UNC skates

So the classes were bogus.... but there is no violation because non-athletes and athletes alike were enrolled in the classes??

Whether the classes were meant for athletes-only seems irrelevant. UNC was still offering a bogus major for classes that didn't exist. How is this ok??

The NCAA is truly made up of greasy palm handshakes and backroom deals.
It's a joke as a governing body.

When comparing this to the way they handled the ND Five, we were totally screwed (not that I ever thought that we weren't screwed). Based upon this, I think they should make Pitino the new NCAA commissioner.

If they vacate ND's wins after that, I think we should start a movement to leave the NCAA. I bet we could find 20 other schools of like mind and within five years create an organization that could challenge the NCAA's stranglehold over collegiate athletics.

Wait...you saying he isn't?

;)

Seriously though...
there are things behind the smoke in all these incidents. I mean trying to know the intricate details from the internet itself is not going to be the whole story.

Having said that ever since the SMU debacle from the 80's the NC two A has always been overly cautious when investigating and handing down punishments. They didn'tknow back then the impact that death penalty really would have and in hindsight would never have laid down that much wrath to any program because it essentially was a death penalty without the sarcasm.

If the failed NCAA doesn't rule in favor of ND then ND should take the NCAA to court. Penn State and Joe Pervert got over 100 games restored, FSU, and now NC. ND should never work with the NCAA again; or the P-5, ND, and whoever wants to come with us to separate from the corrupt NCAA.

Maybe Notre Dame could get the 2012 wins back if they did that

Thanks for the link to the article. I'm glad I read it but the author, and his perspective, is full of shit. These selected statements sum up his perspective:

"As a culture, we have decided that major sports programs are an essential part of these universities—perhaps—the essential part... so if you’re mad at the NCAA today, you are essentially telling North Carolina: “Hey, your university’s shame about widespread academic fraud is meaningless unless your basketball program gets punished.” How messed up is that?

There are no heroes here. Nobody is screaming that justice was served. There is still a lot of shame in this case. But that shame belongs to North Carolina, not the infractions committee."

According to the author, NC gets all the shame. I can't imagine how awful that burden of having "all the shame" must be <insert heavy sarcasm>. Will the university sleep at night?

The author said it himself without noticing his own contradiction. In a culture where sports programs are an essential part of universities, YES, the NCAA should punish the sports programs even when the entire university is to blame precisely because that is the most impactful form of punishment they can dish out and, NO, doing so is NOT messed up. Had the NCAA dished out severe yet reasonable penalties against UNC's sports programs how hard would UNC have pushed back? I'm sure they would have pushed back some but they know what they did was wrong and they know the entire sports world sees it the same way, so they likely would have looked to get some of the penalties lightened but I really don't think they would have looked to get off scot-free. The NCAA just gave them the greatest gift they ever could have hoped for and I don't think anyone at UNC is going to lose any sleep over it.

One would think after the FBI made the NCAA look ridiculous that they would not want to screw anything else up. Well guess I wrong there.

DIP,
Problem is ND self reported and admitted to the "crime". UNC fought their charges and were found not guilty in a kangaroo court........... I expect UNC to have a very good football team soon as you don't need to be "smrt (simpson referenc)" to go to UNC

I wonder if this will lead to Universities to no longer be pre emptive and use this ruling as a benchmark.?
Since the NCAA isn't a law enforcement board I wonder if a precedence can be set?
