It’s not a horrible idea, I can’t imagine the women’s volleyball team or the fencing teams traveling coast to coast on non-charters.
Are schools going to leave non-football sports on the road for a week or two weeks at a time and have their students attend class online/virtual?

There are several teams in the Group of Five who would be PISSED at being left out of the top division. They would probably sue.
Also, I believe most (not all, but most) SEC and Big Ten teams LIKE being in their conferences. And you won't be able to make fundamental changes without those schools' support.
