The best news thus far? NYLES!!!

Yea, I heard that and that's great news. Hopefully they have simplified the defense to help ensure our best athletes play.

Exactly you nailed it. Why in the hell wasn't he out there last year? Oh thats right, bk had to play his "Dick Butkus" type middle linebacker joe shmitt. the only one who could line people up in the right position. What a bunch of BS

We WILL see IMPROVEMENT!!!!!!

“Joe definitely wasn’t the best athlete in coverage,” Elston said. “It was more of a product of his intelligence and he was going to be in the right spot.

“Athletically he struggled at times in space to make plays and everybody saw it, but the tradeoff was he was going to be in the right spot and get other guys around him in the right spot.

“Nyles is having a really good spring. I’m very excited about his growth from the offseason from where he was a year ago. His communication is much improved. He’s playing very physical. His leadership is much improved.

”He’s going to be a really good cover linebacker. I don’t see Nyles leaving the field on third down either, unless a guy like James [Onwualu] develops into that role, or a guy like Greer [Martini].

“Nyles is a good penetrating rusher too, where Joe wasn’t. When you bring him, you’re going to feel something, and so we’ve got that going on third down too.”

sounds like Elston was wondering why Nyles was on the bench also!

Nyles vs a 'traffic cone'

When the staff makes statements like Elston's and then they go to the podium to reiterate "it ain't the scheme"; then they are talking out both sides of their mouth! And, to extent they are blaming the players, and absolving themselves of accountability.

6 years of various players all exhibiting some degree of difficulty. And it's the players?

pers.....in my limited experience coaching I always found that "Good players made me a better Coach!" I know it needs to be a little more complex at this level BUT I do wonder why our coverage is so lacking that guys run free. Wheel routes are run in pee wees....sheesh. I am very intrigued by Studstill's apparent quick grasp of this....hope it is so!

GET BETTER!!!

Well, it is good to see in the spring in controlled situations.

The proof will be in the fall when it is for real!

Like it has been earlier -- spring is about being optimistic!

remember, to paraphrase Bill Parcells, 'Kelly and Co. are the ones shopping for the groceries'

To be fair Perse is spot on when Elston get up there saying that Schmidt was overwhelmed athletically but he was great at getting everyone in position, but hey, the scheme is not too hard. Double speak for sure.

Also, it's obvious that there we a LOT of players that didn't know their assignments. We all complained about the S but their mistakes are so obvious because they are the last line of defense. LB always out of position. I can't count how many times during a game 2 LB would take the same gap while a RB ran completely untouched through another.

The fact is that defense will never work in CFB, it's too complicated and for any defense to work 100% of the players need to understand it.

Spring is for positive public assessments and optimism for the coming year. I love reading about Morgan's improved understanding and communication, but time will tell if any of this love is warranted. Sure better than reading any doom and gloom and concern, etc... We absolutely need our linebackers to be positions of strength this year.

Yes but......is ND "passing" on better players? Or are they getting the best qualified players that are RKG's? I think there are very few elite players with the grades for ND that are not pursued by ND.

after so many springs of false fan fodder, it is now simply, "show me"

"...VanGorder’s aggressive defensive scheme is supposed to force turnovers and generate pressure on the quarterback. It heavily relies on defensive backs to hold their own in man-to-man coverage. The results in those areas haven’t been as positive: Notre Dame recovered seven fumbles (No. 88) in 2014 and five (No. 113) last season. Its interception total dropped from 15 to nine (No. 91) last year, and it ranked 74th and 75th in team sacks...."

If nothing else^, that's a problem! < and arguing there is no problem=bigger problem!

and, yes, 348 I agree that the staff is working hard to try to get the best possible athletes. But, given the reality, they have to work with what they have. You can't put the square peg (players) in the round hole (BVG's defense).

(Schmidt must have been a round square)

In 2014 Notre Dame was # 44 in defensive takeaways which was 33 spots ahead of # 77 Alabama. So your statistics about takeaways don't mean crap. Alabama had a helluva defense in 2014 and ours was poor.

Notre Dames total defense improved in 2015 over 2014 but its defensive takeaways dropped from #44 to #113.

Injuries killed the Irish defense last year. The defensive lapses during games we were running away with was also a BIG problem. Understanding of scheme should improve after three years of BVG.
Just like with Bob Diaco.

joe schmidt was the best player on defense in 2014 but because of injuries was the worst in 2015 . This drop off was a main reason for the terrible defense we had 2015
