A certain segment of the team is boycotting till the President is replaced.

That is their right of course. The question is, should their Financial Aid be revoked?

Has to do with the President's reaction to requests by minority student associations to increase university efforts to address racism. This story will be huge, wonder how long it goes.

Thanks I had no idea. It's an election year so can imagine for a while.

It all happened rather quickly. I think the big turning point was when the president got caught on camera suggesting the cause of systematic opression/racism was the opinions of minorities. The implication would be that it only exists in the mind of minorities.

There is a student 5-6 days in on a hunger strike too

It's a free country.

Considering how well progressive policies have work so well in the inner cities they might want to listen to Dr Carson

This action appears to be PC on steroids. Herb Stein once said, " something that can't go on won't". Political correctness will eventually eat it's own.

The head coach just ramped it up another knotch.

This could become huge for all the wrong reasons

I wonder if this wouldn't be expressed better in another venue. I applaud the young men for their conviction, but overall it seems to have hurt their team.

Fair or not, the university would get roasted if they did that.

Absolutely! Take the political BS elsewhere!

So the tail wags the dog NDE?

I don't have an opinion on whether it's right or wrong, but it's the reality of the situation, and I think it would be difficult to argue that the reality would be otherwise.

If you have a group of minority student-athletes who feel that the university's leadership is not representing them, thus causing them to boycott games, the action is taking away their financial aid is not going to be seen publicly as a good thing for the university.

The idea that any student athlete minority or not can disrupt the functions of a any University because they feel the leadership of the University is not responding to whatever grievance they had causing them to boycott games( the same University that is giving them an opportunity to better their life) w/o consequences sets a bad precedence for more than said University.

You are correct it would be difficult to argue that the reality would be otherwise unless common sense is applied though the difficulty of that with the atmosphere sent from the Oval Office only emboldens such action.

I am not trying to make a political statement though these action are politically driven. This is just how I perceive it.

University protests are probably as old as universities themselves, so I don't have an issue with student protests in general which disrupt the functions of a university. It happens. I don't think it's the best avenue for the student-athletes involved to voice their concerns, if only because it affects their teammates. Provided they have their teammates' backing, then I don't have a big issue with it.

Even if the university would have a right to pull the student-athletes' financial aid, they'd be idiots to do so - again, they'd get killed on the perception front.

I think it's misguided to blame things on the Obama administration. Sports-related protests are nothing new. It has little to do with the administration currently in charge.

As always I enjoy your responses.

I do agree University protests are probably as old as universities themselves, but the Oval Office has injected itself time and again in these issue, and emboldens those who demonstrates these action

BTW Gary Pinkel is in solidarity with the protesters. Makes me wonder if an undefeated Mizzou team they would be as eager. 4-5 the season is lost.

The oval office doesn't need to organize. Its past actions on several occasion in different venues have gotten the ball rolling.

Ok. Which major protests in the last 7 years do you believe the white house was active in getting the ball rolling?

I agree with this. I think this has less to do with the president and more to do with a larger societal change.

For what it's worth, I'm not sure the president can "win" on any issues involving race.

Societal change?

Now there's a can of warms

The late 60s and early 70s were filled with examples of similar activities by undergrads demanding attention and action. And many of those actions were more disruptive, in some cases forcing a university president to find temporary office space. The Missouri activities seem tame by comparison, but likely ultimately futile.

And to think this coming because of the Oval Office strikes me as wrong. Young people will typically be more idealistic and also less caring of authority voices. Certainly the 60s/70s protests took no guidance from then Oval Office holders. I doubt the Missouri students care much either.

I was surprised at the quote I saw from the football coach. If I saw it correctly, it read as if he supported the students' actions; wonder if that meant only their freedom to speak or he also wants the president of university removed. Does he get along with university administration?

I don't see the connection between what Obama may have said in that case and what is happening here.

If you believe it was only one thing then you are not paying attention to the events in this country and the way the White House has taken one side and not another.

These are the choices we make in life, and which way we choose to see.

No wrongs or rights just choices

Btw I'm not saying the White House is involved in this. Just past actions have embolden events.

I think its a stretch to say Trayvon Martin and the White House's reaction to that situation has much to do with whats going on in Missouri. I think the bigger impact being seen is that with social media exploding you are seeing people share in their stories more and more and finding others that have similar life experiences that they want to change. Its also easier now to organize and get the message out with the multitude of ways to contact others.

It appears from what I read that the President of the university approached this situation from the beginning as though he figured this would just go away.

There you go.

What a country.

I'll say this as someone who lurks on Notre Dame's rivals but is a tried and true Jayhawk from the slant. Thus you know that I may be a bit biased. A feces drawn swastika in a new dorm is a little much even for that school. That action probably warranted a reaction, especially in light of their culture of "Quantrial was right," and "the South will rise again." You could say this was a PC overreaction, but if you live in the geographic region you know that Missourah has repeatedly turned a blind eye towards its top fan group's (the antlers) overt racism towards opposing schools athletes and fanbases. Similar responses from that fanbase of that school is the norm. It's a melting pot of bad that has been festering for a while. You don't have to like national politics or agree with the current White House administration to know that this has been brewing at ol Missourah for a while.

I wonder why the team did not take such a stand when they were knowingly playing with a rapist Derrick Washington....I know it is a different group of players....but you would think that would be something to make a stand against.
