Unless he's grooming his son to take over in a few years. It's a good hire if you want to make a big splash, but I don't think it's a good hire if you want to build a CFB program for the long run. He's 72 and has never coached CFB before.

Ummm he succeeded long before 70 BudYea there is zero precedent for a 70 year old hard ass coach succeeding in college. Oh Nick Saban. It would be a slam dunk for a school like North Carolina to hire the GOAT. The reward far outweighs the risk for that middling program
Why do people assume BB cannot recruit? If Deion can attract recruits why not the GOAT?
LmfaoSurprise candidate interviews for UNC football head coach job
Guess who the latest surprise name in the UNC head coaching vacancy is?tarheelswire.usatoday.com
That would be interesting. I’d probably jump on that if I were UNC.
It’s amazing the drive and love for the game that some of these older guys have.
73 years old. No personality. Old school hard assIf Deion can attract recruits why not the GOAT?
Too bad they arentBill Walsh coming back to Stanford after the 49ers is the road map. Walsh had a top 10 team that first year (1992). In fact, he beat a loaded ND team that season.
But the falloff was steep after year 1, and Walsh was out after three seasons. Guessing we see something similar at UNC. Thankfully the Tar Heels aren't on the schedule next fall.
There are several programs that have been gateways to the NFL.I think watching this unfold will be fascinating. They are going to take the NFL approach. Personnel folks up and down. He's already got his GM. Rumor has it assistant coaches won't be recruiting personnel folks will be. Certainly a non traditional approach. The board of trustees there are sold. Can't wait.
And so did Bill, Bub. This was in response to a 70 year old hard ass coach being able to recruit. Keep upUmmm he succeeded long before 70 Bud
I read that too, there is no cost to printing that hypothetical after the fact.Apparently Tommy Rees was going to get the job if BB passed. Interesting. I also see where a NC offensive lineman who had entered the portal has withdrawn his name after the hire.
No shit Sherlock. And so did Bill, Bub. This was in response to a 70 year old hard ass coach being able to recruit. Keep up
You don't know any of this. You are simply assuming this.73 years old. No personality. Old school hard ass
That part is all factsYou don't know any of this. You are simply assuming this.
Every talking head on sports radio vomiting on themselves about this hire are also assumingYou don't know any of this. You are simply assuming this.
According to Dan Wetzel his main focus will be on the transfer portal. This makes no sense on so many levels. No college coaching background never recruited will he be alive to see his first full class graduate? I hope to he hires great assistants but I seeing this being a 5 win team. The portal will help just don't see him connecting with kids.
Of course it will be.According to Dan Wetzel his main focus will be on the transfer portal.
If he has such a sh1t personality, how is it he has a 20 something year old woman with him. And please don't tell me it's because he's rich, because she could get someone that's rich, much younger if she was a gold digger. I'm not ruling out that she isn't, I'm just saying if he was a douche, he wouldn't have landed someone so young. That part is all facts
Can he surprise and be a great recruiter, yes. That part is my assumption that he won't be a great recruiter
Him being 73 with a shit personality and a hard ass coach is all facts backed with 40 years of evidence
My assumption is that won't work recruiting 17 year olds. We'll see. I wouldn't mind UNC being a big football team for the ACC. I just don't see it
He’s a real stud!If he has such a sh1t personality, how is it he has a 20 something year old woman with him. There's more than one way to be a good recruiter. I think its possible that he has some Saban-like appeal where he can attract top talent based on his reputation/cache alone. That part is all facts

You get a pass for being a hard-ass disciplinarian militant style coach when you have multiple super bowl and/or national title rings.
And recruits have been following rings since Charlie WeisWomen have been marrying for money since the Jane Austin days.

I don’t know how successful he will be nor how invested he is but will he improve on a historically .500 team with the 82 ranked recruiting class? No doubt. This makes no sense on so many levels. No college coaching background never recruited will he be alive to see his first full class graduate? I hope to he hires great assistants but I seeing this being a 5 win team. So academics out the window, and don't tell me HC don't care about academics because many do.Of course it will be.
Teams can completely do a make over through the transfer portal.
There is definitely doubt. Their risk is to becoming a laughing stockI don’t know how successful he will be nor how invested he is but will he improve on a historically .500 team with the 82 ranked recruiting class? No doubt.
The choice from UNC was a no brainer..again, what is their risk? Holding on to perennial 7-5 seasons and risking their 82nd ranked class falling apart?
This isn’t Ohio State or Georgia. There is zero risk if you are a North Carolina. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Tommy Rees interviewed twice and likely would have been the choice until Belichik agreed to take the job. Hiring Bill Belichik was a no brainer. There is definitely doubt. Their risk is to becoming a laughing stock
You correct in that regard. My reference was that they would very well be set back longer. Rees would of been an even bigger risk. This isn’t Ohio State or Georgia. Nick Saban disagrees with you. According to Schefter, Saban’s endorsement of Tommy Rees is why North Carolina seriously considered the 32-year-old Rees. You correct in that regard. My reference was that they would very well be set back longer. Rees would of been an even bigger risk.
