Brian Kelly will not bring this university a championship. Let's get that out of the way first. My guess in three years nothing will change under Kelly. We ND fans will continue to watch teams around us get new coaches while NC sits by and let's more programs pass us by. Look at what has happened around us in recent years. Bama was garbage team, until Saban arrived. Meyer is dominating at OSU. Clemson has found their man. Even Dantoni at State is outperforming Kelly. Michigan? Could be something special happening there. All these teams have a brighter future than ND. There is absolutely no reason to sit around and watch teams like this only get better while we settle for this. You can even add the Cardinal to list. ND has to make a move and dump this guy. School do it all the time. Even if a coach wins 7-8 wins consistently, if the school believes they can do better, they look else where.

ND can do much better. They need to snatch up Herman at Houston or promote Sanford. Kelly is not a big game coach. Kelly is not a great leader. Kelly will not bring this university or any other university a championship. Jack, you have to make the bold move and get this guy out. Watch what a Mike Herman coached team does to an unbelievable Louisville team 11/17. After this game Jack better be the first guy to call Herman.

Nowheresville....

The man is in full denial... Here are remarks from yesterday's PC:

Q. I had the same question. How have you handled defensive issues in the past?
COACH KELLY: Scored more points.

Q. I think the running game took a step back against MichiganState. What did you see, and what do you think you need to work on?
COACH KELLY: I tend to disagree with it after evaluating our offense......

Also, some poster wrote that he's taking over some part of the D.... That's false...

Q. You're in this situation. I know you're supporting Brian VanGorder 100 percent. But you mentioned getting fundamentals right, getting teaching right. As the head coach, do you feel compelled to kind of shift your emphasis, your time, over to the other side of the ball while it's in this state?
COACH KELLY: Well, I have to be able to know that everything in the program is being taught, being effectively communicated on a day-to-day basis. So physically, does that mean on the practice field I have to stand on the defensive practice field to get that done? No, it doesn't mean that. What it means is that I have to be in defensive meetings. It means that I have to be aware of what the game plan is. It means that I have to know how we're teaching things and communicating them, which I do. (In other words "status quo")

So I don't need a headset. I don't need to be on the defensive side of the ball coaching tackling. I'm very confident that I've got good coaches to do that, but I'm the head coach, and I'd better be certain that I know exactly what's going on in all facets of my program -- offense, defense, special teams, recruiting, all of those things. But from an optic standpoint, I don't need to be standing on the defensive end of the field to make sure that gets done.

Hate to play the Devils (cgvr) advocate but won't we just get another mediocre coach like usual.
I say lets just keep Kelly until we know we can get a home run hire and then be bold and strike like lightening ! Hopefully Swarbrick is looking into some potential coaches who would want to come to ND.

Home run hire is sitting in Houston.

Kelly will not make 3 more years. This year, maybe next. That's it. If this season really goes south, who knows? He might just step down, though I doubt his ego would allow him to do that.

I do agree the weight of the job is clearly beginning to wear on him. I used to think he would do 10 years and retire, but you might be right that he only has a year or two left.

If we are adamant that the next savior coach is Herman, I'd expect you'd at least get his name correct. It's Tom Herman, not Mike.

I don't think their us a savior. Unless the administration decides to change admission standards, changing coaches won't matter. Today's game us so different. The elite kids want to play in the NFL. They don't care about a college degree. The lure of money is to great. That's why schools in the SEC and other conferences get a lot of talent. Schools like ND get good to very good talent and maybe a difference make once in a while. They don't get enough to sustain at an elite level. I remember when they would rank number 1 , 2 or 3 in recruiting year after year. You could see the type of players they would get. I don't see that anymore. Jaylon Smith was truly elite. You could see it. There isn't one player on defense that is remotely close to his level. Teams like Alabama and Ohio State have many players like Smith. That is why they are in the top tier year after year. Michigan will be there soon. ND has top 15 talent but that's it. So until they get elite talent every year, they will be a good program but not a great program. Somewhere the people who run ND decided that football isn't that important. Remember great players make great plays. Kelly has done a good job making ND respectable. I just think he getting to the end. The next coach will have a stable program which is good.

This is the oldest ND excuse around. Yes, ND has high academic standards. However, there is NFL talent all over this team. Let's start with QB. DK is a first round QB. The left side of the oline is also first round material. Morgan, Coney, James O, will play in the NFL. Cage, Isaac Rochell, Andrew Trumbetti
Jerry Tillery, Jones, Daelin Hayes all nfl talent. Bama and Michigan are not loaded with Jaylon Smith talent. OSU is not loaded with Jaylon Smith talent. Keep making excuses for Kelly. I was one of his biggest fans, now, I no longer believe he can win us a championship. Also, look at Equanimeous St. Brown. Michigan, Bama, and OSU would love to have him right now.

Makes no difference what you all say - we are in a death spiral. It may end after next season by mutual agreement. Otherwise, expect more frustration and pain that only Coach 8 & 4 can deliver. Swarbrick, start looking.

" Stools like ND" ???

I'm not sure I agree with your premise. Hopefully BK will take ND to the promise land in the next 3 years. In the first 6 years, we've been close twice. The 12-0 record and last year when we ended the regular season a couple of points away from an undefeated season. This season has certainly started off bad, but we are having one of our best recruiting years and at the right positions (Jeter). If the defense doesn't improve against good competition and Kelly stands pat with the coaching staff at the end of the year, I'd begin to waiver. But at this point, I believe it is premature to throw the towel in on the Kelly era.

Three years from now Kelly will be getting his team ready to win its second NC in a row - the only question will be who replaces BVG who was hired away to replace the retired coach of the New England Patriots.

Using the words ND football, Brian Kelly and 3 years from not together has triggered me. I'll see ya Saturday after a nail biter with Duke. The team that falls somewhere between 70-90 in recruiting.

Why would Tom Herman come to ND is a better question. Brian Kelly had a similar run at Cincinnati that Tom H is having at Houston. Houston actually had a good football tradition with Bill Yeoman. Then Jack Pardee, John Jenkins, Art Briles and Kevin Sumlin. Cincinnati did nothing before Kelly or after.

Tom H knows Meyer is subject to burn out and OSU would love to get him back or OU and Bob Stoops may be reaching a break up point. Or Charlie Strong is still on the ropes at UT. How about LSU looking to replace Miles? LSU,OSU,OU and UT are way more attractive to coach trying to make the playoffs.

Three years from now after two NC seasons President Hillary will be asking BK to run for VP and BVG will be made secretary of defense. Kelly will finally bring peace to the Middle East.

if the kitchen gets too hot....Kelly will either bolt the the NFL....in one capacity or another....or, he will sulk and let it be known he's talked to the NFL in order to get his contract firmed up.

unless Kelly turns the current 'meh' recruiting class into a Top 5 recruiting class; including a # 1-4 OT and a combo of elite DE / LB tandem and 1 elite DB he will not answer the 'bell' for the 2018 Kickoff!
Quit or fired, that's the prediction here! He simply will have to go.

Still producing exciting 9-3 teams, and winning his share of Music City Bowl titles.

No coach will dude. It's impossible. Even Stanford won't win a natty. What can be done is ND brings in a coach that can win some big games and elevate the program. Kelly can't win a big game.

That said ego is why ND is where they are- losing every big game.

its de ja vus all over again. the only question left to answer is "at what point do the powers that be believe that this train wreck can't be fixed"?

Finishing up another 8-4 or 7-5 season and preparing for a music city bowl date with...Tulsa. Full circle.
