the recruitment of each Riley Leonard and Steve Angeli. Coming out of HS, Angeli was rated higher than Leonard, had better offers from major schools over Leonard.
Angeli, in the limited time he's seen the field has produced.
77% completion percentage, 7 TD's, 1 INT, 96.4 QBR, 11.5 yards per pass, 3.4 yards per carry.

I believe Freeman was afraid to give an inexperienced QB the nod and went with a more experienced QB. I also believe that was a mistake. You don't know what you have until you throw them in live action.

Perhaps the booing started here...

That's why I said to zoom to the 1:07:20 mark. The relevant section is only a minute or two long.

Synopsis, someone who was sitting behind the ND bench said some players were interacting with the crowd. When the crowd told the players to focus on the game, the response was F-bombs and the bird.

Well, not cool of course. But kids can be kids. More so when things are not going well. Not surprising.

This is coaching and culture. Reinforcing that something is not right.

Again, I believe the margins are small...a matter of coaching would see ND beat teams like NI easily enough, consistently. With the requisite discipline, preparation, and play calling.

Post game presser.

As far as I can tell, Freeman's an establish the run coach. He comes from the Jim Tressel coaching tree. And last year's offense seemed to reflect that. In the Sun Bowl, we ran the ball 48 times and only threw it 19 times. Against Stanford, it was 47 rushes and 15 passes. We did more passing in some of the other games, but it was clear running the ball was a priority. But then he brought in Denbrock and appears to have given him free reign to do whatever he wants, because the run-first mentality of last year seems to have gone away. We'll see how things progress going forward.

ND for structural reasons alone will struggle being a happy pass team. As discussed, ND just doesn't get great QBs and enough offensive skills receiving players. Usually a good OL, backs, and TEs...so smash mouth seems the natural and smart choice, run 1st, with some mixing up to keep defenses honest.

Yesterday boggled my mind.

Play Carr, highest ceiling of the group, swing for the fences

Leonard's career average per pass is 7 yards. Anyone who watched him at Duke would know this.

Angeli in his limited play is averaging 11.5 yards per pass.

The staff has shiny object syndrome. They bought into all the Riley Leonard hype instead of looking at what you have and developing it.
The book on Leonard is to make him pass to beat you. He seemingly can't. In any event, in this day and age, you can't even beat a MAC team with a good rushing offense and a passing game that consists of screens and swing passes with the occasional 5 yard pass to the TE or slot on a stick route in the middle. Defenses have it easy if they only have to defend 12 yards vertically.
