I've heard that Brian Kelly's buyout structured by fellow "genius" Swarbrick is $16MM.

Yes Bernie the system is rigged but not against the average man/woman in the workforce but rather against the average ND fan. For generations ND has had fanatical and loyal fans who love the game, love the campus, love the tailgating and love the university. This inelastic demand has created huge revenues for the school who in turn has become arrogant and stupid when taking care of this same loyal fan base.

The idea that they would produce almost 30 years of third tier football in exchange for this money is disgraceful. They've botched endless coaching hires and then end up paying these coaches millions more to go away.

Now the ND "establishment" has their guy in Kelly. A coach whose nickname is Coacho Cinco on the message boards for going 8 & 5 most years and whose free market value based on his pedigree and coaching performance is about $250,000+/- a year as either a head coach at a mid major program or a position coach in the NFL. Of course the establishment is more interested in keeping themselves rich and happy than they are in winning at the highest level again. Because of this they load up his contract with a big buyout and a pay raise even though no one wants to "steal" him from us and basically ensures us that they will never fire him either.

Meanwhile the Midwest has gotten more competitive with Meyer at OSU, Harbaugh at Michigan and Lovie at Illinois. Instead of going after a splash hire to get us back in the fray the establishment doubles down on a proven dud as they think the fans will never sway and will continue to support a dying ND brand even with more tickets to sell in an expanded stadium.

Congrats to the ND Establishment! Thanks for taking advantage us and putting us further behind the eight ball so ND football can remain the punchline of every joke at ESPN for years to come.

Kelly deserves to be paid with the best in the game. As a proud ND alum I finally feel like we have a top-tier coach. The first since Lou. Sorry you are unhappy. Maybe you should shift your allegiance to Lovie's Illini. Let's see how that works out for you.

All that talk and not a single accurate statement.

It's damn near impossible to conclude you are a ND fan. I get that some fans don't like Kelly, and won't give him his due unless we win a NC; but your well written rant reeks of a level of cynicism that borders on obsessive personal hatred for a man who has done a great job rebuilding the ND football program. ND fans are fortunate to have Kelly and the staff he has assembled, especially in light of the demands of the job and the condition of the program when he took over.

Such a typical and silly response. Top tier? Pop in some tape bro. You're delusional. He's not even close to being in Meyer or Saban's league.

National title? That's not happening no matter who the coach is. All I ask for is Kelly to stop the non-stop choke jobs he has against big time teams, yearly. And some of his choke jobs are against also-rans.

2015 @ Stanford
2015 @ Clemson
2014 Northwestern
2014 @ Florida State
2013 @ Pitt
2012 Alabama
2011 @ Michigan
2011 USF
2011 Florida State
2010 Tulsa

What's the attraction to this head coach? Next off season ND won't have the #1 all-time winning % because of the ridiculous losses he has racked up. Some people will always have blinders on I guess. 8-4/9-3 is the new happy norm.

The sad think is you missed many others like Navy his first year when they weren't prepared to defend the triple option inspite of hiring an "experienced" head coach. Louisville, multiple losses to Michigan when led by duds Rich Rod and Brady Hoke. The Michigan State game his first year when we lost by getting burned by a fake kick.

The near losses to far inferior teams are endless also.

OK, who would you suggest that ND hire to coach the football team?

This was the Cornhuskers dilemma, and the jury is still out if they made the right move

I dunno, Poet. Callahan and Pelini were disasters. It remains to be seen how Riley will work out, but going 6-7 in his first year was nothing outstanding.

True but Coach Pelini was a consistent 9 - 3 guy. Living here in Omaha the banter between the pro Pelini was heated. I like coach Riley, but this isn't Oregon St.

The fan base here seem to not remember how long it took coach Osborne to put NU as a power.

Maybe what we are witnessing now is coach Kelly on the cusp of doing just that

Oh I know. I was being nice. In 2010 when he lost to both msu and meatchicken I knew it was a disastrous hire for ND. He's embarrassed ND since day one.

Poet, I am hoping you will be able to make the trip from Omaha to South Bend for a game this season. As for Riley, he's got nowhere to go but up. The Huskers have really fallen off since Solich was canned.

We have three games slated this season:

The Texas game (My son bought the tickets)

The "U" My first trip to a true home game. We are looking into a package. My wife has never been to Chicago and I want to take her to Michigan Ave. Thursday evening - pep rally Friday
Navy ( My mom lives in J'ville)

Good point about Solich. That was a surprising firing NU

The way I figure it until I actually BUY a home game ticket.....others are "paying" for ND football salaries etc. Hence I get FREE ND football!!!! Nice!!!

ALL IN WITH BK!!!

Commy... Still no realistic replacement mentioned, something that's has been asked of the anti Kelly agenda for years.. Closest answer? "Realistic lateral choices".

I think it's very hard to know if Brian Kelly is about to turn the corner or not. Every year it seems like there are things that are completely random instead of well-planned. ND will struggle mightily against mediocre opponents, play inconsistently but almost win the big games, will blow out a mediocre opponent, and get blown out by a top team. Just seems random to me.

However, ND is 1-7 against top-25 teams the last two years, which doesn't seem like a good trend. I hope that I'm not getting duped as the OP suggests, supporting a team based on past glories instead of current success. It's hard to tell -- maybe we'll get some more answers this year, but probably not.

I guess if there aren't any realistic top choices to replace Kelly, we'll just have to hope that he will develop into a top-tier coach. But he's not there yet IMO -- he's just better than the previous 3 coaches, which is still a good thing.

Yikes! 1-7 against top 25 teams over the past two years. Never realized that. If true that is not a top tier coaching stat by any stretch.

Hmm, you took a statement which may be 100% false, and then built an entire rant around it? Such passion.
