This is a long Notre Dame quote...but it is from Tommy Hawkins, the second black basketball starter at ND.
"I walked into a downtown South Bend pizza parlor with a date one night. And a guy says to me 'Do you have a reservation?' And I said 'Reservations in a pizza parlor? You've got to be kidding.' Well, all of the Notre Dame students there knew what was going down, so they simply discontinued eating and got up and walked out. When the University heard about the situation, the pizza parlor was put off limits to Notre Dame personnel and students until I got a public apology.
"Father Hesburgh, who rates No.1 on my list of all-time great men, in a press conference in 1956 when he was asked what he was going to do, said to the nation, 'Anywhere that Tommy Hawkins isn't welcome, Notre Dame isn't welcome.' In the mid 1950s, that statement was huge. That's the kind of backing I got from everybody at Notre Dame."
--Tommy Hawkins, as told to Michael Coffey.
Tommy died yesterday at the age of 80. Rest in Peace.

Gotta love Father Ted, no mincing of words, no BS. Kevin Hawkins, Tom's son, was in school when I was there. A very nice well liked kid, as I imagine his father was.
