Basketball MBB: Game Thread | Elon 84, Notre Dame 77 (Final)

Time to find out if Notre Dame men's basketball will "play like their hair's on fire," as head coach Micah Shrewsberry promised after Monday's 75-58 win over North Dakota. Shrewsberry didn't like the energy his team played with that led to North Dakota grabbing 14 offensive rebounds.

The Irish (4-0) will host Elon (2-2) at 7:30 p.m. EST in Purcell Pavilion.

Elon has victories over Northern Illinois (75-48) and Bluefield (103-66) and losses to North Carolina (90-76) and Gardner-Webb (80-79).

Elon is coached by former Notre Dame player (1991-95) and assistant coach (1998-99) Billy Taylor. The former Lehigh and Ball State head coach took over the Elon program in 2022.

Elon is a good rebounding team, so Shrewsberry's promise will be tested. The Phoenix is ranked No. 19 in Division I in defensive rebounds per game (31.25) and No. 95 in offensive rebounds per game (12.75). The 44 rebounds per game are tied for 20th nationally.

Matthew Van Komen, a 7-foot-4 center, leads Elon in rebounding with eight per game. Sam Sherry, a 6-11 forward, averages seven rebounds per game.

Twin brothers TJ and TK Simpkins lead the Elon offensive attack as guards. TJ, a sophomore who plays off the bench, is averaging a team-high 17 points per game. TK, a junior starter, is averaging 16 points.

Notre Dame will stick with its typical starting lineup: guards Markus Burton, Braeden Shrewsberry and Matt Allocco and forwards Tae Davis and Kebba Njie.

Williams is the most talented wr on the roster

With the 7 guys we have coming back plus transfers and the freshman, we'll be fine

Faison Greathouse Smith and maybe Thomas and Colzie coming back are 5 guys who have played in this rotation. Add some good transfers no reason to think we won't be okay

And we don't need either Richardson or Bettis to play at all next year. They will most likely redshirt. Thats for the future
I agree…we’ll be Okay. But I think you’ll agree that this group lags in comparison to the potential we have at literally every other skill position.

Fighting Kelly’s of LSU

I think they should fire BK at this point. He can take his 60 million buyout, on top of the 30 million he's already earned, and retire, and sit on his pile of money, of 'generational wealth'. Thanks to ND fans, LSU fans have become equally bonkers and almost violently agitated over a three game losing streak. And they can replace their hated 'yankee' coach with someone hailing from south of the Mason Dixon line. Personally, I thought he was doing great. He took a legit dumpster fire program in total disarray, that he inherited from cajun favorite son Ed O., and had them in the SECCG first season. Recruited and developed a Heisman winner, who's probably even better than their beloved Joe Burrow. And was 6-1 this season before an improbable 2nd half comeback loss to A&M, and now the wheels have fallen off a bit, but it's not that god-awful of a crisis, and they stand at 6-4. And of course the bigger blow, losing BU. To a massive NIL deal that LSU wasn't able/going to match, that had absolutely nothing to do with BK himself. But he is the coach, so he does have to bear the blame anyway. He was not able to somehow save the situation, with some last minute in home visit or something. So that's his fault too.

So they should fire him. And just eat the money. And they learned their lesson. Don't hire BK!
If BK wanted him bad enough he could have matched Michigan's offer by donating 1 year of his salary to the LSU NIL collective . If winning a national championship is that important to BK what's a measley 10 million for the 100 million dollar man?

Nah, reacting to your opinion that we’ll be fine with having one of Bettis or Richardson be solid, etc…. In combination with an unknown transfer. I agree that Burress is much better than generally thought, but I think we need a couple outstanding receivers to get this team to the next level. I agree we have some talent and some very solid receivers, but we don’t have those difference makers. If our goal is to make the playoffs and seriously compete for national championships, I personally don’t think we’ll be fine with next year’s receiver room. I’m hopeful that Richardson turns out to be the guy, but that’s asking a lot.

Well, I have to go to a surprise birthday party at 6 p.m. Saturday, which means I can't watch the game. And that means I'll be peeking at my phone all night long, which means that this game is going to be agonizing, with ND eking out a 24-17 victory or something like that. Before you scoff at me, you should know that I've had to miss more games than I'd care to admit to over the past 20 years, and almost every time, it has come down to the wire. This year, I missed the second half of NIU and the fourth quarter of Louisville.
I wouldn’t attend.
