Coach Elko has a brilliant defensive mind and is a disciple of Sun Tzu--- He knows how to use the players he has and how to take advantage of other teams weaknesses. We will see a big increase in turnovers --mostly by a hurried confused quarterback on the opposing offense.
But the point in football ,just as in war, is VICTORY. It doesn't matter about how many yards you give up or how many points you give up--it is not about the body count or how many bunkers you bust. Just victory matters.. The Irish are going to give up a helluva lot of yards and points this year but will still attain enough victories to make the college football playoff.
In college football nowadays with the wide open spread offenses and the refs who throw flags and eject players for making big hits--receivers are not afraid anymore to go over the middle or anywhere to make a catch. All teams give up alot of yards and points. Don't be dissing our cornerbacks and safetys everytime they give up a big play ! Wait to cheer for them when they create a turnover ! It is going to happen alot !!
The days of 21 to 17 are over !! Expect a few 52 to 35 wins ! And give the defense alot of credit for those 52 to 35 wins ! For it is alot harder to play defense than offense in todays game !!

Go Irish !!

Not to be a "negative Nancy"...but ND better give up less than 20 a game to have a chance at a decent season. 26.4 points a game only would put them in the top 50 in scoring defense based on LY stats. Not going to win too many ball games if you have to constantly count on the offense. Giving up 35 and hoping to score 50...not against good teams.

Stats are interesting. I think a top 30 scoring defense would get ND into the playoff conversation. And that's giving up slightly more than an average of 24 pts per game. We don't need a lot of 52-6 wins like Alabama and Ohio St. to pad our stats. I'll be happy to average 38 on offense and 24 on defense and a 10-2 regular season with major bowl victory, but prefer Bodi's 12-0 scenario.

"the refs who throw flags and eject players for making big hits"

Just remember -- the officials do make the rules, just enforce them. It is the conference heads that want those big hits taken out of the game.
